This game is criminally underrated. Much richer than lots of these new area control games/war games. Heroes are key to the game -> they can pull off 2 runes for you and the quests are pretty cool. The units are so diverse and the tactics you conjure with the right combinations of them are endless. So many unique and original ideas in this game. I think the key to this game is that the gamers have changed in a sense that long, beefy games are underapreciated these days. Heck... i bet you if TI3 came out today, people would be putting it down saying its not streamlined enough.

I actually love long, beefy games. They are my bread and butter. This one didn't click for me, though. It's not a bad game, it just is not a great game. Agree to disagree.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer pardon my inference if incorrect, it almost felt like you really really wanted to like this game and it disheartened you as it didn't live upto the expectations you had of it. I too am on the fence about whether I should get this game or not and I almost could feel your frustration. I have bought many games from your recommendation and thus I think I will pass.

@@showmicr You are entirely correct. This is a game that I thought looked awesome. I remember seeing the previous edition in stores years ago and nearly buying it, then I was really upset when it went out of print. I was sure to get a copy when this edition came out, though it was a few years before I got it to the table. I had kind expected it to be a fantasy Twilight Imperium, but it was nothing like that. What is more, I just felt some of the mechanics were a little too odd- they just didn't seem to work like a well oiled machine. It was a very disappointing experience for me on a lot of levels. There are so many other great games out there, I think you're wise to give this one a pass. If you can find it, Conquest of Nerath is a much better fantasy war game. Or War Party from Lock 'N Load.

I think it's a bit of stretch to call this a wargame. More of a light wargame/adventure game. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but as made clear in the video it kind of fell flat for me.

Glad you got to this one before the move. Runewars was my favorite game back when I first got into modern board games. Blew me away. I'd never seen anything like it before. It's still a nostalgic favorite of mine but I can see the problems others have with the game. I think it comes down to that deck of cards being used to determine everything. There is no decision point with that and doesn't feel as exciting as rolling dice. Perhaps if they let you have a hand of the cards that would have helped. You could hold a good card for the right situation. Win a combat by playing the right card at the right time. Maybe that would give the game the stand up win or lose situation so many seem to wish this game had.

The only comments hit the nail on the head- it hasn't aged well. Good game, just not a great game- especially in light of so many others that successfully accomplish what this tries to.

I have the game and have played it many times. I have played games where the heroes helped in winning and where they seemed a waste of time. I do have the expansion which added some more troop types and more season cards which I felt made the game much more fun. I do wish they would have added orcs and dwarves so it's not always the same four factions.

Yeah, this is from an era of overproduced and clunky Ameritrash FFG games that just haven't aged well. Corey K has a lot of crap under his belt... I probably could've worded that better.
