This is basically the same analogy I tell people about the Jiu-Jitsu journey. Here are the cliff notes from my "what is Jiu-Jitsu like, and what can I expect?" talk. White belt= infant, you will spend lots of time laying on the mat staring at the ceiling and taking unplanned naps. (joking about the naps, just tap!) Blue belt= toddler/grade schooler, you stumble and fall a lot. You find everything interesting and challenging at the same time. Purple belt= middle school/ High school, You got this! Most stuff comes easy but life still piles on some hard lessons and you realize there is lots yet to learn. But you are finding your niche. Brown belt= college/higher learning, You found your path (maybe) and you have the drive and the tools to take on most anything thrown at you ( with some help from seniors). Black belt= Adulting, This is very easy and way hard at the same time, you can change your path at will and can handle any challenge with confidence and grace. When people say Jiu-Jitsu is life, they are true. The journey parallels real life very well.

I don't really like the belt system and I think it does more harm than good, but my recommendation to every white belt is above all to learn the basics. I mean - can you shrimp properly ? are you relaxed while rolling, can you even breath correctly ? Do you know how to mount and grip ? For me Bjj is like a language and those stuff(and many more)are like its alphabet. You cannot learn to make words and complete sentences without knowing the letters first.

I went in thinking I might be better than some white belts (because I’ve had many street fights and messed out with some friends before with grappling) but I was literally the worst in there and I probably got tapped around 20/25 times by different people during rolls. I’ve never been smashed like that in my life and now I want to get better a lot more than before I took this first lesson. P.S the skin on the back of a few of my fingers has started to scrape off 🤦♂️.

The difference between an arm bar being an arm bar, or being nothing might be something as minute as a wrist being rotated 20 degrees (thumb up!) or your knees aren't pinched together. They teach these simple moves, and after 50 drills I'm still not checking all the boxes. It's like the proprioception I thought I had is non-existent. But when everything clicks, it's sweet. This is a problem I’m encountering - I moved to a remote country area in Australia (for family reasons) as a purple belt. I came from a great gym with lots of higher belts to train with. I was faced with a problem when I moved - either stop training because there was no where to train, or create somewhere to train. I love teaching but often it can be information overload as I’m constantly looking for solutions and solving problems for my students. I sometimes feel my own game suffers, but overall my knowledge base has gotten better, and I find I’m trying things I never would have (before I started teaching), because I’m always looking at things to make my students game better, and by extension my own game

@jessemillar22935 жыл бұрын
Chewjitsu, thanks heaps for the reply. that’s something I have considered. I’m currently doing 3 adults classes a week. Next year I’ll likely look at doing an extra class, likely called a fundamentals class, which would then free up my other classes to teach more advanced stuff. By then, some of my guys who are currently sitting between 1 to 3 stripes will be needing to expand their game much more. I’ve got a couple of guys already at 2 and 3 stripes and we often work on some more advanced stuff during our open mat session which is really useful (for both of us). It’s a bit of a juggling act - making sure my new guys are getting good amount of fundamentals while guys who are progressing are getting more exposure to advanced techniques. I try to travel up to see my coach (2nd degree black belt who lives 2 hours away) as often as possible too which is great when I’m there

That's too bad. I'm injury prone myself. The gym I've joined won't let white belts roll until they've practiced for 30 sessions. How's your diet? High inflammation is a huge part part of injuries and healing, and I've noticed massive improvement by doing overa fitness workouts (Spartacus, specifically) and eating better. Guns aren't always applicable. If you just shoot a drunk in the face because you think he's about to swing on you (or even does swing) you're probably catching a manslaughter rap at best.
@fredrick4435 жыл бұрын
@@Deocto Its hard. I'm not really injury prone - I've been in full contact sports my whole life. My diet is great. I'm a little old but that never stopped me. I wont shoot a drunk in the face or pull any other garbage move like that..... Like I said, I have been doing other martial arts my whole life and have been around guns just as long. My dad was a Kenpo instructor. The big problem I have is I live in a smallish town with two gyms. I started at one and there was a guy (blue belt) who was just intentionally trying to hurt me. Dragged me around the gym trying to set an arm bar I wasnt giving him and even dragged me off the mat, in a half set arm bar and rammed my head into the base of a basketball standard. I think I had been there maybe a month, and it was always something with this guy. I really have never seen anything like it in a martial arts setting, where the instructors were just ok with higher level people hurting lower level. So, I went to the other gym and withing 2 months I had cracked ribs, a torn labrum, and I am waiting for an MRI for my other shoulder. The cracked ribs were from drilling!!!! Not even rolling, and it was done by a guy who was "an instructor who isnt an employee". I dont even know WTF that means! Haha. I mean, oh well, I cant learn Jiu Jitsu, and I know that other people have way different and positive experiences..... I just left pissed off that I was injured.... Again. Anyway. Have fun in your training. In glad you found a good place. It seems like it can be a lot of fun if you find the right place.

@@fredrick443 that sucks, man. I've only been training for a month, but it is really like a super power (as I always seem to say). Thats pretty ridiculous that a blue belt would go hard on a white belt like that, and that they'd allow it. I've heard some gums were super aggro, and some people love that. I'm 36 and work a blue collar job. Though I look forward to competing, I do not want to get hurt and can't miss work. My gym has more kids and women in it than men, and everyone is super nice. Sometimes too nice. I'm trying to drill with intense focus, and they kind of want to sit and bullshit between reps. Sounds like I need a happy medium between what you've found and what I got. I hope you get a chance to join a gym that suits you at some point. That injury list is downright frightening.

My school has a club for jiu-jitsu, their system of training is super fresh they have only been around a few years. The instructors are both blue belts yet at times i feel as though they are teaching way too watered down techniques almost to the point that they are not viable. Also they are strict on not rolling until you have at least two stripes on a white belt. What are your thoughts?

Blue belts teaching..... I feel sorry for you bro, stay away from injuries tho.

Nah you can roll since the first clases and sadly while not the norm sometimes blue belts lack of much experience to teach, they might be monsters in competition though.

Nothing will ever be obsolete in jiu jitsu. The moment you believe that a technique is obsolete is the moment you start tapping.

But when you get flipped on a Judo, explain Rolling better. Dont get belts twisted. Some people have training elsewhere.

I've grappled for ten years. There was no BJJ in my hometown. Now there is. Really funny to wear a white belt and start from scratch. So yeah I'm a white belt...........

We have a guy at our gym who got his blue belt last week, so he's got like 2 years of bjj but he was a high level collegiate wrestler and he's able to beat brown and black belts about half the time just with wrestling and a killer hug choke

Good Morning Professor. Professor , what are your thoughts about martial arts falling into the wrong hands? I know its very rare, but there are those who learn martial arts for the wrong reasons. Some people learn martial arts primarily to pick fights and beat people up for fun. Even though it's rare, it does happen. Please tell me your thoughts professor.
