Added - must of been a senior moment when I thought I saw another new video, it was your 1st check out ride down to Fulton Ga. I watched the 1st few minutes, I hope nobody ever wrote Alerion especially after you cautioned us not to, that would of been awful and it not only would of been ridiculously bad for you it would have shot all of us viewers in the foot too. One of the best tech videos I’ve seen! I’m having a hard time understanding some missed approach procedures. As complex as one may seem, the one at Martin State Airport in Baltimore is challenging. It’s the VOR DME. The arc goes from 14.7 to 11 at the R-68. I understand the have restricted airspace in front of it but why not just have a 11 DME for the whole segment. Super confusing.
@CorporatePilotLife

I’ve got about 5k in different Gulfstream models, and I knew them as the magic buttons that did STUFF. LOL. With the latest and greatest Gulfstreams, all you need to do is just need to think of a operation and the plane will perform it. Well, maybe not, but somewhere down the road.

Very good explanation Shaun. Is there an autopilot kill switch on the control yolk as well? Thanks, great VLOG!
@timsfun6653
@timsfun6653 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, a button on the yoke will disconnect the auto-pilot but leave the auto-throttles active. To disconnect the auto-throttles you would normally press the AT disconnect buttons on the front edge of the throttles or shut off the AT on the Flight Guidance Panel (button top left corner).

@CorporatePilotLife

There are actually 2 methods on the yoke to disconnect the autopilot. There is a designated button for it, or the most common method is to use the electric trim switch, as that disengages the autopilot.

No LOC button? So when you are cleared to intercept the localizer, you stay in LNAV?
@timsfun6653
@timsfun6653 5 жыл бұрын
That is correct. UNLESS, you are cleared for the approach, meaning cleared to descend on the approach. If you are just cleared to intercept and track the localizer you stay in LNAV mode. Once you are cleared for an ILS approach you activate Approach mode and start to descend on the glideslope.

Why there is a FL CH and not use constant SPD (selected) + ALTITUDE selection? If I have SPD selected and climbing using ALTITUDE and V/S selected will A/T not keep the selected SPD? Or you need FL CH selected while changing ALTITUDE?
@timsfun6653
@timsfun6653 5 жыл бұрын
This has to do with required power settings and the auto-throttles. With a specific airspeed and altitude selected, if you want to climb the airplane a decision has to be made about how much power to add to achieve the climb. Add a little power you get a slow climb, add a lot of power you get a high rate of climb. When you use FLCH to climb, the auto-throttle computers use max available power to climb as quickly as possible while maintaining airspeed (or near idle to descend quickly keeping airspeed). You could do this "manually" using the VS (vertical speed) mode but you'd have to guess how quickly the aircraft is able to climb (while maintaining airspeed) by increasing the climb rate until the auto-throttles couldn't add any more power and the airspeed starts to decrease. On descent, you'd have to increase the rate of descent until the power couldn't be reduced any further and airspeed starts to increase. It's far easier to just use FLCH and let the computers work it out.

One thing that was not answered here that I have always been wondering. When ATC says "Turn left heading 240", I see the dial turns to set 240 for the heading but how do you tell the aircraft to turn left to that heading and not right? I assume that it is based on the direction your turn the knob? I also assume it can't be simply that it will turn whichever direction is the shortest because I am sure there are times ATC wants you to turn a certain direction even if it will take almost a 3/4 circle to get there.
@mikeh2520
@mikeh2520 5 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty simple software decision to make a 20 degree turn instead of a 340 degree turn.
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah...it goes whichever direction is shortest. It does get trick when ATC specifically asks us to go the long way around, like that 3/4 turn you mentioned. In that case we turn the heading knob slowly around to just keep it turning in the correct direction.
@StrangerThings4Iife
@StrangerThings4Iife 5 жыл бұрын
@@mikeh2520 I realize that but there are times that ATC actually wants them to take the long turn so that is what I was asking is how to force it to make the turn the long way, the way ATC asked them to turn. I think I understand now based on Sean's response. They turn the knob slowly to force it to turn the direction they want.
@StrangerThings4Iife
@StrangerThings4Iife 5 жыл бұрын
@@CorporatePilotLife Ah, makes sense. You basically have to turn it slowly to trick it to turn the direction you want even if it the longest. I think I hinted at a great idea though, wouldn't it be better if it turned in the direction you spin the knob?

Hey Shaun, I saw the Tech Tuesday video on the Nutcracker referring to the spoilers, but do the buckets at the back of the engine cowling auto-deploy also or is that a manual function?

The Yaw dampener on/off button is located the forward instrument panel just above the pilots right knee (right next to the electric trim on/off button). It is normally left on for all phases of flight and does not turn on/off with the auto-pilot.
