Growing up, hearing my friends talk about their cultures/countries (Korea, japan, Italy, France, etc), I always was self conscious about talking about Pakistan and my culture. Compared to other asain countries I couldn't brag about how advanced it was or all the cool things you could do there. I always tried to focus on learning my friends culture instead of my own. I'm SO glad I'm out of that phase now, being able to rediscover urdu, history of Pakistan, my culture and family is so so freeing. Thank you so much for talking about this topic because this needs to be brought up more!

How soooo very sad! I’m Nigerian, we LOVE Desi culture and food because the professional colonizers (the British) brought Desis as servants/workers/admin to Nigeria and they brought Bollywood and so much more to the continent. My 4 year old daughter who is Nigerian asked to wear Indian clothes for Eid and I let her. The Desis at our masjid were sooo excited and it made her feel so beautiful. It makes me sad when people don’t see the beauty in their own cultures and traditions.

I am an Indian living abroad and have many Nigerian origin friends. They are great people with a rich culture. Indians and Nigerians are very similar, we had the same colonizers, we both are religiously diverse, and both of our countries our highly populated.

Once more Pakistanis realise this, and once more of the Punjabi, Muhajers and Sindhis realise this, the better their identity crises will fix up. @lopen nhioloipi yes Pakistan has a unique identity of its own. But that is part of the problem too "we don't like being associated with India". India/Pakistan were one nation at one point. This is why you have a lot of hatred between groups of people who are essentially separated by borders. The younger generation need to break that negativity.

You have no idea how important your content is. You’re speaking on the Pakistani identity struggle in the west which is something I only wish more people talked about. As someone raised in the US but who has very strong ties to my Pakistani culture and heritage, it’s sad to see how many of my peers caved in to peer pressure and tried to distance themselves. Pakistan has beautiful landscapes and a unique culture on its own. I feel as though when I was younger it was harder for me to distinguish myself from my Indian peers but knowing a lot more now about the history of the country and how it has set itself apart, I feel all the more connected to my Pakistani heritage. Would be interesting to see your take on the distinguished Pakistani culture. We need more Pakistani voices on YT talking about our identity and I’d love to see you bring them onto your channel if possible!

About the "chip on your shoulder" about England: OF COURSE YOU DO!!! My husband isn't Desi, he's Egyptian...but he's got a chip on his shoulder towards the British and the West in general because they looked at the map of the middle east and North Africa and divided the people by straight cookie-cutter lines. They pitted people against each other, and turned a group of one into a group of many who now fight each other. So yes, the chip on your shoulder is VALID.

I don't get how that's a problem. Iraq, Syria, Arabia, Egypt were all one state and things were fine. There were always many groups living together peacefully in Arab countries. Thank you for shedding light on this topic 🙌 I am a 17 yr old proud Pakistani girl. My parents were very proud of their identity and my mother always told me that “one who doesn’t respect their culture and traditions or is ashamed of them is never respected by others.” I cannot tell you the number of times my fellow Pakistani friends and relatives pretended to forget urdu after just months of moving to a western country. Some of the parents would be very proud of the fact that their child knows how to speak english better than urdu. Fortunately, this wasn’t the case for me. While staying in Canada, my parents made sure that I and my siblings were fluent in writing, reading, and speaking in Urdu. Urdu is such a beautiful language! It was the language that Muslim league fought to protect when it’s existence became threatened by the Congress. It pains me to think that during the partition, millions lost their lives and yet you have people that are fearful of associating themselves with their motherland, one that was found in the name of God after many sacrifices. Here at my highschool, I am the only Pakistani girl and let me tell you, in just a year I have educated many of my teachers and classmates on my country. Many of my friends can even say a few phrases in Urdu. I believe confidence plays a key factor in how you present yourself to others. Being ashamed of your past just shows you that though the British colonization of the land had ended in 1947, It remains on your mind till today. Seeing yourself inferior to others especially those that live in the west is a form of mental slavery in itself.

