If you live in a place where everyone tells you to give up and everyone wants you to do what society expects of you, even if you feel your life is not fulfilling, leave. I am currently in my senior year of high school and I am feeling pressured by tons of people to become an accountant or a businesswoman, despite how much I insist I hate the idea of managing someone else's money and life. It is only because of my role models that I have kept up my determination to do what makes me happy. Once I can legally and financially do so, I am leaving my toxic environment and searching for a place where I feel like I am loved. I have even started to consider making sure the car I buy when I can drive has large enough storage area for me to live in it because I cannot find a place to live in once I turn 18 yet. Your life should be about being happy, not about pleasing others, so don't surround yourself with people who don't want what makes you happiest.

+Phantomhive At the same time, be careful, because you shouldn't expect other to be there only to please you as well. Since you can't achieve happiness on your own, you'll need other people to help you get there; so help but don't please, is more the approach. Other than that, you have a great outlook on things and I wish you nothing but success and joy. I also wish I had your view when I was your age. Take care.

***** Great! I don't know what you plan to do as a career with your interest in history, but whatever it is, I wish you the best of luck. And remember, you will stumble and fall a few times along the way, but if you keep getting back up, you can prove everyone else wrong and eventually do what you have been dreaming of.

+Pantomhive "The masses of men lead quiet lives of desperation" dont be the masses. You know whats best for yourself if you dont know what you want to do find out like now. Most people go through life not knowing what to do so they listen to others. Fast forward 10 years and most people wonder why they hate there jobs. Also dont be one of those people who are waiting for a message from god telling them what there supposed to do. Experiment find stuff out and one you find something you love to do learn as much as you can about it.

So late to this TED Talk, but this is an inspiring video. It goes to show that we can find our own values in life if we know our values, unique strengths and experiences. I've always pursued many different titles in my life, never knowing what I wanted but what others wanted from me. By being around better friends and leaving behind bad influences, I found what I really wanted and am truly happy to be living my life! They helped me find what I truly wanted. RIP Scott!!

It isn't an issue if young people following their dreams, its an issue of many young people having the idea that the only way they can be happy is by being a celebrity. Like there's hardly any work involved...they're just special therefore they should be famous. Many are going to be very disappointed. I'm glad my daughter's dreams involve doing for others instead of done of these diluted self obsessed kids who think the only thing that matters us making themselves happy.

Once I had a choice between 2 jobs: one I knew would have been fun and interesting; the other I knew would be difficult but very useful for the future career I wanted. I picked the 2nd one, and I regretted it for months afterwards. It was difficult but I sticked to it. Then I started to like it, I quit it and got my dream job. Not only that choice allowed me to get what I wanted but it taught me that I could overcome any type of difficulties through work and dedication. Sometimes you need to have a mid-term vision of what you want, if taking uneasy steps allows you to get closer to your goal/smtg better - from experience - I'd say "go for it". Nothing will be as perfect as your mind shapes it when you imagine it, you have to make the best of any opportunities.

"If we don't know what we're looking for we're not going to find it". That's probably my favorite line here. The problem I have with the notion of a "dream job" however is that people are looking for this: a job that is not difficult. Not necessarily true, but if you flit from job to job thinking, "this doesn't fit me", what you have is not a bad job but a lack of willpower and patience. I'd just hope for people who want to find this "dream job" that it's your dream for the sake of the good you hope to do with it, and not what is going to make you most happy. Why not? A good and challenging job will not be happy all of the time, it comes with as much suffering as pleasure. In focusing on attaining this platonic "happiness" I think one is more likely to ignore their unhappiness than do anything about it: allowing it to grow. Isn't "happiness" an optimistic delusion?: that of a possible absence of strife in life. There is no end to strife I think, including that permanent one that follows the mind, that permanent dissatisfaction, never content to sit with what it has, craving creation and productivity. Rather we may be happier (in feeling), more excellent (in conduct) and more wise (in thought) and begin to make that lemonade out of the lemons of life. Remember: Aristotle wrote his whole Nicomachaean Ethics on "eudaemonia", that continuing act of happiness and came to a final conclusion. That wisdom with virtue is the worthiest goal in life, followed by virtue alone. So we see how happiness, virtue and wisdom are always related.

i honestly need this. these few days, I've been so stressed out with finding jobs. i have graduated last year but i still haven't find jobs that i love. and people around me kept pushing me to just take any jobs either i love it or not. one of my friend said 'just take the job, it's better than not have a job at all'. it was hurtful and i got so stressed. i just wanted to do what i love, like open up my own business. like a book or library cafe. and it seem stupid to some. but i just love books, it's my passion. is it so wrong to pursue my passion? i hope i'll be able to do it one day. i know i will.
