I had a neighbor that was pacing outside, he approached me, and said he had not slept in days and could not calm down, I checked his pulse, he had tachycardia, told him to go to the ER immediately, he did not want to because he done coke, but finally did, they told him that if he had waited any longer he would have died from a heart attack...maybe the combination of the cocaine and tasers did it.

Yeah if your on coke you can have a heart attack and police know that they knew he was on a substance or heavily thought he was an a lot of substances don’t go well with a taser and not knowing that persons actual health status it’s dangerous to deploy a taser on someone so deployed that many times is really negligent

@@sadiyasaleh233From your response it doesn't seem like you've given any thought to why law enforcement officers carry tasers. 99 times out of a 100 getting compliance out of someone using physical violence will cause the person far more permanent damage then less than lethal. A couple of 200 pound police officers tackling a suspect on concrete is a good way to guarantee permanent injury. If you don't like what you see stop giving the government the responsibility of protecting you.

I’ve worked in an ER for many years. The general public has no idea how hard it can be to restrain someone who’s high on drugs. One time we had a patient come in high as can be and it took over 8 full grown men just to get restraints on him. I’m not defending the police but believe me when I say you have no idea how strong someone can be when they’re on drugs.

Exited delirium is a made up syndrome that has not scientific basis and is not contained in the Diagnosis and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorder. The failur here was failing to recognize the mental health crisis, drug induced or not and change their tactics to address his paranoid state. People in crisis don't respond well to commands or pain compliance and that made the use of the taser unnecessary and counter intuitive in this situation. They had him on the ground and at that point needed to slow down.

I had a friend, a lawyer, who got into cocaine and it made him extremely paranoid, he decided his neighbor across the street with whom he’d had a friendly relationship was trying to kill him so he’d stay up all night staring out the window so the neighbor couldn’t ‘sneak up on him.’ After a minor traffic stop, he drove away before the police officer could give him a ticket, and ran over her foot. They threw the book at him, he got a jail term and hefty fine. So sad to destroy your life for a recreational drug.

One thing to remember when you hear stories of 4 or 5 cops on one perp, is that the cops are working within the bounds of their own training and rules. Their training is not to restrain them at all cost, but to do so without hurting them if possible. I could restrain a 100 lb woman on drugs by myself, I'd just have to let her snap a few of her limbs in the process. Obviously I wouldn't want to do that as a cop, so I might need help.

They had defensive training. My sister mentioned that they used the high/low technique. Her partner took the offender's upper body, and my sister took the lower body. Their goal was to handcuff the woman, but each time they tried, the offender struggled her hands away. Paula told me, "we never cuff one wrist first without having the other wrist available to cuff, too." She said one cuffed wrist gives the offender a weapon. Paula suffered severely bruised ribs from being kicked. Her partner is 6' and weighs 240 lb. She had bites to her arms and hands and facial bruising from being head butted.

It was calm, yes. But not neutral. When a man dies shortly after being tased 6 times by overaggressive police in less time than it takes to make microwaved popcorn...and a person asks "was it the tasing or something else that killed him? maybe drugs?"..it is quite clear which side of the fence he stands on. When police attack someone and they die you don't get to sit there and speculate if something else like drugs is actually what caused his death and remain "neutral" at the same time. Okay.. but if it is clearly a mental health issue like this was, someone trained to deal with mental health should additionally be deployed. He didn't appear to have violent tendencies, and could likely have been dealt with more effectively... the guy looked terrified. Also, if stimulants are potentially a factor, tasers should be off the table period. use pepper spray or kinetic rounds instead. Drugs are a huge problem in this country, and even under the influence 99% of users wont resort to deadly violence. Its pretty disingenuous to point to a tragic, but also fringe case and infer we should 'go easy on them', ya know? Cops are already given a shit ton of power and protection, we need to scrutinize every move they make. Everyone should push for more effective means to protect and serve.

