This is going to sound so freaking dumb and cheesy, but when that transition from Super Mario Kart's Rainbow Road to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Rainbow Road happened, I got a little emotional! Really, it's just so impressive how far we've come, but the same fun has always been there, yet again (and I recognize commenting this on a Digital Foundry video of all places won't make me popular) proving to me that gameplay will ALWAYS be more important than tech, which I feel many third party companies AND consumers are disillusioned by. Anyways, great video.

wicked science well in my experience, I've played many games with amazing (as in realistic) graphics, but left bored and unsatisfied whereas I've left many games that weren't realistic left wanting more. Personally I'd take a more stylized art style over realistic graphics any day of the week, but I still appreciate realism, just in moderation.

Mario Kart had an additional chip (DSP-1) to help with the mode 7 calculations. Weird this wasn't mentioned!

@MaxwelThuThu7 жыл бұрын
Crash He explains that mode 7 is a SNES feature, so don't need a special chip. It's correct. But yes, SMK uses the DSP-1 just like Pilotwings to do some special things with the mode 7.
@shukterhousejive7 жыл бұрын
He also said that MKDS tapped into the GBA chip, which I'm pretty sure was 100% forbidden and would make the game unplayable on the DSi. Somebody needs to up their factchecking game.

If he was talking about the 33Mhz ARM7 CPU, then it would work on DSi as DSi still had that chip. the DSi also used the same ARM9 main CPU as the DS, just clocked to 133Mhz up from 67Mhz

Nintendo are masters are creating incredible games, with near perfect performance. Whoever you think is the best developer to create perfect ports can be given a serious run for their money by Nintendo. We've all gotten so used to getting a clusterfuck of patches months after games release, that it seems alien to pick up a Nintendo game and spend weeks 100 percenting it without a single patch in between (since it's usually not needed for them). Their passion for perfection really shines through in every game, you can genuinely still feel it 40 years later. Phenomenal!

They sure have on hell of a dedicated fan base.

Dingleberry Tech the near perfect preformance comes from using GameCube like graphics GameCube on. Xbox and Sony can do it also using last gen graphics.
@FrankieHiltz7 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Nintendo (regardless of power) pushes their consoles to their absolute limits, while maintaining incredible fluidity. Wheras, when the other's try to do so, they wind up with a 960p upscaled, 30fps with constant drops to 20. They couldn't even get Crash to run at 60 fps on the PS4, where as Nintendo could port it to do so on the Switch with nearly identical graphics at a crisp 60. Regardless of the max graphical output of either platform, Nintendo knows how to squeeze every last drip of available resources from their consoles. When Sony/Microsoft do that, they wind up with a 120gb size game with upscaled 1600p at 20/30fps.

I think that with each Nintendo system, they put out a Mario Kart game as a means to show off their technical improvements with each generation of console they put out. Super Mario Kart is what I played a lot during my childhood. I remember Battle Mode with my friends. So much rage and LOL'ing. I never got a Nintendo system afterwards so playing the N64 was done through my friends' houses and I had a lot of fun. I never played Super Circuit or Double Dash. I did try out Mario Kart 7 on DS and Mario Kart Wii on the Wii when I had a 3DS, DS, and Wii years ago briefly before I sold them all. I never played Mario Kart 8 or 8 Deluxe. I'm a PlayStation gamer mainly. ^_^

Great video! I have some small nitpicks to point out though. You mention that from Double Dash and onwards, the series takes an only-3D approach, but there are some minor issues with that statement. Mario Kart DS is a prime example of cutting some edges down when it comes to performance. A lot of track features such as enemies and other obstacles were full 2D sprites, as well as the majority of the projectile items that you could see during gameplay. Granted, they were not as noticable as the character sprites in older games, but you'd be hard pressed not to see them in slower paced modes such as Mission Mode. Apart from that, this was a great nostalgia trip. I do like this franchise a lot, so seeing someone giving it a technical and analytical loveletter is always appreciated from my end.

Praise Kekistan I don't know how graphics could get much better. It's not going for realism so it doesn't really benefit from increased power as theyve already perfected their graphical style. So the improvements will have to come from gameplay, but even then there's nothing to improve. I reckon their best bet is to add some adventure mode like Diddy Kong Racing or another mechanic, like that burrowing one they thought about for 7.

Yeah except for that piece of crap that is the N64. So many games run sub 30 and dip well into low 20's and sometimes even 10-15! All because Nintendo wanted to stupidly cut costs on the motherboard, detaching the main cpu from a secure ram connection, preventing it from calculating code at a efficient level, quite pathetic. Luckily they redeemed themselves, and developed the GameCube to be a mighty greased workhorse that the 64 easily could have been. Allowing locked 60fps masterpieces like Melee, MPrime and FZGX to be born.
@spectrumbots42687 жыл бұрын

Super Mario Kart isn't actually running at 60fps. It's **refreshing** at 60fps, but the split screen view requires them to pull off a bit of a trick: The SNES can only render one Mode 7 view point. Since Super Mario Kart is ALWAYS split screen, even in singleplayer, what this means is that it has to alternate updating the top view and the bottom view on every other frame. What this means is that while the game itself is running at 60fps, each view (top and bottom) can only display at half of that any given time (30fps). As the story goes, that's what deterred Nintendo from making a two-player version of F-Zero. F-Zero's full-screen singleplayer presentation allowed for real 60fps, but with splitting the view in half for two player, they needed to slow the game down for the reduced framerate and decided to turn it in to its own separate franchise. Sorry; it just kind of bugged me when he complained that Mario Kart Super Circuit and Konami Krazy Racers "only" ran at 30fps and how much "better" Super Mario Kart was at 60. (Similarly, I'm pretty sure Mario Kart DS also does not run at a locked 60; it might in an emulator, but I think the framerate drops to 30 on some of the busier tracks on real hardware. it's hard to tell)

Worth mentioning that the n64 didn't quite do bilinear filtering, it actually used a novel 3-sample filtering technique, which explains the diamond-like artifacts you get at oblique angles. Also worth mentioning the interesting edge anti-aliasing that the Nintendo DS did. Both features are primary reasons emulated footage looks so different to the real thing.

DANNYonPC It's not that intetesting and you can find DF tech comparisons of all Battlefield games since Bad Company if you want to. Battlefield was mostly PC back in the day.
