TBPPM Webinar 24-2 | Strategies for capacity building for private providers in Nigeria

The World Bank describes engaging private health providers in TB service delivery as both one of the greatest opportunities and the biggest challenges for improving TB control . On the plus side, the engagement of private sector health providers for provision of TB services has become an increasingly important strategy to reach individuals that access care in the private sector, with quality-assured diagnosis and treatment. Nigeria has recorded tremendous success in steadily expanding Public-Private Mix (PPM) contribution in recent years, with PPM accounting for 25% of all TB cases notified in 2022, compared to 10% in 2017. Despite these successes however, TB service delivered by the private sector is of variable quality, with a tendency of some private providers to show poorer performance. A key root cause of this is the high staff attrition and mobility in private facilities, which creates a recurring need to build the capacity of new personnel, as previously trained ones exit.
In this webinar, we shall explore these challenges and the ways and means by which they are being tackled in Nigeria’s PPM implementation.
