Well I've found myself a couple of times where I needed to plug an ethernet cable in my laptop to test a connection going to a router for example. So yeah for tech guys/girls that ethernet port might come in handy :) and since the Thinkpad brand is aimed at tech people in general I think it would be a good addition :). Just my 2 cents
@adipratia68612 ай бұрын
True. But I also saw a wifi router which can be configured from a smartphone app dedicated to this. So, no ethernet port needed.

well for such rare cases you can have usb-c dongle and use it twice a year, unless you are network admin in huge corp which does it everyday, then yeah it makes sense to have it integrated into laptop directly

Lovely. I must say this is a great idea. Using this makes sense.

ThinkPad majorly aims corporate clients, so yes Ethernet is a deal breaker

Being a ThinkPad I'd love to see removable RAM, SSD and even CPU. If all of these things are now integrated, I'd love to see a removable SOC

I work with networking and like to have a thin an light I can take to my client's premises. Having an ethernet port is super usefull but I can always carry a dongle with no issue in my backpack

same i just prefer having the port so i don't need the dungle and sometimes I would use the lan + a donggle when needing to be connected to 2 networks at once
@juri141119968 күн бұрын
sadly no. a usb dongle cant replace an internal pcie connectet network card.

as a network technician a ethernet port would be great for quick troubleshooting when on site without a dongle but I am used to a dongle now so it would only be a bonus on top.

Yeah, x86 looks like it's about to walk all over ARM via Intel's Lunar Lake CPUs this October(?) that seem to have similar if not better efficiency while not sacrificing compatibility. Checkout Dave2D's coverage. An efficient x86 CPU is ARM's worst nightmare (when it comes to the Windows and Linux devices world) and the efficiency issues with (at least Intel's) x86 CPUs look to be a thing of the past once Lunar Lake releases. Fingers crossed AMD has a CPU that'll feature similar efficiency gains.

Very excited to see laptops with lunar lake, it seems like a great chip for ultrabook style laptops with a great set of hardware accelerators for common usage tasks.

I'm in IT. Sure, end users don't need the ethernet, but I sure do. Matter of fact, I'm traveling right now and constant testing network ports and carrying a dongle is just a hassle when I know the ThinkPad is thick enough to have one of the collapsible one. Please bring it back, Lenovo. So to answer your question, IT bros pretty much still needs it for our day-to-day jobs.

8:18 - “Many applications still aren't optimized for ARM architecture on Windows”, well as a Linux-user, this would be rarely an issue, in fact, I am looking for a proper Linux laptop, and since the Penguin runs everywhere (sigh…), what I need is just a reliable machine with a battery that runs “forever plus a day”, and this fits the bill nicely. I am writing this comment on a Raspberry Pi 5 which I use as my main desktop computer.

whats your opinition of that laptop for drawing (e.g., autocad, sketchup, rendering, ps)?
@guillaumelairloup59282 ай бұрын
You can't always rely on a wireless connection for specific usage (video editing, ...). And for remote reinstallation with PxE. And what about 802.1X? Ehernet port is still important!

I use my laptop more as a portable desktop than a laptop, so in my case I would much prefer wired, especially with the instability of certain (mediatek) wifi cards. For a laptop that I intend to use as a thin and light for maximum portability I would probably prefer a thin laptop over an ethernet port (usb-c adapters exist, fyi).

I can pardon your incredulity towards Ethernet ports. Presumably you're unaware that in 2024 they are 2.5 ~ 10 GigE by default, and wifi bandwidths are usually half or less their advertised speed due to overhead. For a business laptop Ethernet is a huge thing, even for the home office.

If there No Ethernet port then is a No for Me. Ethernet port has a solid connection. Don’t have to worry about speeds dropping.

We need legislation to ensure that ARM PCs and laptops support standard UEFI booting. Locked down devices must be outlawed.

Ethernet is a non-negotiable port. Though I also consider non Intel powered ethernet ports to be non-existant on x86 laptops.
@Alpha87132 ай бұрын
Wired networking is important for initial setup (PXE boot, although these ARM machines might not do that, anyway), network troubleshooting, and connection to networks that are not available over wireless (e.g. a storage or BMC network). It is also useful at a desk when wireless coverage is spotty or when one needs high reliability. Wireless is really just a convenience feature, and not the solution to every problem.

WTH! No Ethernet jack! I see that you do and have never worked for a large organization! How in the world am I going to image the laptop? I also have had nothing but issues from using Ethernet adapters using Type-C. It will probably work, but it is never guaranteed. Also not having an Ethernet port makes it difficult to troubleshoot network connections at desk. Also I know hard line WILL always work. Still even in 2024 Wireless is not as reliable as a hard lined network connection!

I work in a large organization and use a mac book not a thinkpad though. Never had a problem with connecting the ethernet cable via the lenovo docking station.
