Short answer: do both. Strict is great for pure strength. Kipping is great for conditioning and full body exercise. It's like the difference between sprinting and jogging. Haters claim it's just flopping but that's not true, it's controlled. If you are flopping and truly lack the strength to do strict pull ups first, then yes, this can lead to injury. A kip should supplement your upper body strength, not replace your upper body strength. But if you really think it requires no strength, or doesn't involve lats, then try doing a few. You have to engage lats to do more than one of these.

Mark Rippetoe: Kipping chin-ups/pull-ups are a derivative of the jumping version. The movement is performed using the momentum of a slight swing preceding the pull, when the swing is converted into an upward roll of the hips, translating the swing energy into upward movement. The kip distributes the movement over more muscle mass, using the abs, hip flexors, and lower back in addition to the lats and arms, so that more muscle mass is used in the exercise and more reps can be done. The strict versions concentrate the effort on less muscle mass and work it harder. The strict pull-up is to the strict standing press what the kipping pull-up is to the push-press. Both the strict press and the push-press will get the weight overhead, but the latter way would get it there faster, just as would the kipping pull-up. Think of it from a functional perspective; if you needed to get up on top of a wall as fast as possible would you do a strict pull-up or would you use your entire body to heave yourself up on top of the wall as fast as possible? (and if dogs were chasing you would you even have to consider this?) Mainly it depends on your goals. I think it's worthwhile for many of us to train as many grips/variations as possible, like thickbar pull-ups, rotating bar pull-ups, ring pull-ups, towel pull-ups, kipping pull-ups, L-sit pull-ups, prone/supine/neutral grip pull-ups, one arm pull-ups, wide, narrow, etc! I don't believe there is any one "best way" to pull our bodies up from a hanging position given the variety of physical obstacles that could fit the bill. These range from tree climbing, to wall climbing, to rope climbing, to sport climbing, to anything climbable. I relate this to the variety of ways that an object can be picked up off of the ground. Sure it would be nice to always lift things up with a straight back, but that isn't always practical, so it makes sense to train with a rounded back too. Ultimately it needs to meet your goals though. So if you just want big strong biceps, do chins, but if you want to climb a tree or use gymnastic rings, better train them all. And if you never have any ambition of competing in Ninja Warrior or scaling the Eiffel Tower there's nothing wrong with that either. That's really all I have to say about it... I've seen arguments over the legitimacy of kipping go on forever and that's not what this article is about. Look over at crossfit.com and you'll see this already hashed out. It's a personal decision in the end; if you don't like kipping and you prefer to isolate the pulling muscles, do strict pull-ups. It's no big deal. Hope that clear it up at least a little bit.

I don't know why people are so against Kipping Pull Ups. Honestly, it helped me a lot starting out, and now I can actually do dead hang pull ups because of it. I try not to use the Kip in my workout, but if I'm at my failure point with the dead hangs I'd rather do Kipping than stop with the workout.

It's funny reading some of the comments on here. I used to do a bit of powerlifting; I wanted to get really strong. Whenever I'd do pull ups I would only do them strict and I admit to having a bit of a laugh about kipping. But it's the old "don't knock it til you've tried it" in effect here. I have recently started doing CrossFit and believe me, it is the true test of a real athlete. CrossFit is about muscle endurance, as well as raw strength. The reps involved in any CrossFit WOD are so high that when it comes to pull ups, there is no one on planet Earth that could perform all of them without kipping. In contrast to all the criticism it receives, CrossFit teaches you how to use your body as efficiently as possible when it comes to strength & endurance training. There are guys at my CrossFit gym snatching 100kg+ with ease, so there is definitely no lack of strength among CrossFit athletes. At the end of the day, it is just an exciting and new way to train. It helps you get stronger, fitter, and more explosive. There's people on here saying that kipping pull ups are for people who can't do strict pull ups - believe me all CrossFitters have to learn strict pull ups before they learn how to kip. And before you jump on the bandwagon of hating on CrossFit, remember that these guys and girls squat, deadlift, clean & jerk and snatch a sh*tload of weight for a lot of reps. They also do muscle ups. I know from experience that 99% of average gym junkies CANNOT do muscle ups :)

