I say it once in the video, but just to be clear, the first set of AF tests is at 18mm f/2.8 and the second is around 23mm f/3.2

Man I think imma pick up the X-M5. It’s too cheap for how good it is with open gate. Think it’s a great entry option for a lot of people. Thanks for help selling me on it dang it 😂. Would you say the imagine quality is pretty much exactly the same as the XH2S?
@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
Just based on what I shot for this video I think they are close. F-Log2 with sharpening and NR turned down still produces a very sharp and textured image and what I'm seeing from the X-M5 looks pretty much like what I'm used to on the X-H2S. I think the only real difference will be how the much faster readout of the X-H2S affects rolling shutter.
@cammackeyАй бұрын
@ oh interesting I’m I’m wonder if in order to save it from overheating they slow down the read out speed but were able to keep up on the dynamic range and noise control
@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
@@cammackey I don't think so, it's just the sensor itself is slower. You'll find the same rolling shutter performance on all the cameras that use this sensor. Whereas the X-H2S is a stacked sensor with a much faster readout. That's its whole thing

@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
@@stuartsilverman3797 Fuji says that AF updates are coming for the rest of their lineup, but I don't know when. Hopefully in December. I really don't use the X-T5 for video except for talking head type shots, and it works pretty well for that, IMO. The X-T5 has too many limitations to be a great video camera, IMO. For photos, I think it's pretty good. Not great for fast action but I've used it for portrait shoots and live events, and it's worked fine

X-H2S has a 14bit readout in 6.2K and 4K, great dynamic range and best in class rolling shutter. The X-M5 uses the same sensor of other cameras, like the X-S20, so we have a 12bit (and much slower) readout, less dynamic range (12.1 vs 13.6 at SRN=1). Not exactly the same. Obviously we need a more contrasty scene for evaluating DR and more movement for rolling shutter. But I think even in your tests, with low contrast scenes, some differences are noticeable. But obviously all of this depends on the eye of the beholder too. Am i saying that X-M5 is bad? Not at all. It’s a small gem of a camera, for the price and in its category. But the X-H2s is in another league, a sort of (relatively) poor man Alexa.

It might be a youtube compression, but it seems to me that I see the artifacts in the shadows on XM5
@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
Not sure which part you're looking at, but keep in mind that the first round of comparisons, the HDMI info out capture is much lower quality than the internal recording. And the second group of recordings, I turned the noise reduction settings to their lowest values

So, I'd definitely say that artifacts are a result of YT compression. However, there is definitely noise in the image as the base ISO in F-Log2 is 1250. In the latter example, I did ETTR a bit so that I could lower the noise, so, IMO, it looks pretty clean viewing it on my computer pre-YT compression.

I just ordered the ZVE-10 the other day and had no idea this camera existed until this week. Crazy thing is the XM-5 is only $100 more. I haven't tested it yet but I still have 30 day free returns. Would you say it's a big difference in quality overall?
@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
I've never used the ZV-E10 but I know people love it. The autofocus is probably better than the X-M5. I think you'll be happy with it, plus, I've heard that people are having a hard time getting a X-M5. Seems like yet another camera Fujifilm can't produce enough of.

What lens would you recommend for bird photography. X-M5. Thank you.
@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
I mean, the XF150-600 is THE choice for birds but it's way too big for the X-M5 handheld. If you are buying an inexpensive camera so you can splurge on a lens, then the XF500mm f/5.6 would be amazing. More sensibly, people love the XF70-300 which would be much more manageable size, weight, and price-wise but obviously lacking on the long end

I don't know why anyone would shoot video at 1.2 or 1.0 anyway it looks terrible In my opinion. You also reduce your lens sharpness as well. Video guys don't think about sharpness much but lenses are sharpest at about F3 onwards ... I think we're getting to a stage where it's getting usable which is good and that's a good sign and hopefully the next update they can tweak this to nail it
@EyeofkamauАй бұрын
Different looks for different shots. It’s beautiful and makes sense for some shots, while also being capable of taking away from some shots. Just depends on the shot & story. As far as AF tests at that shallow of a DoF, I guess that’s just done to further test the AF.

@EyeofkamauАй бұрын
@@nevvanclarke9225 100% agree 👍🏽
@PhillipRPeckАй бұрын
I don't disagree, mostly. Again, the point to test AF at such fast apertures is to really TEST the AF and show what it's doing and the AF should work regardless of the aperture. Also, I think the main practical reason for f/1.4, 1.2 and even wider is low light. For event photographers/videographers, having these fast lenses is the difference between clean images and noisy images. I think the trend of extreme Bokeh is mostly social media driven and probably ignored by professional photographers/videographers anyway. They understand when and why to use a really fast aperture
