9:58 the answer is kinda easy, especially if you have a phd??? just shade every square diagonally (top left square you shade the top left corner, top right you shade the top right corner etc) and then you have a diagonal (diamond shaped) white square in the middle...
@strawberryslice282621 күн бұрын
I think the difficulty comes from how a person looks/thinks about things. Someone might understand it and the solution right away, while another could be stuck thinking about how 2 small squares = half of the big square, but there's not a way to shade them in a way that makes a square. Also, another person could understand that it's possible to do what the question asks, but not know the best way to do it. I do agree that the solution is easy, I just wanted to share why some people (like myself) might find it difficult at first. (I'm genuinely not sure if I sound like I'm arguing against you or correcting you, so if it does seem like that, it wasn't my intention)
@chulacharlie21 күн бұрын
I legitimately took the time to figure it out and I was going to post a comment but decided to scroll down and see if anyone else also figured it out.
@portermcdowell905221 күн бұрын
It's difficult if you try to make it a number problem, such as fractions of 3 squares leaving the fourth with 1 extra square of corner. (Example that makes a square but shades more than half: Top half of the top left square, right half of the bottom right square, top right 3/4 filled in by overlapping the halves of the two other shaded squares. This creates a square with the entire bottom right square plus some, but shades more than half.) Presumably, some fraction of a smaller square would create a corner that shades in half of the bigger square leaving a medium square in one corner. I did figure out the length of the medium square's sides, the square root of 2 (in smaller square side legnth units), meaning you could also use a compass and a straight edge to put the answer in the corner.
@nikkospelledlikethat814020 күн бұрын
Wow that is. Way simpler a solution than what I thought of. (I was thinking that if each smaller square had a side length of 1 then the area of the big square was 4 units^2 so half of that would be 2 units^2 so draw a square with side length sqrt2. Which is technically what you would get by your method just with more numbers involved and less… what should have been obvious logic to me.)
@gizer-bs19 күн бұрын
As a person who does a bit of math, the question should be pretty easy for someone with a phd no matter how you look at it.

The 'geometry' question at the end doesn't actually seem to be testing any mathematics skills, but rather linguistics, or general literacy, even if the former was the sincerest intention - the execution of the wording and presentation of the square itself were just too deliberate to seem like a purely maths-focused question. In other, more succinct words, it's one of those stupid questions that is meant to trick children. The question just doesn't tell you are restricted to shading only entire subdivisions, and it also specifically asks if the examinee can shade 'it' (singular) and not 'them' (plural); the four smaller squares are thus entirely pointless to the final solution, and only serve as a visual guide to draw and shade four corner right-angle triangles to achieve the conditions of said question.

I know this probably wasn't meant for it, but I know how to answer that last question: You take a straight line, construct a right angle on it, and halve the angle. Then you copy the side length of the square onto one of the legs and construct another 45° angle on it (make a right angle, then halve it). The two 45° sides will meet in a 90° angle, and will have the same length, and that length will be sqrt(2)/2 times the side length of the square. You can then copy that side length into the square and make a sub-square with that side length somehow (many ways to do it), and shade everything outside the sub-square. That way, you get a square that's exactly half the area of the original square. Nobody ever said you had to shade the full sub-squares, right?

9:24 So does that mean that Vampires can only withstand a certain amount of UV light, and that during the day, it becomes lethal amount? If that's the case, Vampire hunters wouldn't need a bunch of complicated tools to beat vampires, just a really powerful flashlight. Something like an Imalent SR32, that thing can light up an entire mountain range. I'm sure a guild of hunter could just manufacture even more powerful flashlights.