kiwidubtee Crossfit is horrible in general. There is no research that says that you can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. Maybe in people with gifted genetics or people with strict nutrition and flawless workout habits, but other than that, *it is impossible to do both at the same time.* Crossfit claims you can do both, but that is a flawed statement. Also, these movements aren't natural for the average person to be executing. Regular pull-ups with controlled, strict form will always dominate over the shitting, momentum movement these cross-shit jerk-offs have you do. And people wonder why orthodontists and chiropractors make so much money....
@Lalaland.0019 жыл бұрын
kiwidubtee 25 years in the health and fitness/bodybuilding industry. For the last 6-7 years there's been steady increase in torn rotators and knee injuries from patients attending crossfit workouts. So I thank Greg Glassman for putting my kids through college. Secondly let me explain why these injuries happen: The muscles of your rotator cuff were not meant to withstand the sheering force of continuous "kipping pullups". At the bottom of each one your rotator cuff is screaming and eventually will tear. "Kipping Pullups" probably originated from gymnastics, but guess what? A gymnast performs a kip in order to gather momentum while starting his or her routine. 1. They don't do them as part of a workout. 2. The bars they work on bend. This means there is substantial less force being applied to your shoulder. The bars are not affixed to a wall like in your "box". A good number of these people who start these crossfit classes are overweight and they want to look like the 1% of athletes they see on TV. Then as an example of how little these coaches know, they maybe asked to carry 45lbs overhead . Guess what? They've already got plenty of weight to carry on an untrained body that's not accustomed to performing an exercise. = recipe for disaster. And lastly, but I could go on. The top crossfit athletes, the real elite ones, are almost all former athletes and they do not train with you. They train by themselves and its not they same kind of WOD you do. trust me. Plus a very high percentage of them use anabolic steroids. I personally am a bodybuilder and lift like one. I have gotten into many arguments about crossfit, and this is what I think of it. As a personal trainer and nurse I am strict on form you must use correct for on everything or you can potentially hurt yourself. Are you going to tell a linebacker to tackle a running back with his head down. No, of course not cause that is stupid and not the right form. I have nothing against some of the lifts in crossfit but some I do, but even the lifts that are ok when done in crossfit you do them so quickly you fatigue yourself then form goes out the window. your shoulders are the most joint prone to injury because it is the most freely moveable which makes it less stable. the more it can move the less stable, and crossfit puts a lot of stress on your joints. What I don't get is how offended yall get. I am working in a hospital as a nurse I have take many class on the body and how the body moves and I am just simply telling you the facts. If you refuse to accept them i could care less hurt yourself, but I just there to inform you if you don't know. But hell, what do I know, right ?!

Wiki 'pull-up' and you will see many forms, one of them being kipping. People too often compare kipping to strict (or standard) pullups and cite that they are easier and less work. This is true and is actually the whole point. Kipping allows someone to do more reps (just like reducing weight in lifting) in a high-rep cardio-induced workout. If you tried to do Cindy with strict pullups, you will find most of your time was spent resting during your pullups whereas if kipping you could spend little time resting and get a great cardio workout.
@scottbridgman732110 жыл бұрын
Doppel adler pullups, pushups, situps, airsquats, They are all great bodyweight movements for high rep muscle endurance training and when incorporated in a wod can give you a great cardio workout. The issue with strict pullups is they are more limiting because you are pulling all of your bodyweight with smaller muscle groups (compared to quads for air squats). Kipping allows you to reduce the work for each rep so you can do more. Again it's a trade-off, neither is 'better'. IF you were seeking 'heavy' strength training, i wouldn't recommend pullups to begin with as they aren't meant for that either. If you are targeting lats and bi's in your program, strict pullups are great. If you are doing a wod like cindy, kipping pullups are great.

