Shaping a shortboard single fin. Surfboard dimensions are 6' x 20.5 x 2.5. I’ve only shaped a handful of boards and am not an expert but this shaping process works for me. I'm still getting used to working with a planer which is why I also shape by hand using sanding blocks to help with accuracy.

How do you correct the thickness 1ft from nose and 1ft from tail? Do you measure and if it's too thick, just make the rocker curve extend further toward the center of the board?
@BendheimBoards

Use a measuring bar to measure and keep removing foam and stinger till you get there. Keep the transitions smooth

I began shaping my first board, and I realized that I traced the outline on the top of the board rather than the bottom. Is this something to worry about?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
It’s better to trace your outline in the bottom because if you don’t cut exactly vertical with your saw, you won’t mess up the hard edge on the bottom of the tail.

Nice effort! However, templet first, then foil. Less foam to mow hence faster. Also, don't use the saw up and down like that when cutting templet; use the saw like a carpenter (hold grip w index finger extended for guidance). Hold the saw more horizontally and curve the saw as you are cutting so that you are just outside the template line. Nose and tail will be off a touch (bring back in with sureform) but most the templet will be super smooth. Use the planer on its side to true-up; you can "feel" any bumps this way. Any bumps should be there on purpose. Since you have full length templates, you could use a router to template. Takes practice, but this is a 45 min board (unless you are really oldskool .... then its 30 min max).
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback and advice! I've done it both ways and prefer to foil first so the template is easier to cut without the hard outer skin on the blank. I've seen so many different methods in shaping that I just decided to go with what works best for me and what I'm most comfortable with. I'm sure there are lots of areas I can improve at. Thanks for watching and commenting man!

Dude, Tanner is being nice to you. Just because you shape a certain way does not mean it is the correct way, and you must tell everyone how to “fix” their methods. Shaping is an art, and art doesn’t have rules. In fact, hearing you lecture him only convinces me that you are a copy machine, and you don’t have the ability to think outside the box. I shape, and I also take down the thickness before I draw the template. I actually use a jigsaw with a longer blade to cut the template, and I can do that because I’ve already planed the board, and the bottom is flat, so I don’t get angled template cuts. We all do things differently. By the way, throwing the “Nice effort!” Comment is condescending and screams of narcissism.

Why didn’t you do the outline on the bottom AFTER you planed off the skin on the bottom?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
I drew the template before and after skinning the blank. The reason I drew it before was just to visualize what my new template outline would look like before I started shaping. I drew the template again after skinning the blank to cut the outline.
