Checking Columbia Mine after yesterday’s rockfall

24 hours after hearing a rockfall down the main shaft, I roped down to the first level to check for damage and try to locate the fall.

radios don't work too well underground. most miners and other spelunkers use wired telephones if they need to communicate with someone on the surface.

It wasn’t that risky. I was only one level down on a small drift that I was already familiar with and had given them a time limit after which, if I wasn’t back, they were to call rescue. And I did have a respirator. Those are standard for Columbia. That section has really good airflow though.
