I love how the show made Joel more human and more vulnerable. He's a 50ish year old man with severe PTSD. The little bits here and there of him losing his hearing and him opening up to Tommy were great additions.

I like that you guys pause the video if you have to talk about the scene. A lot of reactors just start talking non stop while missing every key part of the damn thing 😂

I completely agree! I really like that they do that too I politely said to another reactor that I liked his reactions but I wanted him to pay attention a bit more. He was asking questions to something they literally just answered but he missed because he was talking. He just got defensive. Glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I totally understand why Joel was angry/betrayed at Tommy at their reunion. TESS DIED trying to find Tommy because Tommy stopped communicating. The whole reason for the journey was because Tommy dropped off. All he had to do was radio back saying “I’m good bro, but I gotta go off grid.” I’d be hella bitter too if I risked my life, lost my partner only to find my brother living a life of luxury.
@-sanju-
@-sanju- Жыл бұрын
Well not really. Tess died because they tried to get Ellie to the fireflies who were supposed to be alive at the capitol building. Joel *did* want to go and find Tommy but that's not the reason they originally left the QZ.
@blurrylinesx8039
@blurrylinesx8039 Жыл бұрын
@SJ Wrong, Tommy is 100% the reason they left the QZ. The only reason they even agreed to smuggling Ellie was because Marlene promised them a truck and a battery. Ellie brings this up herself in the opening scene of ep 3, when she affirms Tess' death wasn't on her. It was all because they needed a battery. Tess and Joel would've never agreed to smuggle Ellie that very same night if Joel wasn't desperate thinking Tommy was gonna die on his own. And even with Ellie out of the picture, they probably would've gone out of the QZ to get the battery somewhere else. So yeah, if Tommy had warned his brother that he was alright, Tess would still be alive. We wouldn't have a story, but she would be.

I think Joel is also upset that he lost Tess ultimately because he was desperate to get out here to "save" Tommy. If Tommy had just sent a message that he was fine and going off grid, Tess would probably still be alive. Of course then we wouldn't have a show. :)

I think Joel’s anger in the tommy scene is valid. All that loss and pain that Joel experienced on this journey could have been avoided by one message from Tommy.

It's pretty simple. He just crossed 2000 miles to rescue Tommy because he was sure Tommy's silence meant he was in trouble. Meanwhile Tommy just shined him on.

Tommy should know his brother. By not messaging joel back to let him at least know he was safe and wouldn’t be sending anymore messages he should’ve known he would try to find him across the country and that could’ve easily gotten him killed. Then joel arrives and to see tommy is living it up and he just blows over not messaging by saying “the wrong ppl could show up” is kinda shitty to your only brother
@nura_98
@nura_98 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Joel said that what drives him forward is the family (Tommy) and he was so sure that he would find him and save him Tommy could have gone to a place where no one would see him and send Joel a signal that he was safe and didn't need to worry about him That would have made Joel happy just to hear that and he wouldn't have to risk his life and cross the country to find him thinking that something had happened to him!! And then he thinks that Joel is angry because he is living his life now and will become a father??!

Interesting thoughts about how the fungus would do during the winter season. Well, to explain a bit from what's shown in the games, it can exist in colder temperatures depending on certain factors. For example, from the second game there's a group of infected in a building after they hunted and ate a moose. So it seems the fungus is smart enough to get them to huddle inside to not freeze to death yet hunt so they can stay fed. In snow storms outside of shelter, they do get frozen in place and for the most part stay like that, with a few working out of it if they see a survivor. But they would still die from exposure since the host can't survive.

@@Oakland510 I know. After intensive training. With a lot of knowledge about it. I mean, Occam's razor, maybe the dog could, maybe couldn't, but Marie said "that was us faking being villains". I just guessed they wouldn't dare using infected people to train the dog (just him??) in a little community, risking the 28 days later effect in the garrison

I agree, something Tommy said too in the mess hall to Joel and Ellie when they were eating: “ mostly bark”. He could’ve said it figuratively but maybe he meant it literally. Like it’s just a scare tactic they use.