In Finland new police officers are trained for 5500 hours. In the USA new police are trained for 600 hours. In Finland you require a university degree to be a cop. In the USA you only need grade 12. US police academies spend far more time on firearms training than on de-escalating a situation - 71 hours against 21, on average, according to a 2013 US Bureau of Justice Statistics report. Most of the training in the US is focused on various types of use of force, primarily the various types of physical force. The communication skills are largely ignored by most police academies. This is why you see officers very rapidly escalating from initial communication to the actual physical use of force, because this is how they train.

First of all, Dr. Grande merely renders his opinion as a mental health provider, not a lawyer. Second of all, did you hear the part where Dr. Grande said something like, in spite of recognizing that this guy was probably experiencing drug-induced (or mentally-induced) paranoia, the police acted as though he had the ability to follow instructions? They seemed to have no understanding of what was going on with this guy in a way that could lead them to being more patient/careful with the restraining process. Instead, they treated him almost like he was being violent and attacking them, which it doesn't look like he was doing. I don't think anyone expects the police to offer therapy sessions; that's just being dramatic. It does seem as though a better result could have occurred if the police had focused on getting him in handcuffs somehow. We'll never know.

I'm all for placing responsibility where it lies, no matter who that's with. This time I can't really fault the police. He also seemed fine when he was taken away. Electricity is frequently used to start and stop hearts, it's always instant effect. You don't shock a dead person and expect them to wake up 4 hours later, similarly, I find it hard to find a physical correlation to being tased (even excessively) and then having the effect of that happen 4 hours later. I'm not a doctor, but my education and experience tells me this is incredibly unlikely. I'm sure that he took a lot of cocaine, judging by his behavior, and that seems a far more likely reason for cardiac arrest. I'm sorry for the family, but this one's on the victim at least 90%. Thanks for the thoughtful and calm analysis Dr Grande!

Good morning, Dr. Grande! Keenan was clearly on something, but not so high as to make reference to George Floyd. Fortunately, the police had it on tape. But 6 taser applications in less than a minute seems excessive but, as you pointed out, there has been no actual cause of death listed yet. As for his family suing the city for $50 million, that's a common enough occurrence when someone dies while in police custody. In Rochester, New York a similar incident occurred in 2020 involving Daniel Prude. After his death, his family sued the city and settled for $12 million AFTER the police had been found not guilty of any wrongdoing. The lawyers got one third of that. But Keenan's claim that someone was out to kill him became a self-fulfilling prophesy.
@retriever19golden55
@retriever19golden55 Жыл бұрын
Daniel Prude's death was also unnecessary. The Rochester police force needs retraining and revamping. In another case an eight-year-old girl was frantic because her parents were apparently fighting...I think her mom called the cops, I'm not sure. The first officer there was trying to calm her down but mom came out and started shouting and swearing at her. It set her off again, and when two other officers showed up, everything escalated. Her mom was screaming at her, and three officers shouting commands and threatening to take her to the police station or use tear gas...they tossed her into the back of the patrol car and gassed her. Eight years old.

It's a bit misleading to say the police "used a Taser" on Keenan six times. On the initial attempt, the prongs didn't make a good connection, so the instant and complete debilitation effect of the Taser wasn't available. What the officer did after that is called "drive stunning," where electrodes on the Taser itself are applied to a person's body. This causes pain and local muscle spasms, but isn't debilitating. Given Keenan's mental state, that obviously wasn't going to help, but did it kill him four and a half hours later? That seems highly unlikely. I do think the officer with the Taser should receive additional training and possibly discipline, but I would say the lawsuit is entirely meritless.

At one time I wondered the percentage of deaths the medical cause of which was never determined by an autopsy. I figured the coroners would have some statistics which went into a national data base. I could never find one, but I stumbled over an interesting article about categories of people who suffer deaths the cause of which couldn't be determined. A large number of these were those who had used illegal drugs which weren't on them at the time of their death. This guy died four hours after the incident. There are apparently chemical pathways buried in human processes which aren't easily identified and are compromised/altered by drug use and maybe even the substances with which these drugs are cut which cause death but are difficult to detect or are unknown by medicine.

