As a DOT inspector, we were finding Autocars to be in the very small minority of the kinds of trucks we inspected, chiefly because of their age and because most were doing the kinds of work that yours was and were impractical for over the road use. So, in the rare event that an Autocar was brought in to the inspection site, it was usually very, very old. One of the points of failure was often a pitman arm was found to be loose on the output shaft of the steering gear box and your truck might even have two of those (tough to tell from the view). So, I'm recommending you have a peek at that and see what you find.

The reason you have 4 battery cables is to carry the correct amount of current (amps) to your starter. It's called parallel wiring. You would need to more than double your cable total cross section if you ran just 2 cables instead of 4 smaller ones. Love your channel and your truck!!!
@Hyratel9 ай бұрын
was just scrolling to make sure someone else hadn't already answered and "4 minutes ago" yes, the larger cables are also an absolute bear to wrangle. it's even used in large commercial wiring, 2 wires is straight out twice the amp capacity, while being almost as easy to manipulate as the single first size.

Hey Matt, for the winch conversion to hydraulic, the calculations for determining the required hydraulic motor torque are quite straight forward from first principles. Required max rope pull at full sheave diameter divided by the worm ratio, add worm drive efficiency losses, will give you a starting point for selection of an orbital motor torque. Suggest you contact a company like Eaton hydraulics with this information and available line pressure, they will select a suitably sized orbital motor and valving for you. Good luck with this preservation, a really interesting project. Cheers from Australia 🇳🇿 😀😀
@zolof9119 ай бұрын
Depending on the hydraulic motor size and shape, it might be an advantage to keep the last roller chain and connect the hydraulic motor with a sprocket. It would allow different placement options as well as the potential to fine-tune ratios. Definitely think hydraulic drive is the way to go. And please do keep the bumper!

The doubled battery leads is probably to share the cranking amps between the two to save from the build up of heat from resistance in just one lead. Just one lead by itself would probably get hot and potentially burn up.
@jblob57649 ай бұрын
You'd usually just use a thicker wire to avoid that issue. Id have to guess you're right but probably because its the wire they had on hand when they replaced the old one and didnt wanna go get a spool of fatter wire so they ran 2. Hourly rate right 🤷♂️ lol
@bc29519 ай бұрын

@nostreamavailable90909 ай бұрын
Yeah guys some serious cranking amps there , you're both bang on the money l reckon, but what gauge wire would you have to use to get a single cable that was man enough for the job done you reckon?
@nostreamavailable90909 ай бұрын
I just based my thoughts on my experience with CB and ham gear you see, thicker power cables are just safer and better, l have been known to make dc power cables for high power rigs and linears from adapting old sets of jumper cables. Works pretty good. In radio gear if you can't get the ampage through the cables properly you end up with frequency drift and warbling or clipping audio , in severe cases can even cause a fire. Nasty business if you get it wrong
@gillisbhome9 ай бұрын
Yup this is what I was gonna post, two runs to share the amp load. Why two instead of a bigger wire?, cost, material on hand, size restrictions on routing or lug size at starter end, or ease of use. Thicker wire is stiffer and harder to bend/route (usually).

If I might come with a suggestion, as an electrician I recommend that you replace the battery cables because old corroded copper gives higher resistance for the power. 4 battery cables are better in my opinion because if they're of equal length the power will be drawn from both batteries equally. If they're of different length the battery with the shortest cables will be working harder.

We’ve got a 1980 AutoCar. This truck is what brought me to your channel. That 230 was original, that’s what was in ours. The one we have had a lot of idle hours and we had to replace the tired 230 with a 290. My Uncle just had the fuel pump rebuilt and put new injectors in it. It’s turned up to a least a 300 and is a world of difference. It’s geared low with an 8LL transmission but we need all that low-end. I’ll be watching this project. We need to paint ours as well

Matt, I agree with you. That front bumper is great. 👍. I’d clean it up and send it out to be powder coated the same color as the truck.

Gotta say love seeing the work on the old Constructor , I remember my father driving one. The machine had a bench seat , and my brother being the helpful sort decided to armourall the bench seat , resulting when my father went around a turn in her he slid halfway across the cab. Keep up the awesome work Matt!!

Yeah, my reaction too- Today, I have to turn three broken lawnmowers into one or two working ones. Spring/summer is on the way! (Seems kinda trivial, but Matt gets me in a frame of mind to fix stuff.... After I watch the vid.). Anyhow, Cheers!