This reminds me of a few Filipinos I know. One claimed to be part Spanish/Japanese/Arabic and tried really hard to display different parts of those cultures. They decided to do a genetic test, either 23 and me or something similar, and found out they were mostly Filipino. A mix of indigenous Filipino group and the largest ethnic group in the Philippines (forgot what it’s called). They had a small mental break down and claimed the test was wrong and did several more tests. That was a few years back and haven’t heard anything since.

I am Bengali Muslim from Bangladesh. And both my parents have deep roots in Dhaka and I am thankful to Allah for my background which doesn't involve any foreigners. What we should all believe and accept is that we are all human beings and nobody is superior. I live in Canada and I can tell you that this inferiority complex is prevalent among desis who live in Western countries. I believe this has to do with the way parents raise their children in Western countries, and they don't raise them to be a desi but trying to pretent to become like western white people and the first mistake they commit is not speaking their language at home. Most Bengalis (from both Indian and Bangladesh) rarely speak Bengali at home with their kids, and by doing that they are sending a message to their kids that our language, which is core part of our identity, is nothing to be proud off.

I have witnessed this where I live in! It’s frustrating because people of your own race constantly distance themselves from making connections with people of the same race & projecting stereotypes (also acting like they’re better than the rest) to people of other races to be in the likes of them (and be accepted) because they don’t appreciate and understand that their race is perfectly fine, flaws and all. Sometimes it’s the system that you live and grow up in, that makes you feel like you must erase your racial identity in order to be accepted by others, especially a majority race of a country.

Thank you so much for this video! I’m from England and I cannot stress enough how many Desi’s try to distance themselves from their culture and project their inferior complex in such awful ways. It’s really sad, especially in girls/women too who have darker skin than what is considered the “ideal” skin tone in the desi community, we feel we have to prove ourselves so much harder than those who are fairer because of our inferiority complexes. In my country, Singapore, its well known amongst the Muslim Asian(Chinese, malay,indian) community that the Arabs here have superiority complex. On the surface, they seem normal, they will make friends with the Asians and work alongside with Asians, date(while leading to believe that they will marry) asians but at the end of the day they(and the whole Arab community) will only want to marry and socialise within their own race. Because most Muslims here have arabic names, to distinguish themselves from the Asian Muslims, they're too proud about their last names, making sure that people know their last names first ( Al- xyz). The irony is that they barely speak their own language already as their ancestors have adopted the asian culture after years of living here. This is just my( and many others) observation/experience. Having a celebrity from your ethnicity doesn't mean he represents your culture. Culture is represented through your soft power and sense of a unique identity. Problem with Pakistani is that they always try to link themselves to Mughals, Turks, Arabs or even Persians but it is not reciprocated by the others while they love to distance themselves from the Indian subcontinent but they are seen as part of the subcontinent anyway by others. But for Indians it is about a civilisational history and identity. I am not saying Indians in other countries don't have inferiority complex specially if they are bullied Bcz of their ethnicity, but Indians in general have a very strong sense of civilizational history and identity and we are a powerhouse when it comes to exporting culture, I would say that if any other culture truly penetrate the world other than european culture is Indian culture. Some examples are Yoga, Maths, Buddhism, Hinduism, concept of Karma and much more. Pakistanis could be proud of themselves but culturally have nothing to offer to the world. Bcz everything related to culture there is Indian or given by islamic invaders. Honestly it's not just Desi's who experience this. As an Arab, I can definitely attest that this "inferiority complex" is very prevalent in our communities as well, particularly when we compare ourselves to western societies. I think just the fact that all the world "super powers" or countries that are deemed to be "civilised, peaceful, democratic, and free" are mostly western societies (aka North America excluding Mexico, majority of Europe and Australia). Even their language is the most commonly used language across the world (English), whenever I visit my home country everyone thinks it is so cool that I can speak English fluently and everyone wants you to teach them. Many countries teach English as a second language in schools as well. Also, majority of the media we are exposed to reflects a western lifestyle. Whether it be movies or TV shows or just plain old social media, so much of it revolves around characters from western countries who are usually white and usually speak English. And it doesn't help that our societies are constantly plagued by war, famine and poverty because those western "super powers" continuously invade us, steal our resources and intervene in our governments. For them to remain in power, we must remain in ignorance, otherwise they would lose all their wealth and influence. Countries like ours are not supposed to evolve according to them. That's why we can never have peace and stability and follow islamic law precisely. When we compare ourselves to them we feel so inferior due to the contrast in our societies, which creates a desire to want to mimic them so that we may reach their level of "civilisation". Also, since they control the media, they only show the bad parts of our societies and the good parts of their societies. For example, whenever my country is shown on the news all you see is trash in the streets, ugly homes, fighting, sand everywhere, etc when in reality if you actually visit there is so much more incredible breathtaking sights and things to see and joy and laughter. And contrary to this, whenever western countries are presented on TV they pick the best parts to showcase. All you see are clean streets, water fountains, modern cutting edge architecture, etc. It makes you feel like that's what it looks like there all the time. But it's not. For ex, I live in Canada (which is a beautiful country) but when you see it on the news and what my family sees back home makes it look perfect, which is NOT true at all. There are dirty streets here, there are homeless people, people living in poverty, there is trash, factories, pollution, fighting, etc. But since these parts are rarely showcased to our own communities back home, it pushes the narrative in favour of the west, Making them appear "civilised, polished, happy and perfect". Our desire to be like them gives them greater influence and power over us. Ps: The Gulf is not just discriminatory to Desi or Pakistani people. They are racist to anyone who is not from there. My parents and many of their Arab friends have experienced racism there just because they're not locals. (not everyone of course, there are obviously many kind hearted & welcoming people in those areas as well ❤️)

