I love Marty so, so, soooo much. I'm not freaked out by meeting 'famous' people, but I might be a stuttering mess around him. :) Just the funniest and truly seems like such a sweet man. This story is in his memoir, which everyone should listen to him read!! I can't imagine reading (don't get me wrong, I LOVE books) it rather than getting to hear Marty do all the voices, such a good book. Memoirs are hard to do well, but his is just laugh out loud (and cry a few tears) funny.

Marty's got a way of phrase-tuning that you rarely get in these last few generations. Yeah, we have Patton Oswalt, but his 'voice' ain't the same as Short's. He's just a ball of old-world ring-a ding dinginess that makes you feel like you're at the Tropicana wearing a slim-cut suit with Kim Novak and/or Lola Falana by your side while she's smoking a cigarette and you're all laughing like maniacs at his anecdotes.

Martin deserves all the adoration and kudos he receives. An amazing comedic presence his improvisational wizardry is second to none. I will say genius and competitive drive do come with certain baggage that being an ego and as self effacing as Marty can be I do sense it. Of course everyone has their own version of humble pie served to them. Martin’s TV and movie career while successful aren’t of a super star level. He’s just Martin Short beloved by his faithful admirers me being one. Conan has unfair advantage really with a nightly nationwide show, but in a way the same could be said of him.

My boss's wife was in a supermarket aisle in Pennsylvania, and a handsome man asked her about buying tuna for his mother. She told the man if his mother is watching her weight, then get the tuna in water, because tuna in oil has more calories. The handsome man thanked her. She thought it was because of her advice, but in hindsight, the handsome man thanked her for treating him like a normal human being. She and the man ended up in the checkout aisles, and the cashiers were going crazy. They told my boss's wife who the man was, and she had no idea who he was, even after hearing his name. Richard Gere.