It's also worth considering: when did he take the drugs, and how long does it take for the body to absorb and begin feeling the effects of the drug, as well as how long does it take for the drug to lose effect? There is no drug that takes IMMEDIATE effect; the body has to absorb it first; this can take minutes to hours to reach full effect, depending on the drug. Caffeine, for example, doesn't reach full effect until 45 minutes after consumption, and takes some 4 hours to lose half it's effectiveness.

95% of bodies are never autopsied. Autopsy reports arent meant to be summarized in 1 line, you are supposed to have deep comprehensive knowledge & draw your conclusions from the entire examination report. If a person dies from being dehydrated due to elevated drug levels in their system, did they die of an overdose or dehydration? Same with cardiac arrest. To say a cause of death "couldn't be determined" is more like saying "too much or not enough to report on."

@@J0SHUAKANE I realize that. Most causes tend to be obvious or from just old age. I wanted to focus on those which possibly otherwise healthy people die and they don't know. The remarkable thing was that they had these paranoia even though they knew that it's not real…! But they explained it to me the following way: Despite the rational awareness of the paranoia not being real it still felt overwhelmingly real. That feeling was so convincing and rational thoughts didn't help at all. Examples: They were sneaking and tip-toeing in their apartment because they were convinced that the cops will show up every second and they were afraid that they wouldn't hear their steps outside. They always put their ears on the door and "sshhht" all the time at me. When telling them that ther are no cops and they won't also show up they answered "We know". But they couldn't fight and resist that inner feeling telling them "Did you hear that?"…"What was that"…"They're are coming" etc.

There is no injury mechanism by which a taser can kill someone many hours after the tasing has stopped; if the taser were to "stop his heart", it would have done so while he was tased, not four hours later at the hospital. He died of drug overdose. He just happened to choose to engage in a physical struggle with the police before the overdose killed him.

Resisting arrest without assault against a human officer of the state occuring is NOT violence. That is an important distinction imo. Resisting arrest may be illegal, and it may be stupid...but it is not violent by default. I do not know if the process of this individual resisting arrest resulted in assault. I am just pointing out the distinction.

What a stupid thing to say. None of the officers gave any indication that they felt disrespected. They needed to restrain him, he was fighting them. He was warned that he would be tased if he didn't comply. If it was an emotional response by the officer, they didn't have to issue a warning. There was no other way to restrain him. Your projections of thoughts you wish the officers had have no foundation. They did call him names, didn't cuss at him, and they allowed him the option to avoid being tased.

Thank you for saying the officers got angry when he didn’t comply as if he was disrespecting them. That right there is the problem. I know people are saying the cops were patient and asked him calmly and he wouldn’t comply, but the problem is, he couldn’t comply because he was having a psychotic break. Brought on by drugs or made worse by drugs, either way, they knew he was not able to comply. The police have the right to restrain him, but once they feel disrespected and get angry, they began to treat a person like an object and no longer like a fellow human. And that’s the problem in these cases. If they had empathy and compassion, they would handle the situation differently and maybe, just maybe, less people would die.

Dr. Grande I'm disappointed in your assessment. That family is ridiculous if they think he was worth $50 million! He was a school teacher who took drugs. He's not Elon Musk! You need to watch the breakdown of the body cameras, done on the channel Thoughts of a Patrol Officer, titled "Was Keenan Anderson Killed by the LAPD?" Ben is an officer in the Columbia Police in Ohio, and he shows the entire event. Keenan didn't die until 4 hours after he arrived at the hospital, so I doubt it was just the taser that killed him. The first officer on the motorcycle, sat on the corner with Keenan for 7 minutes until another officer arrived to back him up. 7 minutes would be an eternity if you have someone who's high, dangerous, and unpredictable, and he kept on saying crazy things. The cop was just trying to keep him cool, and out of the road. If the cops had let him run off down the road and he got hit by a car and killed, everyone would be screaming about how the cops didn't save him from himself. They don't want to be laying in the roadway, in traffic, trying to detain this guy, so NO, they didn't have time on their side. All it would take would be one moron in the back of the traffic to come flying up the lane, into the last car, and they could all be pushed forward and kill or injure all of those police officers, as well as Keenan. I'm really disappointed in you making your analysis without doing your research. Police can never win, no matter what they do.

