I've heard someone here in Florida suggest that that may be the reason that we have seat belt laws here in Florida but got rid of helmet laws for motorcyclists. Insurance companies want people to wear seat belts because it's likely to reduce medical bills when people get into car accidents but helmets increase the amount they pay in motorcycle accidents because people are more likely to survive. Of course part of the reason was motorcyclists complaining about wearing helmets, but insurance companies would have fought getting rid of the law if they were going to lose money. Sports are a lot different than traffic accidents though since people are more likely to have less severe concussions that cause chronic problems but aren't often extreme enough to actually cause death. Helmets may protect the skull bones, but give a false sense of security when it comes to injuries from movement inside the skull.

For example, a soldier with PTSD hearing rapid gunfire or a rape survivor reading a descriptive rape scene. The term originated in psychology and was popularised in fandom culture and discussions about sexual assault in the late 90s/2000s. Of course, you could argue people are too liberal with using them these days, but regardless, nobody in the comments as far as I can tell is 'triggered'. @QuantityEngineers8 жыл бұрын
I think a helmet with a thin comfortable lining with an exterior layer of soft leather (circa 1920) would stop a large percentage of concussions because no one is going to head butt some one else wearing this type of helmet. Modern helmets give players a false sense of safety. Start at the youngest age and set a regulation that states a team cannot play if they use regular helmets. Advance the regulation every year and the players will learn as they grow to protect themselves and others. In 17 years it will be normal and head butts like the one in the example video won't be happening.

Jonatan Mendoza I didn't refute the point because it was so stupid that it didn't warrant a refute. If you want to increase the player's awareness of their actual limitations, you TEACH IT to them. You don't give them less safe equipment, and say, "If it feels less safe they'll take less risks." That's literally fucking retarded. Because guess what, not every person who plays football is a rocket scientist, and some will play just as reckless, regardless of what they have on for pads. And even IF, everyone was trying to protect themselves the right way, that doesn't stop accidents from happening, and then when accidents happen, you're sitting there with a stupid look on your face as you realize that somebody is sitting in a wheelchair as a vegetable for the rest of their life because you thought it would be a good idea to give them a shittier version of a helmet than what could have been available to them. If you want to know how I think these issues should be solved, look for my actual comment on the issue elsewhere in the comment section.

Your presentation was very informative, Dr. Camarillo. Thank you and your team for this needed effort! When I boxed on our California high school boxing team, complete with lunchtime bouts, and the annual "fight night", my parents had the unfortunate experience of watching me get clobbered, after 3 knockdowns. My dad, who was then Chief of Internal Medicine residency program at a SF hospital, brought home an article from JAMA for me to read. This was in 1981 or 82. The article showed a walnut shell (representing the cranium) with a pea inside of it, the pea representing the brain. The article then went on to describe the whiplash effect that occurred, even with boxing headgear. I appreciated the information. I continued to do some sparring even on my college campus, but the sparring was light in comparison to those bouts. Today, I do have memory issues that startle both me and my wife, and my employer. I take statins, and asked my doctor if these statins could be contributing to my memory lapses. He recommended an evaluation, which is pending. My biggest concern now is my 10 year old daughter. She loves sports, which I encourage, but I will do my best to ensure she reaps the positives from such healthy activities, while minimizing any adverse consequences. Thanks again for the work you do!

So basically as of right now, what they seem to think is that the shape of an NFL helmet, along with it's size, is not sufficient. The shape is insufficient, because when hit the wrong way, like in the clip he showed, the head can be rotated the wrong way, causing a whiplash motion. And the size is insufficient, because there is not enough room inside the helmet for proper padding to help the deceleration of the head immediately after the collision. But simply increasing the size of the helmet will likely not do any good, because a larger helmet means a larger target, making it more likely for the head to be involved in collisions that a normally sized helmet today would not cause. What is probably one of the best solutions is a new material for padding, one that can compress to better fit a curve for decelerating the head, at different levels of impact. As for what the CPSC should do in the meantime, is to create a model for what proper head deceleration should look like during impacts of certain speeds. This is something that even I could do, given a couple of accelerometers. This way certain materials that are used for helmet padding can be federally regulated to protect against different levels of impact (i.e. low speed impacts to high speed impacts). This is already something they do with the helmets they regulate today, when they test for helmet stress and impact distribution.