I’m from the Gulf, and I must say that while the majority of us are very welcoming to anyone from any culture, unfortunatly there are still people among us who are not only racist to other cultures like you said but also racist toward other Arabian tribes in the SAME REGION. I am not sure why we, as Desis, should feel inferior to Arabs. Much of the wealth and progress that Arabs enjoy today has nothing to do with their exemplary ingenuity, superb work ethic, or societal contributions. Rather, they happen to be fortunate enough to live in a region of the world that is rich in fossil fuels. When a Desi shows signs of wealthy and prestige there is no asterisks behind their accomplishment, implying that their status in life is the result of purely fortunate circumstances. When an Arab shows wealth, it is highly probable that it had nothing to do with merit. There is always an asterisks behind their display of opulence. When a Desi ascends the economic ladder it is, more often than not, the result of grit, determination, intelligence, and innovation. There is a reason why South Asians are, just behind the Chinese, the most represented minority group in Silicon Valley - a bastion for the academic elite and a haven for the most innovative minds. Arabs don't even come close.

Most Pakistanis don't even realise Pakistani is not even an ethnicty but simple a nationality and that Pakistan is basically made up of 6 'mini' countries, each with their own ethnic group. |For example the Pashtuns are completely different to Punjabis while kashmiris are completely different to Balochis but all come together for Islam which is beautiful. Heck only 2 out of the 6 provinces share culture with India. So, I’m an Indian Muslim that grew up in the Gulf and I have extended relatives who are Pakistani, as well as friends that I have made in school and university. I really despise talking about this because it’s unsettling to hear but I have had some unpleasant experiences so I’d like to share them… Firstly, my Pakistani relatives grew up in Saudi Arabia but they masquerade themselves as Saudis, and completely erase or hide any Desi aspect to them. It’s uncomfortable to deal with because whenever there were any social gatherings, there was a clear divide between the family members and the ones that pretended to be Saudis always held themselves superior to the rest and only spoke Arabic. It was genuinely a tense atmosphere that felt discriminative. When there were moments where they had to speak Urdu, it felt like they couldn’t deal with speaking that language and their gazes were really condescending. Secondly, I used to have this friend in middle school who would put on an American accent even though she was born and raised in Pakistan and would berate me for suddenly including an Urdu word when I spoke English or talked about anything that was remotely Desi. She went as far as even giving herself an English nickname and would prefer to be called that instead. She has US citizenship so she would boast about that occasionally too. It was awful and she genuinely made me feel so bad about myself. And this last experience of mine is genuinely the worst because I befriended a guy whose dad is blatantly colorist and racist and has openly talked about he wants his daughter in law to be a gori. This man actively goes to the northern parts of Pakistan like Chitral and recruits young girls to marry the male members of his family all because they have Eurocentric features. He even encourages his own son to go abroad to Western countries and find a white girl to marry but it can’t be a Brown, Asian or Black girl. I genuinely was so nauseated how someone’s dad could fetishize and talk about women in such a way. It made me so angry. I don’t know where all of this stems from, I used to think it’s because they get grouped with Indians and Bangladeshis and didn’t like being associated with anything that could mean being perceived as Brown. It’s just sad, I wish they would just accept themselves for who they are.