The purpose of the exercise is to develop power in the core not so much as a lat developer, although your back does assist in the lift. In that regard it probably uses more of the same muscles involved in the hang clean more so than the strict pullup. Just saying. Yes I prefer doing strict pullups myself. The kipping pullup does have a functional use though. Just an fyi.... Yug Lax, it's pussies not pussys. Cody Danielczyk, first time i've ever seen the word Irrigardlessfully. @carnivaldawgs11 жыл бұрын
john johnson That's a good exercise you mention, or touching your knees to elbows.I don't know what they are called either...knee ups? To answer your question I think the kipping pullups purpose is for developing power from the core more so than strength.... hence the speed of the lift. Having tried these the other day again and feeling the twinge in my shoulder blade afterwards, i'm just fine sticking with the classic pullup at full range of motion. That's about as good an upper body exercise as their is. I'm just saying I THINK I get the purpose/application of the kipping pullup, i'm not necessarily a subscriber to it. Maybe cause i'm on the wrong side of 40 now more than anything. :-) Happy New Year!

The purpose is to lose scapular stability (Rot cuff, serratus anterior, lats) which allows for poor body mechanics through this move, the rest of their workout and everyday life. If you were to learn from the experts in power and body mechanics such as Grey Cook or Michael Boyle, you would see how wrong of a movement this is for core, power or any other reason you would like to throw out there.

The difference, though, is that the work is generated by different muscles. In the strict pullup the muscles of the back and arms are the prime movers and therefore generate the force of movement. In kipping pullups, flexion and extension of the hips generate kinetic energy that is then transformed into vertical momentum, thus allowing the back and arms to generate a smaller force to perform the repetition. Kip is a full-body exercise, while strict is an upper-body exercise.

Strict pull-ups are better for developing both endurance and strength in the biceps, lats, brachioradialis, and brachialis, meaning the workout will more effectively work those muscles. Kipping pull-ups are better at allowing for more reps to be completed, enable momentum to be a factor in completing repetitions (this enables more reps to be completed), and allow more repetitions to be completed in a shorter amount of time. They also come with a much higher chance of rotator cuff injury.
@work0divided0by0time11 жыл бұрын
the amount of weight moved and the distance traveled are the same for both the strict pull-up and the kipping pull-up, but more pull-ups can be done in a shorter amount of time using a kipp. Therefore (work/time=power) more power is produced during the kipping pull-up. Intensity = power = work/time. No matter what you goal is, intensity is the independent variable that will maximize the rate of return on your efforts.

I can't speak on if Insanity: The Asylum is like Crossfit or not, but to answer your first question. The Kipping helps use different muscles to get your chin over the bar. When trying to identify the amount of work required to get your chin over the bar, Crossfit uses this model. force times distance / time. There are times that crossfitters will use Strict Pullups, but when you're trying to get maximum power output... Kipping helps that. I hope that helps answer your question.
@BadMartini11 жыл бұрын
Of course you want to be able to do a strict form pull-up first. But when you progress to muscle ups learning the kipping pull-up is essential.
@JohnSmith-un1zj9 жыл бұрын
A note on kipping pullups: A kipping pullups like what you see in crossfit is to a regular pullups what a push press is to an overhead press. It recruits more muscles to do the same movement instead of isolating a smaller amount. In this instance it changes the exercise to more of a cardio one than a strength one. Also, keep in mind that in order to have the shoulder girdle strength to do multiple kips without tearing anything, you have to be able to do a fair amount of strict pullups anyway. You haters should understand the rationality behind the kip rather than just outright rejecting it.

Kipping enforce posterior and anterior muscles and stabilizers. A pull up activates lats, bi's, rhoms, pec minor and traps/delts/core. Kipping activates more in total while having a major cardio/metabolic effect. Pulls are less demanding on the cardiovascular and lower body. Crossfit is about enforcing the load/demand across your entire body in every routine. It's not just isometrics or static training. It's um, oh yeah, Spartan Training baby!

understand why you do a kipping pullup instead of being ignorant. Crossfit is NOT about isolation. Don't get me wrong isolation has its own place in the body building world. But again crossfit is not body building. Its about constantly varied functional moments, power and high intensity. Its about doing more reps (at the same weight) in shorter time = more power. What is going to get you more out of breath (doing 20 strict pullups in 2 min. or 40 kipping pullups in 2 min.)
@xmaikelx10 жыл бұрын
All these haters just don't know what the idea of crossfit is. In essence, it's the opposite off isolated training. You use multiple joints and muscles at high intensity over different exercises.. Better because they build better muscles in your back... stronger/bigger lats are created by isolating the movement to those muscles, not using momentum to get up over the bar. That being said, the goal of CF isn't to build muscle, a lot of it (to me) is to get workouts done as fast as possible while still stressing your muscles to grow/get lean. So you're absolutely right, definitely depends on the objective of the person exercising.

