Caleen Sisk is the Spiritual Leader and Tribal Chief of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, who practice their traditional culture and ceremonies in their territory along the McCloud River watershed in Northern California.
Since assuming leadership responsibilities in 2000, Caleen has focused on maintaining the cultural and religious traditions of the Tribe as well as advocating for California salmon restoration, the Human Right to Water, and the protection of indigenous sacred sites. She is also currently leading her Tribe's efforts to work with Maori and federal fish biologists to return Chinook salmon to the McCloud River.
Caleen is also a leading voice in raising awareness of the poor human rights conditions suffered by federally unrecognized tribes and unrepresented indigenous peoples around the world. She is a regular speaker at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York where she has campaigned for the U.N. to study the plight of federally unrecognized tribes in the United States. She is also the Spiritual and Environmental Commissioner for ENLACE Continental, an international network of indigenous women. Strongly rooted in her spirituality and her family, Caleen cares deeply for her Winnemem people and for oppressed people around the world.
Caleen is interviewed by Marc Dadigan, a freelance writer and photographer who has worked the last 15 months as an immersion journalist at the Winnemem Wintu's village of Tuiimyali. He's also currently working on a book project about the Winnemem Wintu's spiritually guided struggle to survive for Foundry Media in New York.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).

10's of thousands of years of history and not even 1% is taught in American History classes in US public schools. Native American history needs to be taught in public schools as American history. THEY should be the focus of our history not Europe. I say this as a 100% white American. Quit white washing history. Indigenous history is extensive, important and undervalued. Their contribution and knowledge needs to be recognized.

I love the fact that they have kept the salmon genetics alive, that's smart of the hatchery. I would hate to see what the taxpayers bill would have been after this costume ceremony though. Just guessing it was at least half a mill, maybe more. Had they been spending their own earnings, great, but that was my earnings being spent, it's hard for me to "feel it" like they were.

The money used by tribal governments is not pulled from the federal tax reserve. Their funding comes from the interest that accumulates on the funds and lands held “in trust” by the US government. Unfortunately, like you, most Americans are unaware of the financial realities of the rightful keepers of the land they illegally occupy.