@jakestine4753 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. In Football you get dinged hundreds of times in a short career, quite often on plays where no contact to the head even occurs (pure whiplash of the core body can cause a minor concussion). In horse riding, you fall maybe dozens of times in a lifetime and only a few of those falls result in getting "dinged" in the head, let alone a proper concussion.

I've never seen a horse wearing a helmet.
@thelolminecrafter78305 жыл бұрын
So based on what I understand (and please correct me if I'm wrong), the 'whiplash-type phenomenon' happened because the impact initially only influenced the part of his head that was hit, causing that particular portion to go right as the rest of the head 'lags' behind and tries to catch up. As it 'lags', more of the head is gradually pulled along by the site of impact, resulting in his head rotating left until the rest of his head caught up with the sight of impact and dragged it to the right.

Doctor Jones - I agree that shoulder tackling does indeed help prevent concussions, and thankfully we are seeing more of it in the NFL. However, one of the elements of a tackle and its effect on the brain is the near-instantaneous, high G change of direction that occurs in a hard hit. The brain is travelling in one direction and in millisenconds it suddenly is moving in another direction. I just watched a hit in which the tackler made a good, clean hit with his shoulder, and didn't even hit the other player's helmet - but that player had his bell rung, and said that he saw stars, or lights and lost his memory of the events leading up to the hit. So good shoulder tackling should be taught and practiced, but how is the problem of the high G change of direction movement solved?
@footba11fan41ife6 жыл бұрын
incorrect dude. basically 90% of people who ever played football little league all the way to pro have a form of CTE. You’re trying to say all those guys had bad tacking form? What about all the people that only played offense with CTE?
@samuelmorales23446 жыл бұрын
In such a competitive sport like football, there is no "proper" tackling technique. Sure some tackles are "safer" than others. However, you can get a concussion with no direct head contact. Two players running into each other at 20-25MPH from opposite directions can concuss each other simply with contact to the body. In competitive football, the duty of the defensive player is to knock out the offensive players off their feet and make sure they are down. The offensive tackle same thing. How do you think Junior Seau became successful; he was a violent player. It is a bit moronic to even talk about playing tackle football safely. That is like saying boxing could be safe with proper punching technique. The nature of contact sports is to inflict a certain kind of harm on the opponent "PHYSICALLY". It is the G-Forces or really the deceleration part that causes damage. When you are moving or traveling at high energy, then suddenly stop, that is the problem. Falling to the ground, that damages your brain, body-to-body contact at high velocity, that damages the brain, NHL players getting slammed into the wall, that causes brain damage. People talking about safety in inherently damaging sports is just silly. I would again compare it to boxing, people get sad when there is a dead boxer then suggest all kinds of ridiculous things like constant MRI scans, cognitive tests between fights without admitting the sport is just inherently dangerous and the only way to eliminate it is remove the blows to the head but they ain't having it. The difference between a boxer and a football player is one wears a helmet and the other isn't. The rules are different but both are violent sports.

People can say any sport may not be worth it. We can come up with examples for not doing lots of activities based upon risk. We don't have to drive cars either. I so much wish we could test for concussions with better science rather than observation. I hope the day soon comes. The prevention by not participating argument can be taken with any endeavor where someone may be injured. As far as science, if we bring it into the discussion, there really is not enough science by scientific method - yet. After the fact analysis is too speculative. We have to come up with better real time diagnosis and methods before claiming a position around concussions. Fear can skew science. Money does too. Common sense tells me maybe I shouldn't take a chance and participate in lots of sports. It's a lively debate, but some people love boxing, football, hockey and on and on. And yeah, you don't see rich kids boxing. There's another thought.

Concussions are part of the game. Also, you don't need concussions to have brain damage. You can have a brain injury and not feel a thing. Driving a car is not intrinsically violent. We don't intentionally crash into other cars or objects. The intent of driving is to get from point A to point B as safely and as fast as possible. The goal of contact sports is violence, to inflict a certain kind of harm on the other player. Big difference.

