Gilbert Arenas tells the Gil's Arena crew that Team USA lied about what happened with Kawhi Leonard. They said in a statement that he has been practicing well. But he was on vacation in Costa Rica. How could they know if he was out of shape the last several weeks if he wasn't around? Embiid was going either way, because he has 3 nations he can legally represent. So, Philly decided he would be at the lowest risk of injury playing for Team USA. Instead of playing heavy minutes as the #1 option on the other 2 national teams. Embiid likely plays 20min/game, still gets his Gold participation medal, and likely won’t compete in FIBA or the Olympics again. That’s a big win for Embiid & Philly.

It could be the case that they were waiting for the finals to finish in order to determine who else was gonna get injured (between Kyrie, White, and Brown), and then taking steps to find out who was available, healthy, and willing. It could be that their organization was taking time to pick a player because they were moving slow with "I set a meeting for next Tuesday to discuss Kawhi's replacement, because that's the next opening we have on everybody's calendars" (that type of sh*t can easily waste a week here and a week there). They've probably also been in a sort of wait and see mode, giving Kawhi 2.5 months to recover from his injury, and after 2.5 months, his recovery was proving to be medium, but not quite good enough to risk it. Or an insurance company could've stepped him and refused to clear him very last minute.
