Having an intermittent issue with the air handler. The thermostat kicks on and the compressor and handler turn on and air starts blowing from the vents. The blower motor will stop for a few seconds and then start again. Sometimes it does it once or twice and sometimes not all. Ultimately, it completes the cycle and the thermostat shuts off. I had a reliable tech come and take a look and, of course, the system ran without any issues. He verified that the thermostat is fine and believes that it is most likely the ECM control module. He said to let the system run as is as there's nothing wrong with it. He did show me how to replace the module and it does look very easy. Just wondering what your thoughts might be on this. Thanks.

It's not very complicated, I bench-test the X13, 2.0, 2.3, 3.0 and EON motors every day for homeowners that had a "technician" tell them it was a bad motor. Normally the result is the motor is fine and the "technician" is an idiot that doesn't know what they are doing. I see so many people that have air conditioning contractors licenses but wouldn't pass a basic competency test.

My brother handles most of our HVAC, I usually only get involved when there is complete new wiring or complex smart systems need setting up. We're have both come to the conclusion that the small efficiency gains of the X13 motors are completely obliterated by their absolute unreliability.

Those x13 motors have a bad reputation some good they work off 24v from the control speeds are pretty simple the module on the motor outlast the itself in most case, they dont have a start capacitor that's where the module comes into 24vs from control board is what tells it to there are 2 models a 120v motor and 230/240 so when it has a call to come on from the 24vs off the control board it basically completes the the primary voltage that makes run and sometimes the factory speed settings are off allitle ,the simple to check is take the module off and check the 3 leads on the back side of the if there is resistance between one or less there is a winding issue on the motor itself you can also check the leads to be sure it is not grounded to the what would the motor shell most of the time the module is good and the motor ends up having those x13 motors sometimes run near $400 depending on where you the module itself cost $200 to $300 depending on where you get them as well I live in Springfield, mo, I recently had to replace our x13 motor we ordered it off ebay for I believe $229 so still not that as well,I called a supply company named stone parts had them instock,they wanted $449 which was incredibly too expensive which I turn led me to a cheaper route, I do like the capacitor type motors the best, you can convert to capacitor type however the x13 is very easy to install and troubleshoot that's the only reason I went with original replacement but not you almost have to have a doctors salary to afford the x13 ,yes they have bad things about them and good as well ,but there is good and bad about any product, I love watching your videos you have a lot of knowledge and tricks of the trade stored in you head I'm just a journeyman hvac person I've done installs on new homes exx. Sometimes when stumped on an issue I find one of your many KZbin videos and learn something pretty much daily,I know this was a really long comment i just wanted to throw a few things i had been i may be wrong on some informative if i am could you please let me what it was and clear up what I may been wrong on,thank you have a super day

Once replaced a psc with a evergreen, cause the customer was a tree hugger, my god the instructions, do this do that, let the motor learn. I tell customers now, energy savings won’t be beneficial, just put it towards a new furnace, with a actual variable speed fan.

That sure was a clean air handler. And that x 13 sure did last a long time. I know it was only because it was a gentek. And it's too bad you can't just buy the module for that motor. If you could have done just the module, it would have taken you less than half the time.

Why on earth are these ECMs failing so darn quick?
@tomdolan88115 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t agree more! I have been replacing components on the circuit board inside the 2.5 ECM motors for the last few years. With the release of the ECM 3.0, the manufacturer has re-designed them to be unrepairable but maybe more reliable. Only time will tell. The motor in this video is the updated 3.0 version and it failed. I use to say they were engineered to fail. Now I’m inclined to say they’re simply under engineered to be a long lasting dependable product.

Tommy Sawyer In a lot of cases they are continuous torque motors which means they will try to keep and maintain the load regardless. Even if the filter/evap coil is dirty or there is some kind of obstruction. Basically a lot of times they ramp up to try and keep up and burn themselves up in process. And that’s not to mention the circuit boards inside them that are susceptible to power/lightning surge from utility. As an HVAC tech I replace these ecm motors almost daily. Also a lot of company’s like to do strait changouts which means replacing existing standard unit with no duct modification, and slap a high SEER unit in.(Generally more efficient units require much more airflow than a standard system) I really don’t think there is a problem per say with most ecm style motors but rather lack of education on how they should be installed. I still prefer pfc motors lol. And I’m in no way an expert, but just my opinion from my experiences.

X-13s are junk. Almost every one I have installed was changed out within 10 years. That is why the manufacturer extended the warranty on those motors to a 10 year free replacement part.
@ZERO-F2G-5 жыл бұрын
My company has only had one X13 failure in the last five years out of several hundred installed. But then we do manual J,S,and D on every new construction install, and on replacements take many static pressure readings to determine if the duct system and or filtration need changes modifications etc. X13 motors are quite reliable when working in proper parameters, but the do die an early death when expected to deliver against very high TSP conditions.