Hello "ONE BOLT". Back in the 70's, a freind of mine was changing out a fan that weighed about 10 tons. Praise be that the crane driver was highly skilled and aware that fitters are prone to errors. The area was extremely messy and the crap was up to 2ft thick. The cleaning gang had been in and did an excellent job. However there was on spot where some crap was left covering a nut, The crane driver another freind of mine, had done the job before. They went for the lift etc and he made a good act of nearly toppling the crane. Of course being Irish he "exploded" and bailed out of the crane and went on the charge. Found a broom and shovel and went straight to the offending nut and made it visible. Of course the language was Aussie at a high volume. The Fitter soon had an audience who were "praising" his skills and the name ONE BOLT stuck. About the only document which did not have the name added was his Drivers Licence Cheers

Good to see the autocar getting done! Two sets of battery cables - Simple, those are MASSIVE batteries adn they can send a lot of power, two sets of cables isn't going to catch fire as easy.

I am SUPER STOKED to see you FINALLY (😂) gettin' with it on that Autocar!!! I worked in a small(ish) foundry throughout the '80s. The company that hauled in the specialty sand that we used to make our molds and cores had a fleet of Constructors they pulled their pneumatic tankers with. Those trucks had bright red frames, Dayton hubs, wheels, springs, and axles with PURE WHITE body if memory serves me correctly, one of the drivers told me that they ALWAYS painted Dupont Emron paint. Each time the trucks returned to the shop at the end of each day, the maintenance crew would make any repairs necessary and then do a complete wash job on the tractors and trailers! Those were the cleanest, most BEAUTIFUL rigs on the road back then!!!

I should mention that my great grandfather worked as a machinist for Autocar in the 20's in Ardmore Pa. Love seeing the autocars getting some love. They used to be a Pittsburg company for a couple years but didn't become Autocar till they moved to Ardmore outside Philly. They sold out to White after the war and moved in the 50's to Exton a little west of Ardmore. 54 or 55 I think. The Ardmore plant burned down in 56 or 57 and according to my family it was massive and people were scared because of all the chemicals for all those years. One of their buildings survived and was a Kiddy City till it burned in the 90's. White went under in 81, so I'd say you have one of the first and one of the last White Autocars...

Watching you get started on the Autocar brought back fond memories of Christine. I'm glad you are going to give the Autocar much of the same love. New engine, updated running gear, etc. and paint... Keep the bumper and install hydraulics for the winch.Thanks for bringing us along for the ride!

She’ll serve you well. Thanks for doing what you do, saving iron and sharing your adventures. You’re a class act. Thanks

As an electrician, I would only "guess" because one conductor will not handle the amperage that is required to turn the motor under load so they "paralleled" the feeder. Always hit the "thumbs up" button and frequently leave comments. If you get the opportunity, I would like to see whatever happened to the church you worked on awhile back. I was really enjoying that project being a old "construction" (old school) type. ;o) Obviously a OLD gear head also !!!

I love that front bumper. Nobody messes with a bumper like that - it has attitude! Great idea for the winch - save a bit/lot of weight.
@enormousdork38316 ай бұрын
I personally think your current ideas are amazing. You said it yourself, it is not going to be a full time road rig. So it will basically be a local multifunction power unit. Though future thoughts on creature comfort might be a good idea. Never know when you might need that huge winch and a low boy trailer to pick up one of those deals that you simply cannot pass up. Its a excellent start on a brilliant idea. 😁👍

I Adore the old Autocar, in the mid 80's a good friend a mine ran one short trip from PA to Cleveland and back, and the scrap yard we worked with had 4 or 5 that hydro lifted scrap hoppers with chains, Massive heavy trucks, I can't wait to see Whatever You do to this machine, it's all we been talking about for about a year. : )

You guys will definitely have something to talk about this week, between the engine tear down and the engine removal (with all the stuff that comes off to make that happen) you should have a couple of good weeks of things to discuss! Lol Definitely a fun watch!

Love your channel! As others mentioned, the battery cable arrangement helps reduce the voltage drop while starting the engine. Single larger cables could be used but it isn't practical. Yes, the batteries COULD be connected in the tray and just one pair of cables run out of it, but then you'd need excessively huge cables from the tray to the starter. With only one positive and one negative cable from the tray, each cable would need to be twice the size. There's a practical limit to how much amperage can be sent in a single cable due to physically handling it and being able to terminate it.