There's a lot of criticism in the comments, but I think a lot of you guys don't realize that women can't generally just start doing pull ups without some sort of additional preparation. Modified forms like this to work on the pull up muscles and the form are the way we get there. There's absolutely nothing wrong with building up the muscles in this way to eventually be able to achieve a pull up.

luke swank because they dont have that rule, as simple as that. you know how the butterfly stroke in swimming was invented? somebody used a loophole in the rules for breaststroke. it's just how it works in sports. technique is developed within the rules to show maximum results. you wouldnt ask why they are using bicycles in tour de france.... much easier than running those hills isnt it?
@ffryan9 жыл бұрын
HiSpeedOxygen The idea behind the kipping is the same as with most of crossfit. It is about the total number. Their goal is to do "work" which simply is another way of saying completing a rep. They want to maximize the "work" they do so they make the exercises easier wherever they can. The kipping is their best example of that. It's not meant to be a strength building exercise or a bodybuilding exercise. It is simply meant to help somebody get their chest/chin to the bar as many times as they can. There are a lot of fitness snobs who will bash anyone who does things differently than they do. We've seen it for years with powerlifters and bodybuilders. The constant thing seems to be that so many people cannot get their head around the fact that somebody else has a different goal than they do. It works both ways with crossfit athletes. They get slammed because they do things differently, and they slam anyone who does it differently that crossfitters. Obviously that is a generalization, but you get my point. Athletes like Jason Khalipa, Rich Froning, Ben Smith, etc are still better athletes than 99% of their critics. There is not a single one of these guys at the crossfit games who can't do at least 30 deadhang pullups
@ronineditor99209 жыл бұрын
+ffryan So... it's about numbers? I'd rather do 20 legit pull-ups, getting a REAL workout... then a fake number of assisted pull-ups to satisfy my ego by convincing myself I'm stronger than I actually am. I just can't fathom that mentality and it kind of sums up the problem with Crossfit... that their people are more concerned about looking the part instead of actual, real strength. Pull-ups are one of the oldest and most useful exercises. When I started working out, I couldn't do one... now I do 12 sets of 25 each (varying hand positions) because I do them the RIGHT way. Yeah, I could could cheat with these kipping ones and get high-fives from "bros" at the gym... but at the end of the day, it doesn't benefit me.

this teaches you generate power using your legs and hips to do an explosive movement, and leads to being able to do other gymnastic movements. "flailing around an idiot" it's an controlled gymnastic movement. it has a different goal than you've stated.

Kipping: A form of cheating while doing pull-ups, whereby an individual struggling to do another abruptly jerks the knees upward to provide extra lift and remove the weight of said body parts from the lift equation.
@Slagernicus11 жыл бұрын
Unless you're used to doing perfect muscle ups with 100+lbs of weight on you in which case you can get over the ledge a lot easier than someone doing crossfit. I don't mean to say that you were wrong, because you are partially correct. Muscle isolation CAN be useless, but it is not always useless.

I'm no crossfitter, I do standard underhand/overhand pullups. I grip with my fingers rather than using any of the palm (saves getting calluses), you build up grip strength over a long time, theres no quick fix for these things. So yeah just keep at it for the long run.

I don't know why I still can't do this. I can do 10 clear dead hands but not one with kipping. Weird. I will master this. Thanx for the tip bro. Excellent!

Yes, that's the exact reasoning behind it. For resources on Crossfit. you can checkout crossfit.com they have something on there called "crossfit journal". it has hundreds of articles written on why and how we do things. Everything from the lifts and workouts themselves to the diet that most crossfitters follow. It's REALLY informative.

For everyone who says just do a regular pull up, you can't really do a kipping pull ups without being able to do a regular one. Kipping pull ups purposely take more body power and momentum

Notice here guys.... that her pull up starts from her lower body. :) If your legs and hips get more tired during pull ups, you're doing something wrong.

for the people who find this easy. try it 50 times, thats the real work out

If you felt like your arm was being ripped out of your socket it's because you weren't controlling your movement. Jason isn't trying to get big. Crossfit isn't about big. It's about being strong over a long period of time. It is much easier on your bis and lats, nowhere did anyone say this movement is equally demanding on those two muscle groups, but it does include other muscle groups and is a different kind of demanding.

