Here Im going to teach you the best methods and why you would choose one over the other when propagating pothos cuttings. Both methods work great but result in a different style pothos configuration. After watching this video you should have a better idea why you would choose either method.
Propagating Pothos is a fun way to gain additional plants and share with others.

Whenever I propagate something I'll do two special steps. 1)I'll cover the bottom half of the clear container because roots grow towards darkness and prefer it. 2) when the roots get long enough I sprinkle a little of the soil I'll be planting them in about a week before I plan on planting them

@@TechplantChannel You may know but if not - pothos will do alright in a dim area just so long as there is some light and the plant is well watered and fed. Shot glass, great idea to hold the leaves out of the water!! Pothos were one of the first plants I've propagated after I got into propagation and succulents! I love seeing how well their roots form, and a nice learning experience for the kids also... My children love planting and learning new tricks for each plant. I've been gardening and propagating for about ten years now and I don't see an end date any time soon lol... When the roots start to develop and they get the clear slime around them, I've tried leaving it (the slime) on, and also taking it off, and in my own experience, when I take off the slimy film, (very gently using a damp paper towel, pulling downward to the tip of the root) the roots seem to grow faster than when I leave it. A full 2 days sooner. Thanks so much for this video, it's very educational.

Thanks Rachel and Gustavo - I'll give this a whirl
@bserna3673

The roots are longer in the shorter clippings because the plant doesn't have to expend the energy to nourish the long vine, only a shorter, smaller plant. The longer vine doesn't need longer roots, as the entire vine is being nourished by several new roots. Also, once the long cutting is rooting, you can cut it and have several cuttings like in the other example.

Actually, it probably is related to the fact that the single leaf cuttings are a plain green pothos, so with a lot of chlorofyll ergo growth power vs the bundle of marble queen which has a lot more varietion ergo is a weaker plant/grower.

Thank you, I learn't something new from your video, no one else compared the two methods of cutting the stem. I propogate & grow pothos alot and have a heavenly lush arrangement in my office and home. I prefer the dense, thick appearance as opposed to thin & leggy and I've learnt by experience that misting the leaves with water causes new leaves to sprout and I also place a glass dome on top of the plant pot when I have just inserted the cuttings. It creates a humid environment for the plantlings, I don't have to water, the cuttings establish themselves in no time and new shoots/leaves also sprout abundantly.
@TechplantChannel

Techplant Hello! I was excited to share a new discovery about growing pothos in water. I cut several leaves just underneath the node and arrange them in an artistic bunch before immersing in a jar/vase of tap water. I even use elastic bands to keep them in bunches. I change the water every 3 days and this causes faster root formation. I recently used warm water from the tap and the roots and several new shoots of leaves formed even faster! I think it mimics the hot humid climates that pothos naturally thrives in. Another thing I noticed is if the roots are somewhat constrained (in both soil and water containers) several new shoots of leaves are produced faster as apposed to roots growing in a larger roomier container. Large, lush arrangements of pothos look so beautiful in the room and are psychologically so pleasing. Even visitors, colleagues in my office like to talk about the pothos!

Thankyou for taking the time to show the progression of growth over a long period of time. That was very helpful. I know it means having to plan out a video a long time in advance but the resuts made it a much better video that is relevant actoss time and shows the viewer what to really expect.

Today seems like the perfect day to take some cuttings. My string of hearts was over 3ft long & I finally took some cuttings for new plants. Now I'm going to tend to the pothos, which is a big bushy plant with lots of long pieces! Almost to the ground! I love days like this...so relaxing.

I like the way you observed everything that was happening It would have taken a lot of patience to put this clip together and I appreciated the time lapse/updates. . I have a cebu blue clipping (rare in my country), so I'm doing method #2 after watching your video. One in water, one straight in soil and one in sphagnum. Gotta hedge my bets! Now I know how long I will have to wait for the roots. I might tie a black sock around the class jar, so I can remove it to see the progress of the roots, but keep it in darkness.

Excellent video~! My Mother plant is 30 years old, and I have created so many new plants from it. (like you do). I use both methods. However, lately, I have been using moist Sphagnum Moss, to propagate them. Have you tried that?

When I propagate, I intentionally let the cut callous over before I put it into water to prevent rot, etc. and seem to have about the same growth rate. Also! when I go to pot cuttings that I've rooted in water, I like to sort of coat the wet roots in with dry dirt, it seems to make them a bit less fragile during the planting process.

This was really helpful. I ended up putting cuttings into my existing mother plant to fill her up and have more vines. She just had 2 big vines. I didn't do it the best way originally but I'm learning as I go. I just watched this video now and took 3 more cuttings from 1 long vine to hopefully make another hanging pot for my kitchen.

I have been growin pothos from the cuttings for while now and have been learning so much ! A leaf had actually broke off and it was so healthy and beautiful I mean for real this leaf had no long or stem anything it was just a little stem that leaf comes on 🍃and some reason I couldn't let it go lol so I stuck in small pot with soil and it grew 2 other leaves in few weeks and is now a full little plant with 6 leaves in 2 mths! These plants are amazing beautiful plants that you can grow so easily ! I can't believe it

One day i repotted my pothos in one long vine, turned out i made them stressed and dried. So i cut the dead leaves and let the vine hanging up (i thought that it could be the guide for it to climb up). After few weeks, new leaves are growing from the nodes on the dried vine (which i thought was dead already!!) and forming new vine in new direction!! So do not waste the dried vine guys! Just keep water it and it will grow back 😁

Just starting to do this with cutting from my mother in law. I want them to eventually sit on top of my 10 gallon aquarium on the hood with the roots into the tank. I think the roots would make the tank look really cool and not to mention it would help take out the nitrates in the water. Very cool plant. It would be cleaning my air and my tank water.