I’ve met some who fiercely claimed they were Afghan, Iranian, Saudi but then spoke Urdu/Punjabi at home or would claim they had ancestry from these countries. You are spot on. I've witnessed how the brown / darker skin folks of any region are treated like 7th class citizens and therefore struggle to be accepted by their fair skin counterparts. Speaking as a brown person myself, the thing that I think we need to collectively realize is that no matter how much we crane for acceptance, the supremacy and superiority complexes (specifically of the West) will always see us as the same at the end of the day. I guarantee the average Chip Jones in the US has no idea that someone Pakistani is different from Arab. To them, you're all from somewhere "over there" and just label you all Middle Eastern. I am Pakistani and Moroccan and I didn't know there was a desi inferiority complex. All the Pakistanis (Nani, khalas, mother) in my life were strong independent women who were proud of being Pakistani (my mother was born and brought up in the UK so maybe there is something there?). After watching this video, sometimes in social situations, I start to reflect on incidents that use to happen during my schooling years as well as afterward that had to do with ethnic identity. I started to observe how some ethnic identities were "socially acceptable" by the way a person introduced themselves and how others responded to it. Some of the people received complements as well as attention and friendships based on how they identified. For example, and I laugh and cringe even typing this, but when I was in high school, there was a new student from a specific European country who used to get loads of attention and complements for their looks, preferences in books etc. Mind you this student was very shy and didn't like to talk much. Even through I studied British colonialism including covering topics in South Asia and grew up in a predominantly Muslim part of the UK, I never really put the two together so Desis having an inferiority complex never really made sense to me especially to the point of SoniaxFyza. But to clarify, yes, they are of Pakistani origin and the people with whom they went to school confirmed this when the scandal came out. They grew up in Birmingham and if you watch an older interview of them they have proper Birmingham accents so the one she's doing in the clips played are either fake or her accent has changed to the elite-Arab-who-went-to-an-international-school one. The UK's Muslim community is predominantly South Asian so a lot of the discourse (and other stuff) around being Muslim in Britain is largely catered towards the South Asian community, which even as an Arab is hard to navigate and can feel a bit alienating. But it also makes it more confusing as to where the inferiority complex comes from.

Being from India and living in the Philippines due to work, I have noticed this in Indians, but it is more about the white skin color fascination or validation of our culture by Whites. But, in contrast to Pakistanis, I have noticed that Hindus here are very proud of their origins and their 7000year old culture, same with other religions except the Muslims. The Hindus hold seminars and cultural programs, festivals almost everyday and majority of Indian women wear saree even to work, which is considered fashionable. Traditional arts, classical dances, filigree to study of paintings and architecture are learnt as well as linguistic studies are encouraged, the Indians still write in their traditional scripts like they did 2500 years ago. Nowadays, the Indian govt. has started an initiative to devise exam papers, books of any institution in all the 22 official languages of India( it was there earlier, just the no of languages was fewer to 11 or so) apart from English. Also, Bollywood has never been very true to our culture, so Indians are looking more to the southern Dravidian movie industries for content and creativity. Nevertheless, I see this as a welcoming step, but you can't deny the tonnes of reaction channels on KZbin on Indian affairs be it clothing, dance, songs etc.

