Ted is an actual coaching GENIUS. the fact he came up with a highly effective game tactic on his own for a sport he barely knows anything about is next level smart. granted the tactic had been invented in the 70’s. but the game has been around for a century at that point. he’s only known the sport for only 2 years at that point.

The old Jamie would have been offended but it shows how far his character has come that he is humble and able to laugh about it with everyone.

Total football also demands incredible stamina and speed, which would require the adoption of doping techniques. Plus, the spanish tiki-taka version basically required pressing so high that 'defense' consisted of immediately fouling the enemy team if they ever got the ball because the defense was so high up losing the ball was extremely dangerous. Don't get me wrong, Total Football is a very cool concept that can help you win. Just laying out the other realities that helped it become the force it was during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

One objection: The Dutch were absolute favorites in the World Cup final - the Germans were the underdogs. And the game started exactly as predicted, until the Netherlands were in the lead and started getting arrogant, trying to humiliate the opponent. The Germans got angry, the Dutch lost intensity and momentum, the rest is history.

what a load of nonsense, "total football" is what normal football was for everyone (and still is for kids all around the globe) before teams became businesses, hired an army of staff like coaches and developed their positions/strategies around a simple game. Just hilarious how the fan(atic)s try to pin a name to one of the most basic ways to play that game. thousands of games were played that way long before someone made up a flashy name for it.
