Roland Orzabal is a musical genius and a great guitarist! There is a Tears For Fears album called "Raoul & The Kings Of Spain", although Curt Smith had left and it is really a Roland solo album. It is one of my favorite albums of all time. Highly recommended. Incredible songs and an amazing sonic tapestry. A concept album centering on machismo, heritage, family, and love. One of the most overlooked masterpieces of the past twenty years, in my opinion. I guarantee you will be highly rewarded by checking it out!

Tears For Fears are among the new gods of Rock n' Roll.........They are superb lyricists and musician and they talk about deep social divides and racism and sexism in the western societies. Really Really love their message. And they know what cords or string to pick in the human soul which make their songs emotional.

What I think you were trying to say about their music at the beginning of your comments is that the music is, yes, serious, and that’s a good thing when it’s also substantive, has basis in relatable situations or emotions and doesn’t insult the listeners intelligence. That’s definitely what Tears For Fears has always brought to the table with their musical output. While I love this song I personally love “Head Over Heels” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” more, but, I still think this song is brilliant. You were wondering about the meaning of “Shout” here is what Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith say from Wikipedia page for the song Shout:: “A lot of people think that 'Shout' is just another song about primal scream theory, continuing the themes of the first album. It is actually more concerned with political protest. It came out in 1984 when a lot of people were still worried about the aftermath of The Cold War and it was basically an encouragement to protest." - Roland Orzabal "It concerns protest inasmuch as it encourages people not to do things without actually questioning them. People act without thinking because that's just the way things go in society. So it's a general song, about the way the public accepts any old grief which is thrown at them." - Curt Smith

There are things I often experience when listening to a song for the first time. Sometimes focusing on the lyrics can distract you from the music, and sometimes the music prevents you from following the lyrics. It’s for that reason, I’ll often go back and immediately listen to the song again. This process enriches the experience.

Song os about a psycho therapeutic technique called scream therapy It was popular in tbe 70's John Lennon actially ised it in his first solo album The theory is if you scream it will release pent up emotion While Tears didnt actually sctream in this song The sentiment was there Another good song by them is Sowing The Seeds Of Love This track is unusual in structure It has multiple bridges but it still holds together and is coherent

When it comes to 80’s music, it’s worth it to watch the music video. The sound quality is excellent and back then we experienced the whole package, the song and the visual. Just don’t read too much into them, it was “art”. 😁

To answer your question, this is the original mix that was released as a single, as far as I can tell . Yes, the lyrics were washed-out a bit amidst the music, which I assume was an intentional choice since their albums were well-produced. Despite that, I was always able to understand most of the lyrics in this song because Roland Orzabal enunciated pretty well. There were a couple of phrases that I couldn't understand, which I learned about later. ("And when you've taken down your guard" was one.)

80s pop didn't always give us much to love, but I really liked these guys. New Wave wasn't a hopeless genre, it just took someone with some real talent to make it sound good. I agree with what you were saying about the emotional depth. I hear and feel it without even needing to follow the lyrics.
