@@-JaggedGrace- it's not so much about what sounds good or not, it's about taking chances... one's more inclined to take chances and try something new and different when it's for themselves vs for other people, and there's always going to be greater fulfillment attached to that whether it sounds good or not... with other people, one might create something more in line with what they know the masses would enjoy, vs taking the risk of producing something off the beaten path that might not have the same reception amongst the masses... it might still sound good but it just won't feel as good... when one stops caring about such things, life becomes a lot more enjoyable.

Well, it is unfortunate that you have not been able to reach a strong state of flow while simultaneously caring about the world around you. To do so, one must simply be capable of shedding all outside concerns during (emphasis on during) the action/whatever it is that one is paying their attention to. All outside concerns are dropped to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the human doing the task. (Shed all your concerns for a limited time, then come back to reality and care for your loved ones when the action/task you were using flow for is finished) P.S. When humans are legitimately in a state of "not caring" as in the circuitry in their brain that regulates emotion is removed or destroyed leaving one incapable to attach feelings to thought or thought to feeling, there is not a single sense or reason to perform any actions such as paying attention for them for they truly are incapable of caring for anything. Flow is when one is able to use the machinations of the human brain to focus and hone in on a particular target without letting the focus falter from distractions. Successfully reaching flow is when human and task alike are synergetically in motion, in other words, their focus is so disciplined during the flow-state that distractions are unable to hinder the action the human is doing.

I've seen in a few videos of actors sharing their experiences with being in front of a camera for a movie set vs. being in front of a live audience like in Theatre. Some people prefer one over the other, and vice versa. It's some wild stuff.

I feel like Joseph is intuitively tapping into something much deeper regarding how powerful of a tool attention can be. If we take Jungian psychology and shadow work, which is the basis of the most successful models of therapy imo, it's essentially controlling what we pay conscious attention to, and bringing forth into consciousness that which we do NOT want to pay attention to (aka our shadows, the parts of us we resist so much we don't even identify with) in order to integrate them, and Joseph bearing his shadows and wholeheartedly owning them so openly to a very large group of people is a very powerful thing. Which is why group therapy or partner programs like AA (or church, really) work so well. When a large group all pay focused attention to the same thing and keep each other in check, deep synergy and transformation can happen that are greater than the sum of their parts, but both externally and internally in every individual. So I hope no one takes this to mean attention is a bad, evil thing that we should never desire. it's just a powerful tool that you can remind yourself you always have the choice to direct.

I agree with you about the transformational power of a community that focuses shared attention on a particular aspect of life (like AA, Church, and I would add human rights groups, etc). And to your point about paying attention to the thing we *Don't want to pay attention to, I have found community essential to the process of developing self-compassion as a therapeutic tool. I can't imagine how one can exercise compassion if they don't receive it or watch someone else recieve it. Which again requires paying attention just as much as accepting attention.

It all depends on your motivation. If my job is to bring awareness to a worthy cause, then seeking and attracting attention could be a selfless and meaningful act. It could be more of an act of giving than simply paying attention. It all depends on whether I'm craving attention for the benefit of myself or for the benefit of others. Paying attention to something that brings no one else any value could actually be more of a selfish act. Again... it's the person's motivation that matters. Is it selfless or selfish?

I really needed this. I've been burnt out in my acting career for this exact reason: how the industry and the majority of people in it prioritize attention and social media traffic rather than the quality of their work and the fulfillment and authenticity of their art and personalities. At first I was feeling inadequate for prioritizing my mental well-being and artistic expression as opposed to whatever else was doing. Ppl are literally addicted to their social media accounts because it makes them feel validated and “heard”...ie, attention seeking. I walked away from FB twitter in 2014, from IG two months ago. I have Facebook and Twitter, but I just don't post much on them. I mostly use them for staying up to date with news and keeping in touch with friends. The last time I posted anything on my Facebook page was probably 6 months ago. I have them, but I just don't use them to try to get attention that much. You don't necessarily need to delete them, you just need to not depend on them for attention.

I think most artists would love to give their undivided attention to their work, but the "getting" of attention so often determines who has enough confidence or money or resources to live within their creative flow to begin with. Attention means more than just the great feeling of being praised -- it is a gateway to survival, wealth, and power. It's no wonder that we descend into competitive practices within our creative industries, because we still have the fear of going hungry beneath it all.

I feel like I really needed this TED talk. I've been feeling like everything I write and compose only existed to et me attention and to make people like it. But the songs I like the most are the one's I wrote about something that wasn't meant for a bigger audience. I've been (and still am) so wrapped up in competing that I'm losing my art over it. Joseph is one of my favourite actors and it is wonderful to hear him talk about something that is so important to all artists.

How are things going right now? I mean, I tried to quit it for a couple of months and understood how much time I used to spend on it. Without it I was happier and focused, but somehow I later realized that Instagram it's not as bad as it seems: ig stories are terrible, you spend tons of your days on them so when I turned back to Instagram I stopped watching them and instead tried to focus on what was on my feed. Now I'm pretty satisfied with this social media
