Hey everyone! When I wrote the review, the TV was on sale for $700. It is, as I write THIS, $800. Adjust the calculus accordingly. Aside from that, what are your thoughts?

Just to let everyone know, the 75” U8K version of the Hisense TVs uses the ADS Pro panels that are not like the older generation IPS panels. ADS or Advanced Plane-to-Line Switching: The infrastructure of the ADS panel is the same as PLS or Plane-to-Line Switching. In this, the liquid crystals lie along the same plane always, like IPS displays. ADS is different from IPS because it uses a longitudinal electric field and a transverse electric field for parallel liquid crystal movement.

Echoing my comment below, I paid $999 for the 75" and as a "casual enthusiast" who watches mostly HDR/Dolby Vision content and games I have very little issues with the set. Your complaints are accurate but true AV enthusiasts are already likely locked on to an OLED or a miniLED.

Well as a 70 year old who will be upgrading from an almost 10 year old Vizio 1080p TV, this sounds like what I need. I mean, my eyes aren't what they were and the upgrade will be so significant that by comparison this will seem great. Thanks for the review.

This will blow that old Vizio 1080p TV away. You'll see colors and contrast you never saw on a tv before. Get it while you can still enjoy it! I'm 71 myself and appreciate your situation. My previous HD TV was a Vizio 1080p also. I've got a 2019 TCL 55 inch 4K 6 series still going strong. Hope to move up to a QM8 next year if my vision holds out.

For the price and the overall incredible value this TV provides, I can live with the flaws. I would say I'm somewhere in between the average consumer and a tech nerd. I'm willing to compromise if I can get most of the features I need from the QM8 series baked into the Q7. For under $1000 for the 75 inch Q7 you're getting more features and performance than the comparable older 6 series 75 inch that used to be between $1300 - $1500. Those flaws that you are pointing out is TCL trying to really aggressively lower the cost of the product so they can have something to attack the market with. I can live with the flaws. So I'm going to target the Q7 for a November Black Friday purchase.

I originally purchased the Samsung Q60 since it was on sale for Black Friday. My Hisense QLED from a few years ago developed some sick screen burn. My hope was to get an upgrade or at least equal value to that TV. After a week with the Samsung and doing more research, including reviews like this one, I returned it for the TCL. I was worried since I figured Samsung is the best, and perhaps they are in some areas. I am so glad I got this TV so far. After some calibration, the picture is amazing! For the value, it’s an excellent choice and I would recommend it for sure. I certainly like the picture more than the Samsung. Features are easy to use and the remote has a backlight which is pretty dope. Don’t sleep on this one!

Caleb, I have a question. I just purchased my 75-in Q7 TCL and when I watch things in Dolby Vision or HDR they looked washed out. Keep in mind I am streaming this content. However, when I disable HDR and Dolby Vision on my Roku 4K and just watch it in 4K, the TV looks excellent. It's bright. It's vibrant. It has deep. Blacks is very beautiful TV. However, when I enable HDR and w vision it puts a gray haze over the screen like the blacks are very lifted. Can you help me with this?

I wish TCL would move up into the OLED Platform. They might be able to give LG, Sony, and Samsung a run for "The Money". I am not sure how much better they can make Mini-LED Technology. I bought this TV a couple months ago on sale for like 650 after tax. Out-of-the-box is terrible. I can't even hire a calibrator here. So, coming from an LG C9, I'm pretty disappointed. The Rtings settings for the white points seem to help a lot. Most users would rather have vibrant colors so they won't care, but this TV is capable and after calibration, it could be fantastic. Honestly, not super disappointed because price was good in comparison, but without substantial calibration equipment and several hours of work, it does a decent job. Someone really needs to put pressure on companies to have a standard calibration at the factory. They leave so much on the table by not doing it. The technology in this price range is at the point where anyone could have a great TV and experience amazing performance, but the average consumer won't calibrate this TV and that's where this TV fails for me. I'll still keep it because I needed a cheap large TV, but disappointed in how much potential it has that I, personally, am unable to unlock. Great review and thanks for your honesty. Maybe TCL will adopt new factory calibrations in the future.

