Used to play that game myself on the Amiga back in the day. I know more about Caribbean geography than I know about American geography because of it. I'm surprised you guys did play the PSP version (it runs on basically anything). But man that is a great game.

The DOS original you showed was just the _original_ "Pirates!". DOS saw a release of Pirates! Gold, which tried for much more realistic graphics, not cartoony like the Megadrive version, but looking more like the art on a book cover. Kind of painterly. The DOS version of Pirates! Gold consumed many hours of my child hood which I'll never get back, but I don't regret a single one of them. As a kid, I was really into pirates. In the early 90s we were definitely in pirate country, with so many pirate themed movies coming out, pirates were all over gaming (The Secret of Monkey Island was my _first ever_ game!). Pirates were everywhere, is what I'm saying, and to play a realistic pirate simulator where you had to manage your crew, plunder, trade, do all the cool pirate things, it was fun. Even if I was an idiot child who didn't really know how to, say, form a trade route in my head by knowing what to buy and where to take it...

Good review! I grew up with a Genesis, but never played this one. Glad to hear it is worth a look! There are still so many retro games that are quite unique and some that were well ahead of their time! I look forward to learning about more lesser-known retro games with the Dusty Game Society!

I remember buying the game for PC back in the day. Honestly, the title and the awesome cover art sold me on it! At the time, my English skills were still pretty basic, so I couldn’t fully enjoy or understand the game. Even so, it was an amazing experience, and I’ve kept it in my collection ever since. Funny enough, I still haven’t finished it yet!😅😂

The version you played on Xbox I had very fond memories playing on my expensive at the time especially for me, dell laptop lols. Tons of fun roaming the 7 seas and grape shotting ships to Davy Jones locker. Pillaging the towns, making people walk the plank, man it made those long car rides, all day shopping trips that my family would go on way more tolerable for me.

for the record sasparilla -- the precursor to root beer -- was common all over the place including in transcontinental maritime trade from the 1500s to the 1800s so realistically, at least in a sense, pirates definitely DID drink root beer ( at least sometimes )

Ah… I was asking for a game to scratch the itch left by Escape Velocity, and someone recommended this game. But the story (particularly the writing along the way) was one of my favorite parts about the EV series! So, I guess the recommendation works in reverse: If you liked this game, but you would like to try something based on Sci-Fi, with a novel-like story that you can ignore or choose from several different paths with unique narratives, real-time “sailing” and fighting in a spaceship with loads of add-ons and upgrades, then try out the formerly Mac-Exclusive (from around the time Bungie was Mac-Exclusive, Cyan Worlds and Lucasarts were releasing hit after hit games) Escape Velocity trilogy! The third one might be the easiest to get working today, but unfortunately indie dev and publisher AmbrosiaSW is out of business and the game is abandonware. Escape Velocity: Nova takes what was good from the earlier games, has the best animated sprite art, largest universe, most factions that each provide their own story thread, most side quests, and probably the most to do. Until online multiplayer shooters on Xbox 360 came out, EV: Nova was my most played game.
@SwiftJustice10 күн бұрын
If you got Nova working you can download total conversion ports of the other two EVs. I've got six scenarios installed right now; EV, Override, Nova, and three total conversions of Nova, Acheron, Polycon, and White Dwarf. My EV itch is _scratched._

I remember playing this for the first time on Sega Channel and falling in love with it but everytime I went to my local Funcoland it was always priced way out of my price range as a kid, so I never was able to get it. Now I can play it to my little kid heart's content.

I played the original Sid Meier's Pirates! somewhere around 1987 on my C64 and a couple of years later I played the same game on my Amiga again. Absolutely loved it! When I bought a Mega Drive, I played the game again. I think the Mega Drive version is the best, although I have a soft spot for the C64 one. In 2004 I played the PC remake and loved it! ...Again! This is a game I have bought and played many times. Like I have done with Skyrim and Minecraft. In other words... It's a classic!

The first version of Pirates I owned was the NES port but I had played the DOS version before that and got it once my family had a PC. I actually bought my cousins the Genesis port of Gold just so I could play it at their house (Its one of many games I'm annoyed weren't ported to both the Genesis and SNES many of them ports of PC games like Pirates, Starflight and Buck Rogers CtD) I never actually owned my own copy of gold until I got the PC port on GOG a few years ago. My usual Pirates run goes like this 1: Pick a nation to ally with (never Spain) 2: Work on making myself the man the Spanish government hates most in the Caribbean 3: Find and seize a Frigate to fly my flag. Hostile is preferable but if I get frustrated I'll take a neutral, or if I'm very frustrated even a friendly Frigate. (The only times I break my Letter of Marque in games like this are claiming a Frigate or seizing supplies if desperately low) 4: Continue my quest to drive the Spanish from the Caribbean

Though the original game killed my C=64 (blew up its fuse and I had no way to get one, this being '91), I don't hold it against Pirates!. IMO, the later versions look nicer, but they took away some of the fun of navigating. No need to take sun-sightings to figure out your coordinates and then compare them to the map (or an atlas, in my case, having gotten my copy of the original game from... sources) to figure out where you were.
