One thing about Joel's panic attack in Jackson: if Sarah had lived, she'd have been in her mid-thirties, and could very well have had a child of her own about the age of the pair he saw.

There's an even bigger time jump in the game. As soon as Henry pulls the trigger it cuts to black (you don't get the burial scene or any aftermath) and then fades back in as Joel and Ellie reach the dam.

Not really. In the game it only jumps to fall. Here we skip to winter almost immediately.

Joel's line about loss makes sense from his perspective. He's lost a child, lost her in his arms as he was trying to protect her, probably the greatest loss someone can have and feel. He basically just knows Ellie as a kid who has just grown up safely in the QZ. She hasn't opened up to him about anyone she's lost. He's been suffering from this loss for longer than she's been alive. It's a line people didn't like much in the game but they still kept it here in the show cause it does make sense.

Also people say cruel things as a response to being hurt. Ellie pushed the “Sarah Button” in a not very nice way, and Joel responded harshly. I think they kept it in because it’s a realistic thing for Joel to say, even if he knows it isn’t true.

17:20 yeah, you're fairly spot on Very simply put: Ellie is just glad that this person who cares for, who she cares for, has decided to take her with him. After a lifetime of abandonment, she has someone. So she doesn't care about that fight. She cares that he is giving her a choice, he is choosing her. so she simply accepts his offer, and moving forward.

He changes his mind because he realizes hurting Ellie would be worse than the fear of losing her. And probably realizes how much she means now. So he lets her choose for the first time what she wants.

Hi Cassie, another great episode. Joel reuniting with Tommy was emotional as was their separation. Pedro Pascual''s acting is I in my opinion elite, his emotional revelation to Tommy about his fears is worth an emmy award. Bella Ramsey is also doing very well as Ellie, can'tvwait for next episode. ✌

A series with no weak episodes. The first video game adaptation that can actually be described as fantastic. All others have not even earned the title good. Seeing Henry at the beginning was not a dream. He doesn't remember his dreams. And when he thinks of something, you see it from the first-person perspective as when he was thinking of Sarah. Showing Henry at the beginning was actually exactly how it looked in the game and not like the previous episode. In the game there was the shot, then a black screen and then the time jump to the dam. As far as I know, Divacup was launched in 2003. I would say lucky. When Joel had his first panic attack, Ellie can't say anything nice because she panicked because of it too. Remember her greatest fear is to ending up alone. The dog here has noticed that something is wrong with Ellie, but he has also noticed that there is no danger from her. Something Fedra's detectors can't detect. They only know black (red) and white (green), just like Fedra is. And of course, Ellie is infected, otherwise the detector would not have shown red. Immunity does not mean that you are not infected, that you do not carry the fungus. Imagine how many immunes have been killed by detectors. The boy in episode 1 could have been immune. A combination of Dedektor and dog would probably be ideal. Because of Joel's injury. I think that's done far more realistically here than in the game. You need extreme self-control to leave something stuck in your body that you do not want to have there and does not belong there. The head must remain clear and you must be aware of what is happening to you. Among other things, you first have to be aware that you are in a state of shock. And even if the stick got stuck, I hardly think he wouldn't even have been able to get on the horse, nor would he have been able to ride. Maria to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust." Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series. Maria knows people and she is no bullshit. Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon." This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. But he does not see this so clearly at the time and still tries to prevent the inevitable. Joel just wanted to talk to the family at the dinner table. This excluded Maria, but Ellie was allowed to remain seated. Subconsciously, Ellie was already part of his family. Ellie drank from Joel's liquor and it was "STILL gross". That was a callback to the DLC "Left Behind" Elli's flashback episode. Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will properly get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback. This episode was a feast for everyone who played Part 2. we met Dina (Ellie yelled at her as she dined), properly Jessie (cinema), Shimmer, Bison Bar, sheeps, kids playing snowball, Astronauts, Jackson see from the inside. Simply fantastic. The campfire scene was not in the game, but was originally supposed to be included. So far, only a concept art was left in the bonus material of the game. I think the scene would have been important in the game because it underlines once again that both Marlene and Joel are absolutly sure that it is possible to produce a cure. Druckman said he can now finally show more through the series than was possible in the game. Tommy didn't do anything wrong. He has simply decided not to endanger 300 people, including children. And he stayed in this community because, after the Army, Joel and the Fireflys, he can actually do something good here than always killing people, innocent people too. He searched for this all his life and was disappointed again and again. He was always a hero or wanted to be one, as Joel himself said. This was already the case in the first episode. Joel didn't have to get him out of jail because he built shit, but because he helped a woman who was attacked. That is Tommy. Joel isn't really THE main character because it's Ellie's journey and before that it was Sarah's journey. When Sarah died, Ellie took over. Joel only accompanies her in principle. It's Ellie's story. He is her support actor. That's why we only see the killings of Joel when Ellie sees them. Otherwise, the cut comes just before the kill and the camera shows Ellie's reaction. She and we then only hear the kill.