True, helmets don't prevent concussions- at all. They are important however to limit deadly skull fractures. Technically, you do not even need to impact your head on the outside to get a concussion inside. G forces, very hard braking even roller coasters can give you one. Actually do be afraid. 3+ years later and I still have symptoms. You don't want one. Clearly NO to football and very clearly NO to all bikes. A person can be left permanently fatigued, physically and mentally which is no fun. Sleeping issues, permanent vision impairment, and permanent cognitive deficits so bad you can't work- even when you were previously a high performer and provider...yet ironic and frustrating, you will likely look just fine on the outside. There is actually not much hope IMO IF you are severely injured. Yes, many will improve but many will not. I was in the middle group. Doctors, including brilliant researchers offered very little hope. They throw you away basically. They label you and try to throw meds at you- it's all they can do (next to nothing.) That is standard practice sadly- make a buck off of you even when they know they have no tools that work. They understand more in 2022 than they did even 10 years ago but treatment is still extremely limited. DO NOT RUSH to get back to play too early. Years later and my balance is still off. Vision has something to do with that. You are far more likely to bang your head after an initial concussion- technically speaking, you are just off. I didn't believe it but it is true. You never, ever want to get a bad concussion before the first one has fully healed. Sorry my comment isn't more positive- just keeping things real. Yes, you can sometimes get better- I did to some degree over "years" however by far, the best approach is to avoid banging your head in the first place.

It is a misconception that biking causes more concussions than football in youth under 19. When you control for gender (much fewer females play football, but they bike just as much as males) and control for age range (most youth do not start football until about 10 yrs old, but youth start biking much sooner), then you see that football definitely leads biking in the number of tbi's. This information is reported by the CDC.
@MotorcycleGearHub5 жыл бұрын
The issue with a football helmet is that it needs to sustain repeated impacts (in a single game) without the helmet losing its protective performance nor shape/fit. The solution to avoid a concussion is already there: use a, literally, motorcycle helmet, which uses a different type of much-thicker much-protective foam. Problem? Said protective foam in a helmet is only good for one hit to the head, so a player would need to go through dozens of such helmets in a game. Ergo, the solution to avoiding concussions is there; it's just not practical. This all leads to the question of, why should an individual expose himself on a weekly basis to the huge risk of not just one but MULTIPLE concussion-causing impacts in a single game. Don't get me wrong, I like American football and also competed in the sport of rugby. But perhaps the solution to this big problem isn't improving helmets (already improved enough) but, rather, to stand back for a moment and try to objectively see the whole picture of what happens in a football game. Don't want to change the game or rules of the game to spare players from concussions? Fair enough, then enter at your own risk. It's the same with motorcycles, but we motorcycle riders are, at least, wearing way-more protective helmets and only need to use their protection once.

Smashing into the other player or smashing one's fist into the other player's head IS the sport. You can't make it safer. Now we will see who cares about others and who cares about having the fun of watching the game. Because it can't be both...not anymore. Not since we learned about CTE b/c of that wonderful brain doctor Omalu. You're right DTF, it's a lot of little hits that sets this disease in progress. Also, I believe this David guy is getting paid by the NFL, notice how slimey he is at not really saying anything and saying emphatically that a helmet or something WILL be devised to absolutely protect people like his kid. So not to worry now? This won't be solved, our bodies can't absorb a lot of 'hits' to the head without ruining the life of the poor person getting hit. PERIOD...This guy is not a doctor or a scientific researcher with a PhD. He's a hired gun. Remember how much $ is in football and how hard they've fought to keep CTE out of the news. They'll act just like big Pharma and big Tobacco, they'll lie and lie and lie. Read about how they treated Dr. Omalu and others who discovered this disease. Many will continue to have their lives ruined by playing these sports and their family and their families too. The ripple effects will be gruesome and unnecessary.

