If you keep track of your number of units with extra turn markers and update the max size as battles are won it removes the necessity to count your cities and units every round.

I also have the first edition, which was lauded as the best $10 game on the market in 1981. I scanned my map and put it on PowerPoint. I like the later game pieces, but use the original counters for the reduced strength. Having Excel find a random number 1..6 is easier than rolling a die. Each slide in the presentation is a player turn, so I can look at it in review.

This is the Civil War game to come back to again and again. It is a very clean and simple system. As such, this is the perfect strategic game for making your own little alterations; the system can easily be modified to add a little more historicity here and there. For example, we have a house rule that when the Union die roll for marches is a "three," both players will get one extra bonus march that turn, provided it is used in the Trans-Mississippi theater. The war there was almost a separate struggle. Other changes we are using include a limit on cavalry units for both sides (one unit in 1861, two units in 1862, and so on) and rules that cavalry traveling without infantry cannot enter an enemy-controlled recruiting city with a recruitment value higher than one. (Some will say that these changes take away some of their favorite plans, but you know in your heart that my way is more historical). I also recommend allowing one Union infantry unit per turn to travel an unlimited number of spaces by river movement via Union-controlled spaces, not just two spaces--as a simulation of Union river strength. There are other changes I am experimenting with as well. The system allows it; it never feels overloaded.

I still have my first edition House Divided from GDW. This is a great game and has a great deal of depth for the relative simplicity of the rules. Buy it and play it.

Thinking to pull a trigger on this one, 2nd hand offer for cheap. How does it hold up from todays perspective? And are ALL the components language independent?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer3 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I played it, but I think it's pretty language neutral. There are of course names of cities, but from what I remember there is hardly any text. Last time I played it was a few years ago, but I'd like to hit it again sometime soon.

Hello, The Discriminating Gamer Do you still have this game? I have the same version and it recently got soaked in storage Ive been scouring the internet to try and find a printable version of both the Union and Confederate display sheets as well as the basic rules summary booklet. If you still have these would you be willing to scan them and email them to me? Be happy to flick you some money for the trouble

I do have it but it is currently buried in storage. Have you tried BGG? I'm sure if you put something up on a discussion forum you could find someone who could help.
