Can we address how awesome the conversation between Tommy and Joel was once they got on the same page. The level of emotional intelligence Tommy showed in that moment was amazing. For him to say “I know you’re happy for me, it’s complicated for you. I’m sorry.” You don’t get too many bright spots like that in a show centered around survival and the ugly side of man kind

That line as well as the line "I already said yes Joel" was two of my favourite lines from Tommy. It shows the great connection of the two brothers. Even though they haven't seen each other for months or years, or how different their lives are from each other, the brotherly love is 100% still there. "Like you dont have to give excuses anymore, I already said i will do it"

Honestly, the whole show and TLOU games (both of them) really are centered on being able to stay attached, or reconnect, to one's humanity despite being entrenched in the darkest recesses imaginable.

I keep commenting on that everywhere. The Native American woman is Elaine Miles - mostly known for her role as Marilyn Whirlwind from tv series 'Northern Exposure'... her deadpan attitude and humour was great in that tv show. I was so happy to see her in this episode. Man is portrayed by Graham Greene who (among other things) also was in Northern Exposure... 'Northern Exposure' was for a long time my feel good tv show... the gallery of characters was amazing.

“Dream of sheep ranches on the moon “ I find this line to be really deep and the message it conveys is really powerful. When Ellie asked Joel what would they do after the fireflies found a cure, Joel responded: Oh, it's a "we"? This pretty much says a lot about Joel 'not wanting' to be with Ellie after a cure is found. Joel wants to spend the rest of his life on a sheep ranch, whereas Ellie wants to be an astronaut; two totally different paths. When Ellie went to sleep Joel said "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon", which means that he actually wants their paths to cross! As much as he denies it, he now sees Ellie as part of his life, kind of a daughter. It shows the duality of Joel; on one side he is cold and says that Ellie is just cargo, but on the other side, his heart sees Ellie as his daughter.

I imagine when Joel talks to Tommy about his dreams that it's most likely memories of Sarah that he relives; and in a world such as theirs even good dreams have become nightmares for Joel because when he wakes he's instantly reminded that Sarah isn't there and why, which speaks to his line " all I know is when I wake up... I've lost something." Imagine being so afraid to go to sleep because you fear the idea of possibly seeing your loved ones only to lose them again upon waking up to an endless nightmare. Life truly did stop for Joel about the same time his wrist watch stopped.😔

I like how this show really does take all points of view into consideration where all the main characters have reasons that make sense from their perspectives. We've been with Joel (and Ellie) the most, so we're going to empathize with them the most. One thing Joel said in the first episode was that (from how he sees it) Marlene turned Tommy against him. So, they had a falling out and that's why Tommy left, along with probably being sent somewhere by the Fireflies, but he eventually cut ties with them also. From Tommy's POV he didn't expect to see Joel again. In the game, it's made more clear that there was a falling out. Ellie asks Joel about Tommy when they hadn't reached him yet and Joel says something about he believes Tommy's last words to him were, "I never wanna see your goddamn face again." In the game, also, it makes it seem like Tommy definitely blames Joel for all the horrible shit they did together 'cause he says something like, "I got nothin' but nightmares from those years together." Joel says something about how what he did saved their lives and Tommy says, "It wasn't worth it." So, that's MUCH harsher than here where it seems more like circumstances of miscommunication. A lot of time has passed (months), so Tommy didn't probably think that Joel was still worried about him, let alone would come across country for him. Maria, didn't have the life that Joel & Tommy had and used to be a DA who "put bad guys in prison" so I'm sure the stories of what Joel & Tommy did, killing innocent people, did not sit right with her and Joel being the older brother, she seemed to blame him, although Tommy blamed the both of them, but felt he needed to get away from that to live a better life somewhere. It's all complex and subtle 'cause none of them hate one another nor are wrong for feeling/assuming what they did. Both Joel and Tommy are different people than when they were together now which also helps for them to have perspective on each other and move past that which caused their falling out.

The town of Jackson IS seen in Part 1 (from a distance). The developers wanted to actually make levels in there. They even had a lot of concept art for it. They couldn't present it properly in Part 1 on account of budget & time reasons. That's why we meet Tommy at the dam near Jackson. In the game, the community is fairly new so some folks are at the dam, trying to repair the turbines. From what we hear about the town in the games, tho... it is VERY much like what was presented in the show.