As a brown british pakistani girl from my experience arab guys really fancy me alot. Never experienced this race colour thing. Even i have friends who are arab girls and colour has never been an issue. The only thing i see be an issue is accent. Men generally don't take into account race when fancying girls. The only women who genuinely have a problem with getting men's attraction due to race by default are women of African origin and dark skinned South Asian women. For most other women, the biggest barrier would be beauty standards rather than racial heiarchy, On the other hand, women tend to gauge men on status and race far more. That's why you will see Arab men with Pakistani women, but hardly ever Pakistani men with Arab women, or Pakistani men with Bangladeshi women, but hardly ever Bangladeshi men with Pakistani women, or white men with East Asian women but hardly ever East Asian men with white women.

Colonized, brainwashed, raised under Western influence/society as well as not fully bring able to integrate into our own culture, society etc. We are neither here nor there. Its a mess. With the rise of social media, and the incorporation of the British education curriculum alongside our national curriculum, we face an identity crisis. There is segregation within ourselves now. So, as a kid I thought that the only way to "escape" that would be to try to "act white". I kept my distance from POCs but I knew that I actually wanted to befriend them. Anyone who claims to be or Arab lineage is falsely convinced; there is no similarities other than religion. Pakistanis are South Asian. Majority of the local people who embraced Islam in modern day Pakistan were either Hindus, Buddhists or Zoroastrians, and not Arab. It's ok to acknowledge that certain features are traced back to foreign genetics, but it's also telling that you attribute more attractive features to being foreign despite no evidence of widespread foreign mixing in the subcontinent per genetic studies (check them out. Even Pashtuns are heavily Indian/Hindu genes) and cannot be Indian/Hindu because to you we're all dark and not attractive whilst anyone who has these features HAS to have ME and/or foreign input. Common sense should tell you that not every single person of a nation was r/ped and in the event that they were not every single one gave birth to a child that would be the result of ME and Indian DNA and thus lead to a population that is heavily mixed. That's basically what your comment proposes in a nutshell which is far fetched. South Asian genetic studied have disproven this over and over again. This is almost as bad as the colonialists who proposed an invasion theory (AIT) wherein white men raided India and produced children with mixed DNA so that MUST be how people in the NW look the way they do. Yet genetic studies disprove this again and again. As an Indian Punjabi Hindu, the land I'm from was invaded by Greeks, Persians, Turkic tribes, etc yet I'm 100% Indian per genetic tests. The affects of colonisation includes trying to divide and conquer, which was specially targeted to cause divisions between Muslims. When you start to focus too much on ethnicity and tribal connections your going to start to have real long term issues. It’s actually simple we’re Muslims and Islam dictates how we should think and act, if you follow Islamic principles then you will start to think about actions based on intentions and Quran and sunnah. A Pakistani can become inspirational so can a black person or an Arab or a European. Colour, tribe, ethnicity doesn’t matter because anyone can be a role model or any colour ethnicity can be regarded as someone you rather ignore. I immigrated to Canada a few years back. The only group of people who have consistently shown condescension to me are second generation Desis. They consciously stay away from associating with “me the person”, while stealing the cooler parts of my culture whenever it suits them. Many of these faksters would happily peacock to a white audience “I am so desi, I dance on Bollywood music all the time”, “Look at me, I add extra chillies in my dessert coz I am sooo desi”, to show off their exoticness. At the same time they are full of platitudes like “desi mentality” is so bad and “culture not equals religion”. Probably their parents gave them this impression, as they are permanently trapped in a time capsule of 1970s India/Pakistan , while rest of motherland has moved on. I am not even coming from a place of prejudice, I did not even know shit-bias like this existed before coming here. I am happy in my career and life now. A very interesting video. I think you are mixing up a few different issues here: a) Firstly, the Pakistani inferiority complex is unique and stems from a history and a mentality that tries to distance itself from its South Asian roots. It is perhaps a consequence of the nation building process where it is repeated officially and through history books how different you are from Indians...to the point that your heroes are the conquering muslims from Persia or Arabia...those are the guys you identify with and whose conquest you justify (they did not invade Sindh 17 times for sheer greed, lust for power and conquest etc etc but to free pious Muslim women held captive by a cruel local ruler.) Someone from your own area, race and culture (someone who might be your ancestor or who your ancestors fought for like Raja Dahir or Maharaja Ranjeet Singh) is demonized continuosly as you grow up and you are encouraged to identify with the Arabs, Persians or Uzbeks etc. So over time every one develops this schizophrenia....if you believed every Pakistani muslim about their family history you would assume Pakistan was an empty piece of land which was settled by Arabs....you can see this play out particularly in Dubai where many of the Pakistani kids growing up show much more desire to assimilate and assume Arabic behaviours as compared to the Indians (even the Muslim Indians) who clearly identify with India as their country of origin...you can also see this in 3rd generation british Pakistanis who will start wearing Arabic dress as being ethnic with even the style of hijaab changing over time to emulate Arabic fashions....and this in UK when they are surrounded by whites...they dont want to be white they want to be Arabic b) The bit about 2nd generation desis in the US and Europe sticking to whites as opposed to being caught in Indian/Pakistani circles is not so much about having a desi inferiority complex as it is about simple identity formation and self-perception...2nd generation kids see themselves as Americans, they feel American and dont want to be treated differently.....that makes them behave unnaturally when a new desi immigrants etc start claiming a familiarity or trying to get friendly....it's like 'Oh so you're from Punjab? Good for you...me, i'm from Texas'. So I would argue this is not exactly about desi inferiority complex as much as it is anxiety about fitting in....and BTW, I have seen a small minority of desis react negatively to this being seen as exotic and falling back on an extreme pride of their native culture...where a desi guy born and brought up in the US self-identifies as an Indian and is culturally even more Indian than current day Indians in Mumbai....anyway, point is both these extremes are not natural and you sense that the person is not stable and completely comfortable with who they are...but this case I would say is not an inferiority complex but struggles of identity and belonging c) The common desi inferiority complex is about not being fair skinned and it's all over South Asia...I think British Empire and caste system...all of it perhaps has led to this mentality... d) Amongst Indians there is a complex that India has not got its due and there is an embarrassing desire for validation and praise from whites and it is really embarrassing Anyway, very interesting topic and very interesting video...though embarrassing, these things need to be talked about openly

