What I find so interesting is that these Swifties act like Matty Healy just appeared in her life like yesterday. They've been friends since at least 2014. He predates Joe Alwyn. Of course I don't know how close they are or were, or what boundaries Taylor had with him as a guy friend while she dated Calvin, Tom, and Joe. But it seems logical to me that she has history with him and they've both seen each other evolve over the last decade. Apart from the whole Matty Healy/ Joe Alwyn thing, another thing that left me shocked was how both swifties and casual fans were like "oh I hoped she would just have her fierce single lady era" or " I wished she would have been single a little longer" or "This is not healty for her, she needs to heal" etc. Like, excuse me, who are you? Her therapist? Her parent? Her close friend? You have wishes about HER love life... Is she a movie character? I know that we all feel like that in a way we know her, that's part of the parasocial relationship she also helps foster and which I think, to a degree, is well and good and fun. But to act like you actually think you know her personally and know what's best for her is crazy. I agree and disagree. Women do get more shit than the actual problematic person. I do think dating a problematic person is tacit acceptance of his problematic viewpoints and actions. This tacit acceptance happens all the time, beyond just Taylor’s relationship with Matty. In an ideal world people wouldn’t date others who consistently, frequently say and do harmful things. I just don't agree with this. Taylor has built a good portion of her fanbase off of supporting women and POC. She personally decided to stir the parasocial relationship that would form in doing so, and she made her PERSONAL moral beliefs clear to fans, which garnered her more support. So to date someone who is openly racist and misogynistic, it's pretty telling of the behaviour she is willing to rationalize having around her, and therefore also what she deems acceptable behaviour. Obviously swifties don't know her very personally, but it makes complete and valid sense to question the authenticity of the support of these groups. Whether she was actually in support of them or if it was just her capitalizing off of these people and the parasocial relationship she formed. All of this could be solved with a single statement of clarification from her but I doubt we are going to get that.

I'm pretty stoked actually, because i love 1975. i bet matty's appeal to her is his passion and spontaneity, much like a breath of fresh air. joe is stability and reliability, much like a rock, but possibly too stifling for her in his environment as he likes privacy and may not like the world of the stars. as a massive 1975 fan and the son of a black woman, I was really concerned about the ghetto gaggers thing when it was brought to my attention, but within context it seems obvious that it was a joke and he wasn't actually watching ghetto gaggers. Healy isn't a racist, or a misogynist, or an antisemite, or a bigot of any kind. he has a long, long track record of being one of the most politically progressive pop artists out there (much more so than Taylor Swift). as for the Nazi salute - I saw it live. at the show Taylor performed at. it was used while he was singing a lyric about Kanye. Kanye is a Nazi. Matty Healy is not. context matters.

Firstly, think you have every right to your feelings. That said, you are not doing a great job of being critical about the situation. I agree with you that I would be uncomfortable with Taylor being with someone who held the views you describe because of what it says about what she is ok with, but I don't think he holds the views you think he does. I know nothing about him, didn't know who he was three weeks ago, but I do know critical analysis, and it seems to me that all of the things you mention as "proof" of his character and beliefs are either taken out of context or widely blown out of proportion. You need to check out some first hand sources of what he said, including where and how he said it, to draw any conclusions to be critical about.

MANY things can be true at once: 1.) Matty Healy is, for many documented reasons, objectively repellent. 2.) Taylor Swift is an adult consenting woman whose life does not belong to anyone, and it's her preogative to share however much or little she wants at any time. 3.) It is possible to hold a moral high ground over SOME people; like, I don't have to be Mother Theresa to be able to rightfully judge someone, and a dude doesn't have to be Kanye for people to justifiably call him out on some messed up stuff. 4.) If she cared about his reputation, it doesn't take a ten-year-deep Twitter search to find those messed up things. 5.) Some of those "messed up things" ARE overblown and taken out of context. Particularly the "n*zi salute" and "list of jews." As a born-and-raised Jew myself, I've been rolling my eyes for weeks now at the pearl-clutching over those, and ESPECIALLY condescended to by non-Jews. 6.) The "mother" memes will forever creep me out, sorry not sorry.

I think you make a great point that people should be here for Taylor and not the men she dates. You said in a recent video that her muse is falling in and out of love and I think you are so right! She is going to be in many, many relationships and we should applaud that in her case because that’s where we get the music. People don't understand how the mind of an artist works. They need a muse, they need something to inspire them, then they fictionalize the situation a bit, and make something that will move people emotionally and also feel like they see themselves in the story. If Taylor Swift asks you to be her muse, are you going to say no? I don't think anyone would say no to that, even if you know it will break your heart. Edit: how do I know this? From age 17 to 42 I dated artists, writers, musicians, painters, actors, sometimes I was the muse, sometimes I had to watch someone else be the muse. Not an affair, an artist-muse relationship. I learned how an artist thinks, and it's not the way the rest of us think. And especially not an artist on TS's level.

I think it's really reasonable not to like Matty Healy for watching torture porn of black women. I think it's also reasonable to question why Taylor would want to date a guy who has done such creepy stuff. She's a grown woman and can do what she wants, and I definitely think fans aren't entitled to her life, but she's also made a career out of her love life and it's not weird for fans to be speculating about it. as a casual swiftie and a fan of The 1975, I understand the criticism Matty is getting and people's confusion about her dating him, but I just don't know why people are taking it so far. The way people are slandering Matty 24/7 and Taylor for dating is so weird. I never thought people were so parasocial over her but this has made me realize just how parasocial some of the fans are. I feel like it's just sorta become an echo chamber and I feel like they're all feeding into each other's feelings and making their feelings so much more intense than they actually would be if they weren't in this echo chamber. Your point about that Reddit thread being everyone virtue signaling to each other is a really good point. When I first found out about her being with Matty, I was like you, just here for the mess and the break-up songs. Then when I saw so many POC Swifties upset, I felt like I have to stop streaming or do something to be a good ally. I've watched the video a few times and yeah I can see where it starts to get harsh towards people who are just saying that they are uncomfortable with all that. I'm very sorry for what you and other Swifties like you are going through right now, sending lots of love your guys' way. My take is that it's obviously okay to express your feeling of not wanting to be discriminated against of course and people should be taking that more seriously and offering their empathy. I think where some people take it too far (and admittedly this is probably white Swifties going full savior complex mode) is when people say like you're a terrible person if you like her or stream her music now and get all high and mighty about it. I don't think that's right either. Let me make it clear that is absolutely not what I think you are doing. Part of me has trouble believing that Taylor's inclusive nature that she has shown for a lot of her career would just be gone like that, of course it's a possibility and I will be open to that fact if more stuff comes out about her actions and stuff, but for now I have the mindset of separating the two's actions until further notice. The "deserves to be hit by a car" thing is thrown so easily without even knowing what it truly means. My grandfather died in an accident. He was hit by a bus. It was devastating to everyone in my family. It's been almost 25 years and the wound is still there.