Thanks, TBR! Thanks, Samantha! 🪶 Another solid episode with an effective cliffhanger. I especially loved seeing *Elaine* *Miles* playing a small role; I enjoyed her in over 100 episodes of NORTHERN EXPOSURE (1990). It was just as delightful to see *Rutina* *Wesley* again after enjoying her work in most of TRUE BLOOD (2008), several episodes of HANNIBAL (2015) and a single episode of THE WALKING DEAD (2019). ❧ If you're curious about the movie the townsfolk of Jackson City, Wyoming were watching together, it was THE GOODBYE GIRL (1977) and I highly recommend it if you're ever in the mood for a great comedy/drama/romance! #TBRSchmitt #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO

For TBR, who said "I don't know if I remember this communist community", Tommy mentioned it - that's why they were at the dam, fixing power for the town because the turbine had failed - but you never actually went inside. You did briefly see it from outside the walls when Joel and Ellie parted ways with Tommy. They looked down on the town from the ridge above, and Tommy said "Kids'll be watching movies tonight".

And it's written by Neil Simon, the theatre legend who wrote The Odd Couple and Barefoot In The Park and about a million other comedies. And... now there's this fun connection to The Last of Us.

This has, most chances, already been pointed out and/or speculated on by your Patreon folks, but I am thinking the reason why starting a fire this time was okay (I assume) was that after Joel had said there were caves by the river and they would camp out in them, I think he felt safe enough starting the fire with only one entry point for someone to see it... and perhaps that entry point over looked the river... again... maybe? ;-)

The conversation between Joel and Tommy was quite different in the game, much more aggressive. In fact, they practically came to blows. Joel's basic argument in the game was, "These are your people (the Fireflies), this is your cause, you finish the job!" I think that was a bit of a front though; Joel's real reasons were closer to what we got in the show, but his character was too closed off from his emotions to ever break down the way you saw in the show.

With regards to being able to show character between the game and the show, people would have spent far more time with these characters in the game rather than the show. There is lots of dialogue being spoken while in the game, not just the cutscenes. Plenty of time to get to know Joel and Ellie. The show is expanding on some plot points and emotions but players would probably feel closer to the characters in the game. Being in control of actions in the game also adds quite a lot.

The only problem is it is basically out in the middle of no where so don't think your internet or your selection for food is going to be as large as what you get on the coasts. The "communist community" isn't seen in full until the sequel game (in Part 1, you see it in the distance at one point). I understand why Tommy can't radio Joel. I am sure lots of people in town have friends and family out there. Every new person you tell is a security risk...because who are they telling? It's like the game people play of telling secrets but then swearing every new person they tell to secrecy...that is a recipe for *_not_* keeping the secret. And I'd be surprised if Maria didn't especially forbid telling "Old 'Homicide' Joel" where Paradise was on the map. Protagonist or no, he used to kill people just to take their stuff.

@Pandaemoni
@Pandaemoni Жыл бұрын
@@gailseatonhumbert Yes, he did, but Maria seems to think that Joel led him to it. If anything, she doesn't want Joel to turn Tommy back into that person. She seems concerned Joel will do that to Ellie (or worse). PS Also, it occurs to me there is backup for Maria blaming Joel. Joel himself says that Tommy was always a follower. That struck me as an idd description for why he joined the military and the Fireflies, but it probably also applies to the group he, Joel and Tess were in, and Maria may see thst in Tommy. Also, Joel seems to see those murders as just something they had to do to survive and not much else, whereas Tommy, in the game, says he "still has nightmares" suggesting persistent trauma and a greater level of remorse than Joel displays (especially in the game) and that is ongoing, which I am sure Maria must know about.

One of the bigger changes in Joel's character for the show is his desire to find Tommy. In the game they haven't had contact for ages, and Joel's only motivation for transporting Ellie is just money at first Having Joel be concerned for his brother from the first episode makes Tommy's relative lack of change from the game seem more unsympathetic.

Come on, now. The Tommy apprehension is a bit much. Walking in Joel & Ellie's shoes is understandable, but Tommy's also had his plight with the fireflies and personal journey. Demonizing him without knowing what he's been through also is somewhat unfair.

Because Tommy didn't let Joel know he was okay Tess, Joel's partner of many years died. I am not team Tommy and I am really not team Maria.

The game isn't that long, It should take like 12-15 hours to finish, That's short for a title like that, the 2nd game is like 30-35 hours long

The only time I ever finished in 12 hours was when I blasted through on easy for specific collectables, after already knowing the game back to front. Usually more like 17+ hours for me, but I like to take the time to look around.

Joel was stabbed on his right side. In the next episodes he's seen with the wound on his right side.

Why? She plays her well. Skeptical of Joel while also kind of seeing that he IS different than the last time she saw him. She’s protective of Tommy and is obviously a good leader. What’s not to like?