Thanks for the really honest review, Caleb. I bought a 55" Q7 a couple of months ago (replacing a 7-year-old TCL P605) and I'm happy with it overall for the price I paid. Despite working in post-production, I'm thankfully not a nit nerd in my spare time, but I still appreciate a decent picture and I do think the Q7 is good value for a mid-range budget TV. Contrast, as you said, is very impressive for a FALD set, and its gaming features are a nice bonus. However, If I had space for a 65" in my living room, I probably would have gone for a QM8. To be honest though, most of the issues I have with the Q7 center around the vagueness of some of the menu settings for picture control in terms of what they do - which I'm guessing is going to be mirrored on the QM8 as they share the same image processor, as well as Google TV OS. I'm also disappointed in Dolby Vision IQ mode forcing motion smoothing to be on, a shame as it actually does a pretty good job of enhancing darker areas of picture in some House Of The Dragon-type scenarios.
@Caleb_Denison
@Caleb_Denison Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the awesome feedback. I am also frustrated by motion smoothing being on by default in IQ. You can turn it off I believe. But I’m starting to hear that some Q7’s out there aren’t holding on to user settings, which is worriesome. Give it a try, though. It might stick!
@ModeMan101
@ModeMan101 Жыл бұрын
@@Caleb_Denison Cheers for the reply, Caleb! Sadly, as far as I know you can only turn off the motion smoothing in the Dolby Bright/Dark modes, not IQ. The option just isn't there when you bring up the picture settings under IQ. Whether that's by TCL's design or Dolby's insistence, I have no idea. It could even be a combination of the two - I'm not sure what other manufacturers are offering a Dolby IQ mode? Dolby sees it as an "auto" mode , which could be why they think the average consumer would prefer (or not care about) motion smoothing being on. Any idea if the QM8 is the same way?

I don't understand this, if you're satisfied with your TV, and that is to say really 'satisfied', what do you care about the numbers wrt calibration, gamma, white balance, shadow details, nits, colour accuracy, hdr and what not. TV is good if it leaves you with the pleasure of watching everytime you watch it and gets you to value it for ever to a point you seriously commit to it as something you could never part with.

@@Brisingr73 In theory yes, the good metrics together ought to make good picture quality technically speaking, but we're forgetting a awfully lot of other factors, like human perception of what is 'looking good' to your eye. And secondly, the type of content you're watching. like landscape vs portraits, the oriental paintings are good example where there is deliberate lack of contrast, they look washed out and that's the norm of being perfect. First one did the same thing about 2 months in, used the warranty and this one that just did the same exact thing after 2 1/2 or so years did the same exact thing. Pretty disappointed I wouldn’t think it would be anything to do with Roku since that’s just the smart tv software stuff on the Hisense tv but I don’t ever plan on getting another Hisense after this. I purchased a 55” TCL Q7 a few days ago and so far so good. Picture quality is decent although color accuracy out of the box is mediocre like Caleb mentions in his review. I have calibration settings below per another reviewer on KZbin. As of now the picture looks better after these picture settings are implemented. I do have a few other gripes so far like watching 4K UHD movies on my Sony UHD player not looking great when using Dolby Vision. I use HDR 10 instead and prefer it right now when watching my UHD discs. Also my soundbar doesn’t turn off when powering off the TV and sometimes doesn’t turn on when powering up the TV. Also not a fan of the motion on this TV for movies but I’ve noticed that most newer TVs have the same issue with motion handling by stuttering on pan camera shots. I just messed with the motion settings and changed it to Blur Reduction: 1 and Judder Reduction: 3. I might lower the Judder to 2 bc I hate the Soap Opera effect and sometimes the 3 Judder setting might be too smooth for motion handling. Some things that I really like about this TV is its remote. Buttons light up when you pick up the remote so no more fumbling with the remote in the dark. Little things like this go a long way. Also another plus is that the HDMI (E)ARC input is a HDMI 2.0 input so you truly get 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs (Inputs 1 & 2) for 120hz gaming. Unlike my Sony OLED that annoyingly takes up the HDMI 2.1 input as also being an (E)ARC input. Another great perk is having actual storage capacity like 24GB compared to some of these TVs only giving you like 5GB (which is ridiculous). And last thing is it’s a Google operating TV which I love. I highly recommend TVs that utilize Google because you get more app control settings like Force Stop for example. Plus its user interface is clean and simple or at least it is in my opinion.. Overall I’m happy with this TV especially for the sale price of $448 (as of today at Best Buy). Below are the calibration settings I mentioned earlier. Calibration settings are not universal and don’t work the same for each TV (so every user will probably have to make some more fine tunings to get their preferred picture) but I’m more happy with the color accuracy now. Also I’m not experiencing the picture settings issue with them resetting like some users have stated but it’s only been about 5 days so we’ll see.. Calibration settings for “Movie” 2 points: R Gain -2 G gain 0 B gain -16 R off set -2 G off set -2 B off set -3 20 points: Interval 4 Red -3 Green 1 Blue -4