If they just didn't resist in most of these cases, they wouldn't have lost their lives. It really is that simple. The responsibility for the escalation and what happened is on them, not law enforcement.

It's feel like cops were very close to getting this one right. It's like they had the training took the class and said to themselves well we know we are supposed to treat people with mental crisis, autism and drug induced mental crisis but stop midway and say we know this but can't remember what we were trained to do. Then retreat to there old tactics to escalate and dominate with deadly force.

This wasn't a mental health related situation it was a drug related situation. I worked in a medical facility and have seen a seemingly frail 71 year old woman become so violent it took 6 police officers to subdue her and get her into our clinic. He knew when he took drugs what the risks were, the fact he was a nicely spoken middle class teacher doesn't make him any different from any other violent drug user, neither does the colour of his skin. My sympathy lies entirely with the people he put a risk and crashed into while driving on drugs and the Uber driver he tried to hijack. The force the police used wasn't excessive but his drug taking obviously was. As for suing? Only in the US could the family of a drugged up violent man, who had already caused an accident, committed a crime and then refused to follow lawful instructions given to him by Police feel they should be compensated because of his behaviour and skin colour 🙄

I understand the stance you take on the taser deployment, but I don't think it's quite fair to say it was excessive just because he was suffering from a drug induced mental event. Having already crashed his vehicle and trying to carjack another one, it was clear he was a danger to himself and others. Them recognizing the mental health event, but still needing to restrain by way of taser was fine, in my opinion, due to the fact he kept running off and not listening to commands. People on drugs can be extremely hard to restrain when they don't want to be restrained. Also, the prongs didn't make good connection to seize the body, so they used the alternative method which like the old school stun guns that you press against someone. From what I've heard, that doesn't cause the body to lock up, it really just hurts. I still have no idea if that method had anything to do with his death, but I'm almost positive the cocaine did. It's an unfortunate situation, but it's really sad that it's trying to be used as a political chess piece as another act of police brutality.

Here's the way EVERYBODY should act with policeman: COMPLY. Then... if you need to... COMPLAIN. It's an easy and very safe trick. If you have nothing to reproach yourself: COMPLY. Then... if needed... COMPLAIN. Remember this: 1) Policeman don't want to lose their job so they won't be "hard on you" if you COMPLY (follow their orders). 2) They want to verify your identity and your state of mind. Then... they will let you go if everything is fine. 3) Policeman job is to ensure that the neighbourhood you live in is secure. They need to talk to people. 4) COMPLY: Don't fight with them. Don't run away from them. Please. Read that point again. Several times. One more time: " COMPLY with the policeman and.. after the talking... if needed... COMPLAIN". With all my love.

Your analysis of this incident is biased in that the body cam evidence clearly states that the taser prongs never took hold, never penetrated the skin, yet you continue to say he was tased six times in however many seconds. You also don't mention that the officers had him move off of his stomach and sit up so he could breathe. Force was in no way excessive because he wasn't tasered six times. Had the first taser worked, the officer wouldn't have had to make further attempts. What did bug me, but was never mentioned was how the traffic continued flowing just feet away from the scene, causing the bigger threat than the taser.

An important distinction is that the taser was deployed once. It's a single shot taser but it can still be pressed against someone's skin and drive stunned. This causes pain but doesn't deliver electricity under the skin to lock muscles like shooting the probes does (assuming it works ofc)
