TFF are artists in the truest sense. This...the choreography, the clothes, the lyrics, the texture created by the use of instruments, all of it is just so inspired and cool. Roland and his dancing! And way before bands like this were being asked to add visuals. Nobody was telling them how to do it, they just got up and did it. I always enjoy Curt's colourful basslines, too.

The saddest part about this song and other ones off The Hurting, like Pale Shelter, is when you realise it was all about their parents, particularly their mums. They were a pair of very sad, shy boys who felt abandoned by their dads and rejected by their mums. "I did not have the nerve To ask you how you feel... It's all too late, You can't change" :,(

I am a GenXer and TFF was hardly underrated then nor today. It is just that they were not flamboyant like Duran Duran and disbanded early. Plus, Curt Smith shunned fame. Yep, I am a big TFF fan. Tears for Fears was pitted against Depeche Mode then because of their lyrics.

In my mind the 80's were by far the most explosive, exciting and innovative of all pop music decades. I'd love that to be an indisputable fact. There are younger (and older) people who would disagree with me and who seem to love the current music as much as I love 80's music. I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. All the song is great, iconic, but the bass lines and the synth part in particular are epic. Tears for Fears (along with Depeche Mode I think) were decisive in defining the New Wave/Synth Pop sound of the first half of the '80s.