Well we know that dogs can at least detect something is wrong with infected people based on the dog Mercy in episode 1 responding to the old lady's early onset of infection. So it's not unreasonable to expect that dogs can be trained to smell infected people.

I really enjoyed the way the Native American elderly couple were clearly so happy to see and interact with a kid. Ellie is probably the reason the old woman made them soup because a child in this world shows at least some level of humanity in the person caring for them. I also hope that the Jackson community goes out and brings them back to the community so the old woman can get back to people and they can act like grandparents to all those children. I want them in some future season so bad.

Yeah, I almost feel guilty saying it but Joel has been transformed into a fully 3 dimensional real person and it blows game-Joel out of the water (who just feels like a robotic caricature compared to Pascal). I don't care how good people's memories are of the games, it's a complete no-brainer as far as I'm concerned; in terms of the characterisation, the show is a clear improvement.

I'm a biologist and that didn't even occur to me but you're absolutely right. The 'shroom people would have to go dormant in ye old Canada (or similar), or just avoid it altogether. Next series: Lichen People! (Lichen can grow in those temps and are part fungus, part bacteria, part other fungus). And, I can't help it, just a plug for your observational and analytical skills: I don't know what fields you're going into (if at all) but you both would be excellent scientists. Cool heads and great analytical abilities, curiosity, and open minds. Pretty much the recipe right there.

a lot of ppl are commenting why Joel is so bitter towards Tommy and that Tommy should've left a message and while that does make sense and my heart still hurts for Tess, I have a feeling that even if Tommy told him that he'd be going off the grid, Joel would've thought wtf why? is he being held hostage?? and go look for him anyway

And if that were the case, then Joel & Tess are on their own and doing it on their own volition. I’m just saying Joel has every right to be upset and feel betrayed by Tommy. We had bunnies when I was a kid and some on photos look basically like a plush toy. Me when they reached Jackson: :') Me when they enter the hall: ;_; Me when they show REDACTED: T_T Me when they show baby Shimmer: OH MY FUCKING GOD STOP! Damn TLoU 2 PTSD. The amount of references and foreshadowing for Part 2 and some future Part 1 stuff in this episode is insane. She definitely has to re-watch this one when they adapted Part 2. Take a good look at the pins on the map too. Can't wait for "Left Behind" tomorrow! We might see what we didn't see in the game.
@itachi2816

Personally, I didn't really like the way they adapted this part of the game here. I think the "Joel and Tommy got into a fight years ago and haven't spoken since, but Joel still had an idea of where try to look for his brother" from the game worked better. Maybe in the show adaptation they wanted to give Joel a stronger motivation to accept go into this journey with Ellie, idk maybe they felt that Tess's death and begging wouldn't be a strong enough motivation to convince the audience of why Joel is going into this, so they decided to create this narrative that Joel and Tommy were still in contact and Joel would be on this journey to save Tommy. Things get strange when you stop to think about some things. For example, this could have been resolved if Tommy and Joel had communicated via radio, or how strange it is that at some points in the show they mention Tommy and Joel having actually fought in the past and Joel complaining to Marlene about her turning his brother against him and gives you the idea that they would no longer be in contact since then (Which is the setting in the game, that's where they're getting these dialogues from, they fought and went their separate ways ever since. But then they change for the show that they still had some kind of contact despite that, and overall this change felt bit strange for me).

Tommy drives me nuts. Totally unapologetic about ghosting his brother, apparently unconcerned about the stress that would cause. He's clearly created a narrative that he was "just following Joel" when he murdered people, ignoring that Joel followed Tommy into things he didn't want to be doing to protect Tommy from his own stupidity. Then he tells his brother about this dangerous trip they are going to take and, in spite of the fact that his brother has told him that he nearly died due to being deaf and slow...backs out and let's Joel go on his own. Tommy's a follower, takes little responsibility for his actions or choices and let's others make them for him. He's also not very bright...as he doesn't bother to understand the structure of the community he lives in. This is not a good man and you wouldn't want him having your back. It seems like Joel views him through pure sentimentality because he certainly wouldn't want a guy like Tommy on a mission.