Regarding A) I don't think this is as problematic as you point it out to be, nearly all Pakistanis being Muslim, they obviously relate to their Muslim heritage - in the conquering of the sub-continent. But I would agree that it gets quite overdone, in an effort to prop India as 'the other'. Hence Islam becomes 'nationalised' in a sense. It is strange to have someone hate on another nation where there are just as many Muslims living there as your own... By all means, hate the government when it oppresses its Muslim minorities no doubt, but not the entire populace. I'm a Pakistani second generation born and raised in the West, I don't find myself as enthusiastic about the modern national identity as I am with the complex history of the subcontinent as a whole, ranging from the Mughals, the Persian language, Islam and such. Learning about the immense intellectual contributions such as the subcontinent Islamic scholarly tradition was probably the main thing that caused an uptick in my interest with this heritage of mine. And it is a diverse tradition, where you have Indian scholars of the sub-continent influencing Arabs with their writings, and vice versa.

Its the stuff belonging to aliens. Indian civilization is 5000 years old based on Hinduism and Sanskritic heritage. Pakistanis should recognize their real identity and heritage and not some mythical Middle eastern centric delusions.

​@@sureshpanikker5083 It's good that you bring this up, I think this is one of the fundamental differences between certain Indians in how they view Pakistanis (or even Muslims/Christians broadly) in general. Is what is considered 'foreign' is merely a matter of the timeline? Is Islam an 'Arab religion'? Is religion connected to one's land? Is one's land connected to a religion? These are questions we should be answering in order to better understand each other. I would also like to add that I did make a mistake, that I forgot to add the crucial subcontinent Indian culture too, such as Sanskrit and even Hinduism as you put it. I would like to understand them better too. Early Muslim scholars saw the brilliant intellectual feats of Indian/Hindu scholars in the field of Mathematics, so much so that they ended up borrowing the entire set of 'Hindu numbers' (called Hindu Arabic numerals here in the West). Eventually the West, borrowed it from the Muslims and so on. If early Muslim scholars respected and even learnt from the earlier Hindu scholars in this way, then we should certainly learn the history of such a tradition. Just like how we learn the history of the Western tradition. I hope to learn about it all more eventually, Inshallah.

