This song is also the reason why Swifties had started the friendship bracelet trend amongst ourselves. Sure, it’s “kandi” to ravers and 70s-90s kids had it first, but Taylor’s song and the Eras tour repopularized the trend.

As always I love that she starts with you’re on your own kid as a sad phrase and then she manages to make it triumphant end as a way to say all that’s she’s achieved can’t be taken away

Oh, the fan-favorite YOYOK lol. Taylor had performed this song multiple times on the Eras tour, but most notably during one show where the legendary Stevie Nicks was present, because Stevie herself said the song Youre On Your Own, Kid, reminded her of the late Christine McVie.

Something about her little head nod when she says “yeah you can face this, you’re on your own kid…. I agree the end of the song switches to being quite hopeful compared to the beginning about being in love but it’s not reciprocated. And realizing your dreams aren’t rare (I think of her shlepping her cd’s all over Nashville) to dealing with the trappings of fame which might include starving your body, etc. It sounds like she’s lived through those scenarios for sure! This song is from her Midnights album which is so interesting to me. Here’s the prologue to Midnights! “It’s a momentary glimmer of distraction. The tiniest notion of reminiscent thought that wanders off into wondering, the spark that lights a tinderbox of fixation. And now it’s irreversible. The flame has caught. You’re wide awake. Maybe it’s that one urgent question you meant to ask someone years ago but didn’t. Someone that slipped through the cracks in your history, and they’re too far gone now anyway. All the ghost ships that have sailed and sailed away, but at this hour, they’re anchored in your harbor. They sit with flags waving, bright and beautiful. And it’s almost like it’s real. Sometimes sleep is as evasive as happiness. Isn’t it mystifying how quickly we vascillate between self love and loathing at this hour? One moment, your life looks like a night sky of gleaming stars. The next, the fog has descended. Suddenly you’re in the town you left behind all those years ago. The trees of your youth with the phantom memory echoes of your belly laughter, and the rope indentations of your old tire swing still on the branch. All the phone numbers you still know by heart but never call anymore. The boy’s devastated face as he peeled out of your driveway. The family man he is now. What must they all think of you. Why can’t you sleep? Maybe you lie awake in the aftershock of falling headlong into a connection that feels like some surreal cataclysmic event. Like spontaneous combustion, or seeing snow falling on a tropical beach. A lavender haze crush that feels like the crash of a wave. Or was tonight the night you realized how solitary, how alone you really are, no matter how high you climb. The elevation just makes it colder. Some midnights, you’re out and you’re buzzing with electric current - an adventurer in pursuit of a rapturous thrill. Music blaring from speakers and the reckless intimacy of dancing with strangers. Something in this shadowy room to make you feel shiny again. On these nights, you know that there are facets of you that only glow in the dark. Why are you still up at this hour? Because you’re cosplaying vengeance fantasies, where the bad bad man is hauled away in handcuffs and you get to watch it happen. You laugh into the mirror with a red wine snarl. You look positively deranged. Maybe you were trying to mastermind matters of the heart again. You’ve gotten lost in the labyrinth of your head, where the fear wraps its claws around the fragile throat of true love. Will you be able to save it in time? Save it from who? Well, it’s obvious. From you. We lie awake in love and in fear and in turmoil and in tears. We stare at the walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t - right this minute - about to make some fateful life-altering mistake. This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching. Hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve…we’ll meet ourselves. See you there. Midnight sharp.

Love this part of her shows, the Acoustic Set...she does some on guitar and piano. This song, is so special, it is what started this amazing friendship bracelet exchange trend at her Eras shows. Stevie Nicks has said that this song is one of her favorites as it helped her get through the loss of her bandmate/friend Christine McVie. At Taylor's Dublin Show, Stevie Knicks attended and Taylor Performed this for Stevie (and also performed "Clara Bow" , from her latest album, which names Stevie Nicks, as they are good friends and have a special bond). I will see if I can find a clear performance. So glad you appreciate this song.

I think we all have our own "on our own kid" moments. Mine was when I was 21, married less than 2 years. My husband was in the Navy and getting ready to go out to sea for the first time and the last week before he left, my dad in the Marine Corps was there for his job. Well, I put one on the plane in the morning and the other on a plane that afternoon and my first thought was that I had been deserted. I'd never been truly alone. So kid, I'm on my own.

The album version is a different vibe again but I love this acoustic live version too… I am/was a nervous performer… I never felt prepared enough and had fear of my throat and mouth not doing as they should… it lead me down dark paths and now I don’t perform anymore.. well done to you for not having nerves 😅

I've no idea why I don't have it, Ani! It's interesting to contemplate. I'd encourage you to perform again, even if you just record yourself and show no-one. With all that said, it's been a decade since I last performed music in public, so maybe my feelings have changed. I did a play a few years ago, and that was okay.

@@IzzyIzenstain thank you 🙏 when covid hit, my band stopped gigging. I took up Smule as a way of scratching the creative itch by creating multi layered mash ups over a backing track. But alas, I have record-anxiety too 😅 every time I hit record my throat changes… it’s weird 😅 but it’s only for myself so it doesn’t matter. Actually recorded something last night for the first time in about a year 😅 anyway thanks for taking the time to respond! @@anibindi3752 No worries, Ani! I've experienced that clamming up feeling before. I find the best way to overcome it is some form of regular relaxation process (I think it has a lot to do with tension in the body and mind), and also just regularly recording to grease those wheels, know. He is a great talent for sure! Well done for getting back at it! Creativity is how the soul breathes!

_Just to be clear: I basically wrote the same thing in Portuguese and in English, in case you need translation (I tend to use more difficult words, and since you said you don't know many words I may have said something you don't know)_ Eu não posso assistir agora, mas seu português é incrível! _________________________ I can't watch the video now, but your Portuguese is amazing! Pronunciation wise - for someone who says knows as little/basic as you do - you're really at a great spot (and honestly in general, it sounds very natural)! Unfortunately I can't watch the video now, but I'll be coming back to watch it later. It seriously is the first time I see/hear a non native speaker with such a good pronunciation, and I'm sure if you keep up like this, it will end up sounding extremely natural.

Muito Obrigado, Carolina! I've picked up the basics from Brazilian friends and when I was in Brazil last year a few people complimented my pronunciation. It did cause some confusion amongst people when I couldn't understand a lot. I'm not sure why I've picked up the pronunciation so well, maybe it's the musicians ear.

Thank you for the review 😊. She has one guitar and one piano song acoustic section of her eras tour and she switches her songs up for the tour nightly so it can feel like a different show. She also adds mash-ups. Paraphrasing, but I saw an interview about how much thought she puts into which songs/mashups she sings which night/location. Also, it gives you a chance to hear one of your favorite songs that maybe didn’t make the set list. They come as a surprise. With over 100 shows performed in the eras tour I find this feat awesome.

Bom dia! Que surpresa! This is such a great song that sums up Taylor’s journey in a bittersweet way. It was pretty cool to see this live. I didn’t hear any of her but I was so close to her at this moment 😂. She always does 2 surprise acoustic songs every night on the Eras tour but I rarely think they are the best of her acoustic performances. They often feel rushed and like she’s trying to scream over the crowd. The guitar and piano are usually simplified a bit…understandable as she’s 2 hours in at this point and re-learning a lot of her songs. I just don’t think they always have the dynamics and the delicacy she’s so good at. My favorite one is “How Did it End”. The crowd was quieter during that one and it’s gorgeous.
