To Greenway followers: 8-80 Cities tools include transit-- Don't take away our rail service to create a bike highway for the rich. Here is a quote from Gil's brother Enrique: "Do we dare create a transport system giving priority to the needs of the poor? Or are we really trying to solve the traffic jams of the upper income people? That is really the true issue that exist?" Please work with and not against Santa Cruz County for the betterment of ALL citizens, not just cyclists!

Bike-use is promoted in cities where car-use (incl. parking) is becoming a luxury. In other words, not negating the ideals, but the real incentive is to save money and time in cities (centers) by using bicycles.

+26H That's an interesting observation. Have you considered that correlation doesn't mean causation? Most major cities make biking more viable because places of interest are closer together. It just so happens that because things are so close together, space is at a premium, therefore parking is expensive. Therefore people could, and are, being driven (pardon the pun) to lean more towards biking as a mode of transportation for reasons other than expense. Of course, in relation with your point, some cities are increasing costs for parking meters and parking spaces as an incentive for people to walk and bike more, and drive less. What are your further thoughts?

He shouldn't go to Copenhagen, he should go to the Netherlands, where everything he talked about has been already done for thirthy years. The Danish are just good at blowing their own trumpet and inflating their statistics by only counting the commutes to work on bicycle and so everyone is going spastic about Copenhagen, but in the city of Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands, SIXTY percent of ALL trips are made by bike.