Well I hope there is some miracle helmet someday because I have been having issues from Down Hill MTB concussions. I’ve had 3 so far and the last knocked me unconscious for 15 minutes and broke my Bell Full Face Helmet all the way down the middle. The lense came out of my goggles from the impact. Anyway I have developed anger,depression and short term memory loss. I get nauseated at random and have chronic migraines. I did Karate for 15 years before I got into Down Hill and I was kicked in the head a lot during sparring competitions. I truly believe I have CTE but won’t know until I die one day. So I hope helmets due improve because Down Hi like Football and other sports is dangerous BUT it’s fun to do when your not wrecking. Every sport has inherent risk.

A sacrificial gel insert as an alternative?? This is kind of infomercially to me. Comparing repeated sustained brain injury events from certain sports and relating the impact to once, twice or never in a lifetime type cycling injuries is a bit of a stretch...

I had understood it was 3 sacks in one game. Not shown is NFL med. insurer on sideline with aloe drink, bone saw and anoxic glue, spare brain and shock mounts.
@purplegill106 жыл бұрын
joecugo actually it's the opposite. Generally you can fully recover from a concussion with enough rest but repeated impacts cause the brain to deteriorate over time due to the buildup of tau proteins in response to the repeated impacts.

Doesn’t the Motorsport f1 have helmet braces that significantly reduce concussion rates? I remember seeing cars virtually explode with the driver succumbing little to no injuries.
@brentruss63645 жыл бұрын
Head and neck restraint. Plus a carbon fibre F1 car disintegrates on impact so a lot less of the kinetic energy actually reaches the driver. 'Soft walls' and big run offs. They learnt the hard way ie. Dale earnhardt

@rustybeatty65673 жыл бұрын
Motorcycle helmets are far superior and safer than bicycle helmets because they encompass more of the head and neck area and that can reduce the risk of concussion and the padding is also better because motorcycle helmets have to pass through tougher testing procedures and requirements and standards.

I have an idea that is similar to what the speaker has demonstrated on the video's, to prevent concussions, why not create a full body suit, with clear plastic, that protects the whole body, to give it impact balance!

what if Helmets were soft on the outside and inside and the hard part was in the middle? This would allow the outside to absorb impact then the inside would absorb less making less whiplash.

Seems like young brains are much tougher, you often hear of older people hitting their head and dying from a minor fall yet a kid can get hit in the head ten times harder and recover from it.

So basically, the sport of boxing which in of itself is designed so that opponents knock each other out (give themselves the best possible concussion) is out of the question here. Because if it is included, then the sport is over. Nobody will watch a boxing match that has 0 chances of a win by knock out (specially after so many years of it being a popular sport based on this violent trauma). This brings a lot of issues and questions. Because who is to say, that just like a boxer who willingly submits him/herself to this brain trauma (to the point of it being socially acceptable), that a football player can't also make the same decision of risking their life/brain for the sport they love, etc? Why all the drama when it comes to the game of football when in the same country we are used to seeing worse in a rink? IMO boxing would be an even better place to study advancements in any brain-saving technology. Because if we can help that, then the majority of other risky sports will be easier to deal with. Just my 2 cents.

Where’s the update? This video was posted six years earlier? And are you SERIOUS about allowing your children, any children, to play full contact football? Football needs to be banned in the USA for more than the reason of concussions leading to CTE. Wake up!!!

That part of the jaw there's a nerve, in boxing you use it to knock someone out and in ninjutsu you use it too. He might have got no concussion, the hit there could have done that. It sends a big shock to the brain when you hit a nerve EDIT: but you have scans and pictures showing differences within the brain so nevermind

Tanks have explosive armor platining where, when hit, it explodes outward... Maybe this could be done with (several small) airbags on helmets too: an impact of X force would cause the airbag to depoy outward... Just an idea.

Ok but if damage to the corpus callosum is largely responsible for concussive symptoms, why is it the case that split-brain patients do not show concussive symptoms, and largely carry on with their lives as normal?

I think they know very well how they can be made, but we're not just talking about a violent shock, here we're talking about the momentum aka rotation potential it gives to the brain, depending on what spot it was applied on. Typically he said that concussive damage was much less observed in forward-backward movement than left-right