One note, she wasn't saying that she wasn't his daughter, rather she was saying that she wasn't sarah specifically. Joel kind of twisted it on her in saying she was right, she isn't his daughter, and you can see that she's pained by this because she felt like she was.

I remember way back in the 70's, seeing a Firebird painted that same shade of orange. Maaan, I wanted that, SOOO bad! 😋 There was a FUN car chase movie back then called "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry". That one had a beautiful, yellow '69 Dodge Charger. Just before that movie came out, my sister burst into the house and yelled, "Come see the new car dad bought!" I ran outside to see a beautiful, brand new, yellow Charger parked in the driveway.🤯 I shouted, "IS THAT REALLY OURS!"🤪 She said, "No, we're just test driving it."😖 I felt like Charlie Brown, after Lucy pulled the football away.🤬 My dad got a Mercury Montego station wagon instead.😭

Joel's decision is a lot more subtle in the game, with him riding behind Ellie & Tommy towards Jackson, just looking at her with a sad face. But you don't really know what his thoughts are, which I think is a bit more obvious with Sarah's scene in the show, which I think also is a parallel to Part 2 and two very similar scenes that imply healing of nightmare plagued individuals.

I mean, it’s totally doable. With 7 being Left Behind, 8 being Winter, and 9 being SLC, it should fit pretty well into 3 episodes. Obviously they’ll be moving stuff around and changing some stuff again, but without needing the gameplay, that all should fit pretty realistically.

Rumor is that when the show was pitched to HBO it was supposed to be 10 episodes but after hearing the pitch HBO said they wanted the 1st and 2nd episodes to be combined because the first episode was entirely Pre-pandemic, that's why what we got was so long while the rest have been around the same length. I think everything will be fine.

Unless, of course, you can't stabilize the object and yourself. For example, escaping on horseback with a broken baseball bat in your abdomen would do much more damage, and you would likely die faster. But, yes, in most cases it's better to leave the object in place.

I think it was established that Maria didn't want Tommy talking on the radio. There's a few moments here where Maria isn't trusting of Joel and his reputation. Not being on the radio is a safety thing for the commune but I think they made it known that Maria has trust issues when it comes to Tommy and Joel. Ironically trying to avoid just this, Tommy inviting Joel over and getting back to their old ways.

Ellie was taken in by Marlene years before she was proven to be immune, and you didn't need to play the game to know this so it's not a spoiler. Marlene told Ellie that she is the one who put her in the FEDRA orphanage/military school which means that she was with her when she was a baby or toddler at most, before Ellie could form any kind of memory of her. She knows that her real name is Ellie, not Veronica the name her Firefly captors think she goes by. Marlene also mentions Riley, someone obviously important to Ellie and only someone familiar with Ellie's life would know. We also know that her immunity was not known before this. You don't know you're immune unless you are bitten and somehow no one else kills you before enough time goes by to show that you haven't turned. The Fireflies have had her chained up for 3 weeks, testing her to see if she will turn meaning that they didn't have prior knowledge of her immunity. The question remains though, why wasn't she killed by someone when she was first bitten, why bother to test her if you had no idea that she was potentially immune and if you did have such an idea, how did you get it? Also, who is Riley and why does the mention of her name make Ellie react like Joel does if you bring up Sarah or Tess? Who did Ellie shoot before the kid in KC and why doesn't she want to talk about it, even with Joel? Why does Marlene know so much about Ellie's past and how did she come to have the power to put her in the FEDRA school? What happened to Elli's parents? I believe that episode 7 is going to answer all these questions.

The game does do a time jump but I don't think it's quite to winter like it is in the show. The next episode if they don't do a flashback episode(Not watched any previews) is winter. As for the injury at the end. You are supposed to keep it in and immobilise it. It couldn't be immobilised at that point and if he rode with it in it would of ripped his insides up. No animals can't be infected in the story otherwise all animal life on the planet would be gone and long before 20 years all the people would be gone. Imagine if insects and rats carried the fungus with a mission to spread the infection. If it was real life however they would be able to get infected.

