I won't deny how scary it is that toxic metals can be found in tampons, nor how alarming how unregulated tampon manufacturing is, but I will put this from the actual study: "Although our study found the presence of toxic metals in tampons, future studies are necessary to assess whether metals can leach out of tampons and become bioaccessible for vaginal absorption. Thus, we cannot speculate on potential harm to the health of menstruators. It is critical that future studies evaluate the potential for metal leaching from tampons and uptake into the body. Previous studies have conducted risk assessments for other types of chemicals found in tampons, but generally came to discrepant conclusions about their risk to tampon users (Upson et al., 2022). A major obstacle in interpreting these risk assessments is the lack of data on the absorption of chemicals through the vaginal mucosa" The study particularly noted the presence of lead, arsenic and cadmium as metals of high risk to health, with lead having no safe levels of exposure, which matches what I found on both the CDC and WHO websites on lead poisoning. This isn't to say that tampons ARENT actually harmful, but that it's inconclusive that tampons can cause poisoning. It just means that tampon production needs to be researched and regulated better.
@SmallSpoonBrigade5 ай бұрын
That was what I was wondering and some of those metals are used by the body, so if a bit of iron, calcium, copper or zinc are absorbed, it's probably not an issue as the body needs some. The other ones like lead and arsenic though are something to worry about if the concentration is high enough to actually leach into the body.
@katekramer76795 ай бұрын
I'm stunned there haven't already been studies about absorption. Would it not be easy to test this with some nontoxic element? I ask that sincerely, I don't know how feasible that is.

The tampon chemical thing is being blown way out of proportion and people are jumping to conclusions prematurely. Not that it's impossible for this to be an issue but the study this is all coming from found these chemicals in very very, very small amounts, like probably it's just from the cotton growing in soil that has chemicals in it like all soil does. There's no reason to believe yet that this is harmful. It's very much a "further study needed" situation. So understandable if anyone wants to take a break from tampons until we know for sure but like probably you're completely fine.

Arsenic is needed by our bodies in very very small doses. Everything is toxic if it’s above recommended levels of intake, even water and oxygen. So unless I see the actual levels it was found at I’m not concerned.