Pakistani people are my least favourite muslims because they were always jealous about me being white. Im Bosnian which makes me a white european muslim and all of my pakistani friends were always jealous of me. My cousin Muhamed has blonde hair and blue eyes and he was always bullied by other pakistanis because they want to be white so badly. They would beat him up all the time. And I spoke to other Bosnians and they say the same thing, this one blonde bosnian girl told me a pakistani lady called her a prostitute for no reason at all. Pakistanis, please control your jealousy and act like a proper muslim!!! We Bosnians do not deserve your animosity!!

Also sometimes we don’t like a video AFTER we have watched it, NOT Before, how else can we say We like or don’t like it? Don’t dismiss critiques or dislikes. I have always felt proud of being Pakistani and our culture and our Indian civilization, I grew up in modest society in Pakistan, I enjoyed socializing with friends in the streets and schooling there. I sometimes don't agree with the fact how politicians and elites have taken advantage of Pakistan. I'm a British Pakistani, born and raised in England. Dentist by profession. I speak Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, Turkish, Persian and a few other languages, I have lived in the Middle East for most part of the last decade between Turkey and Egypt and done plenty of traveling in the region. I have never felt the need to hide my Pakistani origins, I wear it like a badge of honour on my chest, I'm very comfortable and proud of it (not the overly nationalistic chest-thumping type either). I have a deep bond with Pakistan, it's a religious connection more than a cultural one but that is not to say I do not drink Pakistani tea or have Pakistani food, I do, most days. Continuing, I have received nothing but love and respect from Turks, Arabs, Iranians and Europeans. And those people that do have a problem with it, I seriously could nott care less about their opinion. I'm not seeking acceptance, I find that weak and I guess that is where the problem lies.. People usually respect you when you respect yourself and self-esteem and self-worth should not come from superficial things or labels but your character, values and your achievements. I guess some American Pakistanis need to look into the mirror and embrace and accept themselves for who they are and stop feeling so insecure or pretending to be something or someone that they are not. Pakistan Zindabad. P.S I have met Iraqis pretending to be Turks, Syrians identifying themselves as Iraqis (this was due to racism) - It's not just a 'Desi thing". We live in sad times.

That's very rare for Iraqis to be pretending to be Syrians and Turks. First of all, there are Iraqi people living in Turkey and Syria for a long time so they call themselves "Syrians and Turks because they became part of the Middle Eastern Turkish culture and Middle Eastern Syrian Arab culture. 99% of Iraqi people are proud to be Iraqi. And tell people they are Iraqi no matter where they go around the world.

It's rare to meet a Middle Eastern person no matter Lebanese Arab, Syrian Arab, Iranian, Turkish, Armenian, and Iraqi Arab to say they are something else and deny their heritage. All of them are proud to be Middle Eastern. If they weren't proud they wouldn't be following their Middle Eastern cultures and marrying Middle Eastern women all the time.

There are far more South Asians pretending to be Middle Eastern or other cultures but it's so rare for Middle Eastern Iraqi people and other Middle Eastern people to pretend to be something they aren't. As a none Pakistani myself I did notice the inferior complex many of my Pakistani friends had, that was one of the reasons why I struggled to maintain friendships with them. It was toxic, I only have 2 Pakistani friends they're happy and confident in who they're, confidence is so sexy.

I'm Nepali-Australian, so I never really understood this aspect of the South Asian Muslim experience but that part was incredibly interesting. I do not agree with your assessment. It is primarily those Desis who live in the Gulf Arab world who have been made to think like this because they are constantly belittled and made to feel inferior. On the other hand in the USA and Canada specifically Indians are well respected and very high achieving and Middle Easterners specifically Arabs are not. I have noticed deep seated inferiority complex from Arabs in front of white Americans and Canadians moreso than Desis in the West. Therefore alot of this has to do with the society they grew up in.