In the game it's Pittsburgh, not Kansas City, but there's a time jump like that for when they reach Wyoming as well. The main difference is that the show is slightly ahead in regards to seasons. In the game full winter only arrives after Joel gets impaled, which is also much worse in the game, as he gets tackled by one of the bandits in the upper floor and then falls down to the bottom floor, landing straight onto a piece of rebar sticking out of some rubble. I think with how you like to look at the psychological details of what the characters do or don't do, whether correct about it or not, you're the type of person who will definitely "enjoy" Part 2 / season 2 & possibly 3. You should also re-watch this episode specifically once you've seen the contents of Part 2, because there's a lot of references and foreshadowing in this, which none of you fresh viewers will be able to get or fully appreciate. Joel is obviously fighting his PTSD, which flares up because he can't help but let his guard down and get attached to Ellie, which he fears to lose like he lost Sarah, which he blames himself for and is reliving that moment every single time he gets to sleep. I believe they draw a parallel here to Part 2, which I can't go into detail because of spoilers, but think about how he was only able to see Sarah in that last nightmarish moment for 20 years, but after talking it out with Tommy and sort of with Ellie he suddenly was able to remember Sarah in a happy moment, which made him unsure about his decision to run away from Ellie and his feelings, essentially tackling his PTSD. Again, that's just one of my theories and will mean nothing to you until you know Part 2 but there's not just one but two examples there that follow that same scheme, which would fit in nicely with all the other Part 2 stuff in this episode. I think Tommy breaking contact was a matter of Maria being too protective, especially after learning about Joel from Tommy. But yeah, it's bullshit to shove the entire blame on him, including about what Tommy did. Tommy is a grown adult and war veteran, not some little puppy that blindly follows his owner. The monkeys in the game are infected, but only passive carriers from the vaccine experiments of the Fireflies. They are not a threat however, but you find the last remaining Firefly corpse and that persons audio logs. He basically released them after they moved but got bitten and ended up shooting himself. In the end they both need each other. The next episode, "Left Behind", will answer some of your questions, but also surprise you. :)

Ellie choosing to go w Joel is not about not being a capricious teenage girl. It's so much deeper than that nonsense. Joel is the only person she has. And she knows he cares about her. She is mature enough to force the issue of their unacknowledged bond by asking "do you give a shit about me or not." While Joel was fleeing his feelings, Ellie bravely confronted hers AND his. (And Joel immediate reaction was to... flee, again). When Tommy came to pick her up, Ellie was *clearly* hoping it would be Joe, and the silent disappointment on her face was heartbreaking (Bella is truly brilliant). When Joel said she had a choice, Ellie was *relieved*. She was not gonna be abandoned by the one person who cares about her in this world after all. There is no room for teenage crap with matters this deep and serious.

I think what made Joel "suddenly" change his mind about taking Ellie was just that he was able to have that conversation with Tommy. He opened up, he cried... it didn't solve anything but it is kind of a relief. After that maybe he had time to think about it... he made a promise to Tess, Tommy is going to be a father (maybe it's not fair to put him in danger), and ultimately: he is attached to Ellie and still feels HE must protect her.
@weirdversions

Oh, and about Ellie as not a regular teenager, I agree. But in the game she actually did run off when she realized Joel was going to leave her. Joel had to go after her, and finds her at a random house where they end up having that argument we saw in the episode.

I was hoping this episode would fix the issues I had with this arc in the game, and in a way it did but not perfectly. In the game Ellie actually runs away when Joel tries to hand her off to Tommy and Joel goes to find her. They have a run in with raiders and when he finds Ellie they have that awful fight where he says those mean things, you escape the building, and then suddenly Joel changes his mind? and Ellie is cool with it? I liked that they moved the fight in the show to a place that makes more sense to have it, but I think Ellie running away after the fight, Joel and Tommy going after her, getting her back safely, then Joel apologizing and deciding to keep going with Ellie if she'll have him (the scare of her running off like that will show him just how much he too is scared to be separated from her just like she is, while him actively chasing after her will prove he cares for her and help Ellie forgive what he said so she'll keep going with him) is what I really think makes the most sense. Ellie just staying in that room in the show and going along with Tommy seems so passive of the Ellie we've come to know so far lol.
