If you are training the dog to engage and be attentive to you in a quiet area, when i need to take the dog out, where there are naturally more distractions, how do i not ruin all the training thats been done when he pulls?
@mobstercrow75154 ай бұрын
Start in quiet areas then slowly start training in more distracting areas. Dogs need to learn in many different environments. Don't get angry if your dog doesn't listen to you in a new environment, just give them some time to get used to everything, then start with the basics again.

I think this is going to work really well for my pomeranian. Funnily enough I brought a long line yesterday to let her run around at the park a little more as I just cant keep up with her on her very short training leash, and she was much much more well behaved than I thought she would be. She wasn't pulling at all, and came back to me every time I asked. Even ignored other dogs.

1st time visitor to your site. Looks terrific. But what kind of treats do you use? Concerns about weight gain with so many treats?
@susannekalejaiye43514 ай бұрын
Probably from his next meal - at least that's what she frequently mentions in other videos.

Thank you. Great tip.

Treats should only be 10% of your dogs diet. A treat should be the size of a pea, I usually break them up into the size of half of a pea though. I use a mixture of my dogs regular food, some broken up pieces of freeze dried salmon food toppers, and air dried cod chips.

We pull out half the kibble from each meal and use it for training. No extra treats needed so far.

I love your videos, but using such easy, smart, food motivated puppies- the goldens, the labs, gives an unrealistic expectation for the owners of those non-food motivated, more independent breeds that drive people to look for help. Like working with the guardian breeds, many of the terriers, some of the sporting breeds that are notoriously bad off lead- cavalieres, beagles, etc. It would be helpful to add some videos that would show what has to happen when working with the more challenging breeds. First time dog owners do not always do their homework and come home with dogs that should not be their first time dogs. Some useful training tips for these owners may help keep good dogs, with bad/no training out of the rehoming shelters. Just a thought.

yeahh, when i started training my 11year old staffy i wondered why she wasn’t learning as fast as all the border collies and goldens that i was seeing lol. ive learnt to hold more realistic expectations for her breed and experience/age, but it took a while

I'd also like to see more older dog training videos as there are so many puppy ones (I know a lot of the training can be transferred, but example my 2 year old golden (who ive had from 9 weeks) is far too strong to work with on a long line but his recall still isn't great

I think Instead of food you would try one dedicated toy to play when they do great. Basically replacing food with a toy and important to keep being consistent and determined for success

I've been watching some of your videos and I notice that what I've seen is with large puppies. I just got a pug puppy and he's only 8 lbs. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction of some of your videos with little puppies. Also, my 8 year old shih tzu/bichon mix is NOT getting along with the new puppy. Do you have any videos on that? Thank you so much!

My 7 mo puppy is good on the leash up until he hears something loud like a car or truck. He gets terrified. How can i help him get over his fear and anxiety outside?

At this point with a zillion treats, he’ll be huge . I gave my baby one small treat , every time she obeyed. ONE SMALL TREAT . SHE HAS PERFECT MANNERS , and she can bring different items to us from different rooms . She is awesome. Gets the morning paper, brings my husband his reading glasses to him , now she gets fab treats , chicken liver …….lol

My guess is that she’s already broken up the treats in tiny pieces, or using a portion of Stephen’s daily allowance of food. There are ways to use food rewards without making a dog gain a lot of weight.
