The michelins are really durable looking at the performance. Had the same experience with the PS4 from Michelin (the more street than performance oriented version compared to the PS4S). Bought a set in 2018, did 40.000km at least with it, including 3 trackdays. My parents did 60k with a set on their family car. They are a bit more expensive than most other brands, but much more durable than my former experiences (bridgestone/pirelli/vredenstein). Your way of using tyres is very different to most 'normal' people, but it gives a good indication. Great video

@@PolishAlexx Anglais Totally wrong! You only had to store them in the recommended conditions ...stop generalizing also it's really annoying
@nYdGeo3 жыл бұрын
I don't care about how well they keep of stored properly. Alexander is absolutely correct when they are on the car. Due to the pandemic, bad weather, etc.,, we lost or missed most of our local track days over the past year and a half. Most of the miles on my PS4S have been highway miles (to places like The Dragon) along with trips back and forth of the Cherohala Skyway. Halfway through their usable tread life, they are beginning to look dry rotted and cracked. The last set did the same on our other car. This is not at all new. Many of us have heard this from other drivers as well as tire shops. When I ordered the PS4S for my vehicle, the dealer asked how long they'd be on the car and then I think they would last more than 2 years. He said it was because even if they aren't worn out at the 2-year mark, I'll probably need to replace them specifically due to a known issue with Michelin tires, that they don't hold up long term. It's meaningless to me because I never get close to 2 years out of a set of summer tires. But let's please not pretend that shortcomings often exist even among the very best products.
@carlos640304 жыл бұрын
When it comes to tire tech talk, you're the person I'd DEFINITELY listen to and would take advice from on which tires work or don't work very well. I'm extremely surprised you guys use Nankang tires. I've seen that name here in the States, but I've never seen or have ever heard of anyone using that brand. In fact, all of the Nankang tire offerings I've seen advertised here are cheap, normal, all-season, regular commuter car tires. I was surprised to just now learn about those AR1s, which I don't believe are sold here in the U.S. I had no idea Nankang offered track performance tires until seeing this video. Great content, man!

I have a GTI TCR with Cup2 in N0 specification mounted from the factory. With lots of weight on the front axle and also lots of torque, I can push the Cup2 pretty fast to its limit, even on public roads. The problem is the soft side wall, which in the N0 spec is even more soft, than the standard one. On the front the outside edge of the tire gets too hot and therefore the tire begins to slide a lot, due to overheating of the compound. You can feel it in the steering, the feedback becomes more laggy and imprecise. I will try the AR-1 next, I think this will be way better, due to the stiffer sidewall.
@RobertMitchell4 жыл бұрын

@Chris675R4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertMitchell I was thinking about the AR-1 before, but your feedback sealed the deal for me. It's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm currently converting the TCR to a ringtool, so the main purpose will be the Racetrack including the Nordschleife. I only go fast on backroads with no traffic, 90% of the time I'm within the traffic laws. By the way, thanks for the in depth review of those tires 👍
@Chris675R4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertMitchell I have the AR-1 know fitted on my TCR. It really does benefit from the way stiffer sidewall. The turn in is way sharper and the stability throughout the turn is great. Also the TCR doesn't move as much with the rear on hard breaking compared to the Cup2. The peak grip limit is higher than with the Cup2, but not as much as I aspected, which shows how good the Cup2 really is. But the AR-1 handles heat a lot better and the handling benefits are exactly what I was hoping for. Next step is to see, how the AR-1 performs on the Nordschleife, but after your videos I'm pretty confident, that it does very well 😉

Great content and very practical info that's hard to come by elsewhere. I appreciate your unbiased and fair comments, Robert. I have been running the Federal RSR for a number of years both on track and street. I too have experienced the dreaded split across the tire surface, but it never affected the performance - still, it's disconcerting. I have been quite happy with the performance and the durability on longer stints compared to regular P Zeros. However, once the temps get high the drop-off is significant. I run them on my Z4 Coupe with 265hp. They are very reasonable in the wet with acceptable ride comfort and noise on the street. The last set I ran only on the street and it lasted only 20K km due to the 2.5-3.0 deg camber. If I had swapped sides they would have gone 40K easy. They are so cheap though, that I can genuinely recommend them for street and track use. I will swap mine for a set of NS-2R, just to try out something different. Hope this helps someone...

Across the pond the 4s is known on hot days to give up very dramatically at track days. Interesting about Nankang offerings as I didn't percieve them as being that strong in the market. The Direzza type you have I don't think we get, maybe that one is in the past. I have been at COTA in a set of Trofeo that were a little old and they were no longer viable for the 765LT the owner had after the first day. Another student with fresh ones on a Giulia Quad had a good set of runs with them but limited. I agree on stiff sidewalls and feel. So far after trying, Hankook Z214, F200, I am back to a full slick Pirelli DH, but these are not what you would run on the ring as a business model. The DH is fantastic, the F200 when super fresh as well. I also have some Conti 200TW tires to try in the near future.

My experience is for supercars the homologated tyre (and its super sports option version) are always best for a period of around 3-4 years. Pirelli and Michelin for example stagger the release of their products for a given fit so they don’t directly compete. My F430 was homologated on Pirelli which was the choice until they homologated a newer generation Michelin tyre... i expect soon a new Pirelli will take overs as best solution next cycle.