I'm sure she can do a number of Strict Pull Ups (although not as many kipping pullups). But Kipping Pullups are useful as well. If for some reason in real life, I'm hanging under something and NEED to get on top. I'm not going to worry about doing a strict pullup. I'm going to do EVERYthing I can to get up there. Kipping is very Functional. But saying that. DeadHang Pull ups are also useful. The point being. It is handy to know how and strength to do each of them.
@MrGre4tness11 жыл бұрын
not always man.. I used to think the same way, but then I saw american ninja warrior tv show. There is this one obstacle where it's easier when the competitor used kipping pullups.

"What most people don't realize is that the average elite crossfitter can do 30-50 strict pull-ups depending on their size. " next comment "You believe that the best of the best crossfitters cannot do 30+ strict pullups?" There is a difference between "average elite crossfitters" and "best of the best crossfitters", so we're not even arguing about the same thing anymore. I have only seen one woman do over thirty consecutive strict and she was a former gymnast, not a crossfitter.

I suffer from shoulder impingement. I can do 20 dead hang pull ups but only do these while doing cf work outs because I just got my shoulders healthy and stable and don't want to reinjure myself

I have to disagree with you here. What is a pull up? Taking your body from a hanging position to where your chin is above the bar? Yes? If so, we completed that range of motion. I hope everyone has a great day.
@callofdutyplayer100011 жыл бұрын
Yes if you train your back. Crossfit wasnt designed to build muscle. It was designed to help you do the most work in the shortest amount of time and effort. If some one was chasing you or you are in a combat situation and someone trais to kill you you wouldnt do a perfect pull up over an obsitcle. You would want to get over it in the shortest amount of time and with minimum effort. I hope you guys understand and dont hate on them cuz they dont hate on you. Have a good day all.

i have a legitimate question. what does this kipping accomplish? also i will post this here. so is insanity the asylum like cross fit? also, what are good resources for this? i would love to learn more.

BIIG Question @Jason Khalipa and other CrossFitters I've been at a crossfit affiliate for about 8 months. I am having MAJOR trouble holding onto the bar i.e. pull up and t2b. I find that my arms aren't tired but my hands are too sore to hold the bar. I try to hold on but my hands rip. I don't want to use gloves because my hands will re-sensitise to the bar but I've tried chalk.. I just wondered what you think I can do to redeem this?? Kind regards, Your loyal fans in New Zealand :)

Just out of curiosity: why don't they just do strict pull-ups? Doing 50 strict pull-ups is a lot more work than doing whatever this is.

Remember kids. You don't want to pull yourself you just want to pop yourself when doing a pull-up.
@apparentlyfallacy8 жыл бұрын
That pop would be your shoulder. Crossfit is only good for keeping morons out of regular gyms.

People who think this is a gymnastics pull up, the kip is a gymnastics move and gymnasts do normal pull-ups like everyone else. If you want to see a complete kip which this isn't and this shit is significantly easier than the full kip, KZbin gymnastics kip.

I did P90x and it was kind of hard but it didn't do anything for me, hence why I switched to Crossfit and got better results since it was more suited for my goals (and was way harder) Sure some people may have success on P90x or other workout DVD's but for me, Crossfit fits my goals better.
@murphydca12 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with the kipping pullup. Gymnasts have used them for years and I think many would agree they are some strong and well balanced individuals. Crossfit balances exercises from a number of genres very well and builds great muscle tone and strength in both males and females. Crossfit is also about mobility. The goal isn't big, bulky muscles where you can barely scratch your ass after a workout, or get the soap to the other armpit in the shower. Crossfit guys are some fit folks.

As someone that has done P90X and Rushfit DVDs... Those things aren't a Joke. I do Crossfit for the mixture and functionality of it. If you train doing Insanity, P90X, or whatever... they will kick your tail. but for me and my workout routines. Crossfit helps that out. I think it's pretty easy to say that them important thing is getting out there and getting healthy.
