I turn 60 this year and my love for video games began with a variation of Pong on my dad's Timex Sinclair. I had the good fortune to work as an arcade attendant during the golden age of Pac Man, Defender, Missile Command and the original Donkey Kong. I couldn't even begin to catalog my favorite games or consoles through the years, but my most memorable experience was seeing the joy on my 6 year old's face when he finally beat me at Unreal Tournament. That game and it's infectious soundtrack is still near the top of my list.

A few of these made my childhood. Mario Bros 3, Doom, WC II and WC III. I still check to see if there's been any Warcraft IV news every so often... I've never played an RTS that I enjoyed as much as them (although I haven't tried too many)

I can tell you for sure my favorite game in 1991 was Street Fighter 2 The world Warrior, and in 1992, yep you guessed it, was Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition. I was obsessed and Champion Edition is still one of my all time favorite games especially the arcade version. Better get your 2 quarters up on the monitor if you got next game 😂

I was born a year after you. Being that you got into Warcraft so early, I'm surprised you didn't get hooked by Blizzards other games. Diablo and Starcraft were so great in the late 90's. I did get into Starcraft actually. Just not quite as hard as warcraft. I had a buddy who I could NOT beat, he was way more into real time strategies than me. He played Protoss and used those big airships with the little drones or whatever. I came up with a strategy, I built a ton of hydralisks and upgraded them as much as I could, then had them burrow in strategic places and I kept luring him there and surprising him and taking down his ships. He gave up and I finally won! And then I quit forever so he could never reclaim his crown :P

Good choices! At 31 years of age - "Metal Gear Solid" (1998) is the greatest video game of all time, in my opinion - but I can see Half-Life as an worthy opponent for taking that year's title. It was, in my opinion, the best year for video games ever.... (MGS, Half-Life, StarCraft, Fallout 2, Ocarina of Time, Baldur's Gate, Crash Bandicoot 3:Warped, etc...).

Super love this one! Actually, I was really curious early in your videos if you ever got into space sims, and behold, Elite Dangerous. Still one of my favorite, just want more content or a nice squad to fly with. I’ve poked at Star Cit, but I don’t feel like it’s in a playable state for my wants. Fav games of every year I’ve been kicking: 85: Super Mario, of course, it’s a standard for most. 86:Tricky, when I was a Kid? Bubble Bobble, but now, Metroid. 87: Mega Man, seriously, to this day I will still revisit 1-3 on a annual basis. 88: Super Mario 3, I mean come on, there were some good games that year, but hands down the best. 89: Teris, I mean, I still had not gotten into anything other than NE for a long time, and my Grandmother and I would spend hours playing Tetris, good memories. 90: I still remember getting Super Mario World and exploring every inch of it, but I also really loved Gradius 3 when it came to the states later. 91: Link to the Past, my first entry point into “rpg” adjacent games as a child. I played this over and over, likely beating it easily a dozen times. Always chock up at the ending music, it meant a lot to childhood me. 92: For the time, I played a lot of Desert Strike. But when I got a Genesis a few years later, I learned the magic of Sonic 2. 93: Super Mario Kart, I still remember the first time I beat my brother and he yelled out a curse word. I do remember watching my father play 7th Guest too, but I was told to leave when it was getting “too scary”. Later I got Mega Man X and that is still one of my all time favorites. But, all in all, the one I still will put on my top 10 personal favorites is Secret of Mana. For little me, it was Link to the Past, plus a massive world to explore and a story. I got lost a lot as a kid, but I remember beating it and ugly crying when Sprite (Popoi) sacrificed themselves. 94: This one is VERY difficult to decide on, Final Fantasy 3/6, Super Metroid, and Donkey Kong Country were all massive for me personally. I still play all three time to time, and just finished a FF6 run alongside Resonant Arc podcast. But I have amazingly fond memories of Super Metroid. As well, I placed in the top 10 for the Block Buster Donkey Kong Country Championship. So this is just an amazing year of games for me. 95: Chrono Trigger, not a doubt in my mind. This game changed me. The way I thought about games was permanently changed after I played it. I still remember taking an old cassette recorder with a mic attachment and recording my favorite songs onto a Cassette and listen to it over and over. I still have a lot of favorites from that year, Descent was my first PC game, and made me fall in love with space games. Earthbound is amazing and a fun romp, Front Mission I still enjoy time to time. Donkey Kong Country 2, and many more. Good year for classic games. 96: Pokémon, particularly Blue. I wanted to buy Red, but it was sold out and I was impatient. IT was a good year with games like SimCopter for the PC (I know it’s bad but I loved it), Mega Man X3, Mario 64, and more. But Pokémon was my addiction for a long time, still enjoying it to this day. 97: It’s N64 times buddy, Star Fox 64 was my most played, getting gold medals on every single level and blowing my friends away with unlocking the on foot character for the pvp mode. Mario Karl 64, Goldeneye, and Shadows of the empire were my go to games for a chunk of the year too. Now, Final Fantasy Tactics is likely my favorite fro that year, but I didn’t get a PlayStation for another year or so. Dungeon Keeper was my fav PC game of that time too. 98: Honestly, looking back, I didn’t have many standout games of 98. I love a lot now, but for that time, I played a lot of my older games. Really getting into Tetris Attack. Didn’t like Zelda Ocarina much, and I didn’t get a PS till late in the year, and I got Tomb Raider, but I was no good at it. Lots of Golden eye and Star Fox still. I now adore Xenogears, but wouldn’t discover that till the early 2000s. Home PC died, but I enjoyed Star Craft a lot at my friends house. 99: I really got into my PS at this time. FF8, MEtal Gear, Tony Hawk, and more. I played Smash bros with the guys and got good at it. I loved Harvest moon and Pokémon Snap.. But the game I go back to every couple years now is Star Ocean the Second Story. Another RPG that I loved and still do. I can go on and on. From here I got into PC and Xbox. Still roamed around RPGS, loved the Elder Scroll games and so one, but the 90s games are where my heart is at to this day. Maybe I need to make a video instead of a stupid long comment that likely no one will even take the time to read. Well, thanks for the video and trip down memory lane. I appreciate this one!