So, first very informative and useful review. My question though is, I'm a faithful TCL buyer, love their products, is this TV a replacement in their line up for the 5 series line? Currently own a 50 inch qled 5 series

The only issue I have with my 55" is that both PS5 Slim & Series X suffer from Inverse Ghosting with VRR enabled. Really a bummer because the TV is exceptional otherwise.

I don't see this TV going down in price for Black Friday way too new and it's priced as low as it could get original price $1399 and its 999 at sale price now try and get an open box from Best buy if looking to save money I own this TV an disagree with his review on this one this TV performs very well you can get almost black bars from putting on smart hdr mode changing gamma to 2.4 micro dimming to high local contrast to high make sure to have brightness to at least 50 or higher these setting will lower it so id suggest brightness at 50 or higher out of box color for me was great you just don't know what you'll get from tcl last years r655 was a piece of crap local dimming sucked and the q7 having no mini led performs better every day of the week

TLC is such an underrated brand. Bought a LG C3, returned it 2 days later because surprisingly I like my 500 dollar TLC 4K better. I'm not even kidding lol. Like the video mentioned, their contrast control is amazing, which is the thing i hate about oled.

the TCL QM8.......That's still only available in the UK?!?!? 😂😂😂 I STILL WISH I could just get a 65" SUPER GOOD 4-8k, mini LED display WITHOUT SPEAKERS AND A SMART HUB.....I have an Xbox Series X and a Pioneer AVR & Pinoeer and JVC 5.1 surround sound. I have thought of getting a Short throw Laser projector BUT I'd have to mount it UPSIDE DOWN ON THE CEILING!!!! 😂😂😂 So it sounds like I can get the sweet display without the $$$ in the Q7 and just disable the smart feature and speakers. THANKS CALEB!!!!!!!

Went from a 7 series Samsung 82 inch tv that lasted just over 2 years and now a anchor for a boat after LCD went .. to this 85 inch 2023 model TCL tv QLED and no comparison.. TCL this far blows Samsung out of the water for clear audible sound .. amazing without the need of a soundbar . Picture has bright colours . Very impressed after 24 hrs lol I’ll write another review after months .. I did learn my lesson and bought a 4 year waranty to at least get my money back if unrepairable but by then I’ll trade up to a 98 inch to 100 inch for same price lol

I'm currently using a 55" 4K 60Hz Samsung from 2016 (purchased in April 2017). I want a 4K QLED running at 120Hz with built-in Bluetooth. The cheapest Samsung with those specs at 55" is about $1300 CAD (QN55Q80CAFXZC) while TLC has a model at $750 CAD (55Q750G-CA). Question is, at such a high price difference, what am I compromising by going with TLC? Is this a brand that only last a couple of years before showing problems? Cheers

I am looking for a budget tv around 50-55" to connect to my PC to run some exercise games on like Zwift. Any recommendations? I was looking at this tv because it was $500 in 55" and 120hz but let me know what you think a good option would be. I was even looking at the cheaper Q5 in 50" as its only $250 and 4k 60hz should be good. Thanks.

I bought a new Q 7 and returned it. It had great contrast and blooming control but I couldn’t get over the poor upscaling. Nothing under 4k looked clear. Ended up getting the Hisense U8k and love it! Way better upscaling. Way better everything really. Just don’t use it in a room where you’d need a wide viewing angle. Actually bought a Samsung Q 80c and returned that too before I got the U8k. The Q80c is junk. Lots of blooming, poor contrast, average upscaling. That basically performed like a budget tv.
