It’s especially frustrating because Taylor’s at a stage in her career where she no longer needs hits, so she should be making the most interesting music of her career. But ever since Folklore and Evermore she’s become stagnant to the point of parody. Her songwriting on TTPD and even Midnights wasn’t as strong as previous records. Meanwhile her colleagues are all making objectively better music than she is and yet I’m supposed to accept that their songs and albums aren’t as worthy of that number one spot as Taylor? I think people like him because he's passionate about music and he makes music reviews entertaining, if that makes sense. Usually music reviews tend to be dry and overly technical or overly opinionated. He's pretty balanced in his approach to reviewing albums. He'll give even the most doggy doo doo artists and songs a fair chance before giving his opinion. I don't think that Melon personally considers himself to be a taste maker or authority. He's a pretty humble dude.

complete agree, but no one deserves a number 1 - they earn it buy selling more. Taylor's selling power is reflective of her legacy as an artist. Other artists just don't have the legacy. SZA managed to get a number 1 over Midnights because people were willing to buy the album. Brat and hmhas were both brilliant albums, but neither have Taylor's selling power. The fact that a last minute drop of 1 single voice note can make Taylor sell more says more about demand for artistry.

In the age of digital streaming, you can’t convince me that the charts still matter, when 12 of the top 20 Hot 100 tracks are songs on Taylor’s album that weren’t even released as singles. How the charts are conceived today, plus these silly games, of re-releasing albums makes it incredibly difficult for a more diverse and interesting chart. One only need to look at the charts from the 70s through the 90s to see how vastly different they’ve become.

Is It Over Now was predetermined to be number 1 by the fan base through mass listening parties advertised through social media.