9:00 yes. very interesting "weapons" :D :D :D I'm a wholehearted believer that good games from the past will always be playable while some we thought were good just because of the graphical improvements or gimmicks actually weren't that good. Like Asteroids and Mario have really good programming and physics that make the gameplay extremely varied and difficult for our brains to grasp, while some of those older Gameboy and NES games are just kind of bad copies of better games if that makes any sense. Also, it's kind of scary that we're the only generation that will ever play through a lot of those Online FPS games since hacking is just too widespread now. Some of my own notes... 1977 my birth year, Zork. 1981 was my favorite Atari/arcade game ever, Warlords. Breath of the Wild and Nier Automata are the stand out games of 2017. For 2018 I'd put Kingdom Come Deliverance at the top. 2020 was Animal Crossing New Horizons, I was depressed, lonely, and those talking animals gave me a lot of relief. My most played game of 2021 was No Man's Sky (released in 2016 but now really, really worth the money and time). 2022 my most played game was Pokemon Legends Arceus, honorable mention to Splatoon 3 which I've put ~350 hours into already. 2023 not sure yet but there's that Zelda game thing coming out in a few days and then Starfield not too long after.

I played some, River Raid, Super Mario, I played some of those PC simulators with airplanes, don´t remember the name and many car games Test Driver (1st PC game), Indy 500 and World Cirtcuit. Lemmings, Castle Wolfestein, Doom 2, X-Wing x Tie Fighters, Warcraft (?), Age of Mithology and many Need For Speed, specially older ones, CoD many of them. GTA 3, SA and VC, (4 and 5 not even close on the play time), Nowaday Playing Forza Horizon 4 and 5, and need to play this Ciberpunk.

2017: "This wasn't a great year for games that I was interested in" Wow. We are very different. I'm assuming TechDweeb isn't a fan of the Zelda franchise (one of my absolute favorites), judging by the fact that *none* of them were on this list. But even ignoring Breath of the Wild, 2017 also had Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and Prey. Amazing year for gaming, probably one of the best in the last couple of generations.

I’m pretty new to Retro Gaming outside of the bonafide original hardware. Wow, we have played and been impressed by so many of the same games. I remember the first time playing HALO and being stunned by a game on a console that could be so Cinematic and beautiful in so many ways. I also remember going to a computer show (major geek hangout) and watching some guy play the original Tomb Raider on a PC, and thinking "Oh man, what a great world they have created." No one really cared that it was so heavily pixelated. It was the game play that was so cool. The only games that I would have to have on my list that would be different from yours is Diablo in 1997, and since Diablo was released by Blizzard, the next year (1998) I bought the PC game Starcraft. Oh man, that game just blew my mind and was so incredibly addictive. I would sit at my PC for hours playing that game. It was like chess on a whole different level. BTW a coworker wanted me to join his team in Warcraft with him and his wife. At the time the game was already getting a reputation for being highly addictive and people were calling it "Warcrack." I declined his offer because he almost got fired for falling asleep at his work cubicle! Another great video as always. Hey you are over 20K subscribers! Good for you!

I had a buddy in the same situation, he didn't care enough because there was too much to do. My suggestion was to ignore all the side stuff and just go through the story. Just do the story missions. Don't bother buying a different horse or upgrading your guns or skinning animals or any of that stuff. Play through the story, and if it hooks you then you have a ton of side stuff to spend time on once you're invested. The story is amazing, SO worth playing through to the end.

For some reason I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing and replaying Morrowind, Gothic 2: Night of the Raven and Oblivon and have never managed to really get that into an RPG since with the exception being the first 2 Mass Effect games.

I turned 55 this year. Back in the day, that would have meant I could retire. Ah good times! LOL. I was 14 when Asteroids came out and, let me tell you, you're not wrong in having it on this list. Compared to what came before, I was absolutely obsessed with this game and so upset that I didn't have the disposable income to play that thing as much as I wanted to. Arcade games are not a particularly pleasant memory for me because they were just an exercise in futility. For the vast majority of people they were far too hard and far too expensive. Good riddance to a sadistic and greedy paradigm in video game development that, frankly, took way, way too long to finally die 🤣

you are younger then me 3 years, at that time i was having a nintendo famicom and the best games on it are popeye and hunting birds whith a dog catch i dont remember the name we play it with a gun at that time i wanted to get a Sega mega drive but my parents didnt buy it for me and in modern games i like dead or alive2 i like fighting games that have adrenaline i enjoy theme more

Just reached the end of the video :) There was only two points were I cried out for justice internally. :D 1997: Carmageddon, and in 2019-2021: Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Days Gone, Death Stranding (not in this order). This later three gave me such an escape from the pandemic like no other. And I can't believe I've missed ME for so long, has an awesome story. Otherwise I'm not a console gamer (not considering the retro consoles) so I couldn't argue with those, haha :D