I have ran CUP2R, Cup2 and Trofeo R as well as Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 on my GT2RS and GT3. In terms of a qualifying lap i rate them in this order, CUP2R, Trofeo R, Dunlop Maxx Race 2 and last Cup2. I do participate in Time Attack runs on long circuits over two days competition and i found out that the best tire still providing me with quickest laps after 15 to 20 laps is the Trofeo R. If Cup2R is 2 seconds faster on the first lap than a Trofeo R on BIC F1 track (around 2:10 laps), by the 5th lap Trofeo R matches it and by the 15th lap the Trofeo R is still going strong dropping around 2-3 seconds from the qualifying lap while the Cup2R see a 3-4 seconds drop so Cup2R ends up slower than a Trofeo R. I noticed the same with Cup2 even it still has alot of material left. I have seen up to 4 seconds drop in performance after 10 laps while the tire still look good. The Maxx Race 2 held better performance over a longer period dropping around 2-3 seconds after 15 laps and held there for a while until it started chunking off from the outer side of the tires even though it has plenty of material in the middle, it seems like it needs more camber than the other tires. In your opinion, how would the Direzza fare against the tires i listed above in absolute qualifying time and after 15laps lap times performance? I ask because it gets too expensive to use two sets of Cup2R for each day to maintain a good level of performance over 4 track configurations. Im looking at a tire that can provide me 1 seconds slower qualifying lap than the Cup2R but maintain that performance longer than the Cup2R 2-3 laps window of absolute speed. I really think for your use that the Trofeo sounds like it makes the most sense.. where as the Cup2R is faster it just doesn't stay that way for long. I call it sort of a qualifying tire for just that reason. Sounds like youre having some fun!

Robert Mitchell By the way, Michelin just came up with a new Cup2 connect, they say its 7 seconds faster after 10 laps, so i guess they are trying to solve the quick drop in performance after the first 2-3 laps. Check them out if you can.

Your video has cemented my decision to get rid of the MPSS on my M140i with an LSD and replace them with a set of MP4S. I live in the and MPSS is the wrong tyre for the weather. Grip is lacking during winter and during the summer the rears take long to get up to temperature unless the tarmac is toasty. They are gloriously grippy when 40-50C but that is a rare occasion in the UK.
@philiphawkins46844 жыл бұрын
Depending where you are in the world you can't get MP4S in 18".. if you can find a Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport that would be a good equivelant. Even Tyre Reviews rated it over the MP4S.

I have a set of 235/45/17 PSS's, and they're good tires but for something like autocross or drag, they arent because they take a bit to warm up. Switched over to 245/40/17 Kumho Ecsta v720s and they have vastly more cold grip. I havent got to really push them for an extended period to see how they handle heat, but so far so good.

I really appreciate the nuance here. You're not selling any single tire as "the best", but focusing on tradeoffs between them. One question: If you want to go for a personal record, do you practice on a more durable tire (e.g the cup 2) and then switch to the cup 2 r when you're feeling good about an attempt? Or is the performance delta large enough that subtleties you learn on the cup 2 are thrown out of the window when moving to the cup 2 r?
@RobertMitchell4 жыл бұрын
No, they’re different tires. Just go on the cup2r and do it. Generally speaking Anyone doing a record doesn’t need 40 test laps to get there. A handful of laps is enough to get to terms w car and conditions

I really appreciate your feedback on these tires, especially as I have run two of the tires on my car, a Nissan 370Z sport coupe. My second set of tires on the car was the Michelin PS4S, a great tire in all respects that got fantastic tread life. The only drawback for me was the soft sidewalls, which led to less precise steering, a more vague feeling in the steering and poorer steering response. My current set is the Michelin PS Cup 2(240). This tire handles much better than the 4S and the only drawback may be the tread life. If its lifespan is unacceptably short, I may try the Dunlop Direzza. One reason I like the Michelins so much is because of their lightness, leading to lower unsprung mass. This may be because of their use of Nylon and Aramid fiber in the belts instead of steel.

Brilliant review! I will look for the AR-1 now. I am using RE71R as they are a good deal from Costco in Canada, and are almost acceptable in the wet and great in the dry on the track. I found I didn't get huge life out of the PSS4s and they were no where near as grippy as the RE71R, despite having great wet characteristics (although not as good as the Continental ContiforceContact, which were the best in the wet bar none, but hopeless on a dry track when compared to the RE71R).

Can confirm going from ns2r to the ar1 the dry grip and feel was very noticeable with the wet grip being massively different. Safe to say it causes alot of squeaky bum moments. So the errrrrr for the ar1 when it comes to the wet is more of a no from me. Your not gonna die but your also not getting anywhere quick. I found the same for the cup 2 as well but not as bad as the ar1. Weather it just the gt3rs being stiffer and pritty cold wet conditions it was not enjoyable at all.

I have a question that you may or may not feel comfortable asking, so I understand and appreciate your decision. I drive a Honda Civic Type R FK8 that weighs in around 3100 lbs./1406 kg. I'm sure that you are somewhat familiar with the car even if you do not use them. My car is lowered about 1 in./25.4 mm. and the K-Tuned springs are modestly stiffer. Otherwise I am running the stock suspension and it handles extremely well on 265/40ZR18 PS4's on track. I have another set of rims and would like to fit them with some 265/35ZR18 tires for track use only. However, in speaking with other folks at the track, they've warned about putting too sticky a tire on it as it can overpower the suspension, which makes perfect sense. Would you have a recommendation among the tires you use, other than the PS4s of course, that could improve traction on track without overpowering the suspension on the FK8 using the R+ mode? I'm certain that I could use the NS2R, but am curious about the AR1, whether is may overpower the suspension on a dry track. Thank you for your time and have a great day!

I'm looking for a decent track tire for my Fiesta ST150, and the 595 RS-R and NS2R are my favorites.. Thanks and have a nice day :-)

Does the higher grip of those track tyres takes away progressiveness when the limit are reached? I do enjoy the car moving around a little and one thing that's stopping me from getting cup 2 are if they are snappier when they goes.
