Normal people do not like different
These words given by one of Dr. Khurram Sadiq’s patients sums up how people with #Autism Spectrum Disorder feel like. Today, 1 in 56 people are diagnosed with ASD and the male ratio is 4:1 to females. In this talk Dr Khurram points out why this ratio is actually 1: 1 and why women are in the same level of danger as men.
Dr Khurram Sadiq is a Clinical Lead Acute Care in Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and a Consultant Psychiatrist in Crisis Team Basingstoke. He is a Public Speaker, Blogger, Vlogger and a Leadership coach. This is the third TEDx talk of Dr Khurram, where he tells us the stories of #diversity in people’s life and the workplace, the challenges of raising a child with ASD and why
It’s not about knowing Autism, it’s about understanding Autism.

In my work I have met many Autistic women who were misdiagnosed with all kinds of mental illnesses over the years and felt lost that nothing was helping. It was such a relief for them when they finally received their Autism diagnosis because finally the world and all of their experience made sense. Sadly, the mental trauma and mistrust in the medical industry from years of misdiagnosis and ill-fitting treatments will take many years to work through. It is great that the understanding of Autism is growing so that next generations won’t need to experience this.

The diagnostic abilities are still very limited, there is a lack of skill set leading to misdiagnosis and no training is provided to upskill the workforce , the senior management of NHS is concerned as to how to tackle it and yet not making any inroads to tackle the issues ….

Some people will never truly understand what it's like to live with Autism but if they can at least learn to be accepting and show kindness that's a huge step in the right direction.

I didn't know all the stuff about how the senses are affected, but it makes so much sense now why people with ASD become overwhelmed so easily. Imagine already struggling with something while there's some irritating sound that no one else seems to be hearing? You'd feel like you were going insane.

As I get older, friends who were ‘different’ are now being diagnosed with ADHD and Autism. They all see their diagnosis as an explanation for why they never quite fit and are relieved but are also sad that it took their entire life to get it.

For so long the idea was that people who were neurodivergent had to be trained and learn how to fit into the world. Now the dialogue has shifted and we, the majority, are learning that we are the ones who need to be trained in how to accept people who are like us. I feel this shift is a sign that humanity is evolving for the better.

What i loved about this is that you have taught us to embrace our differences and respect those for who they are. gave me goosebumps - what every human wants (and deserves!) is to be seen .. and so many amongst us, go through life misunderstood and judged, put into boxes and restrictive labels ... thank you for enabling this change of lens, and a rethink on being better, doing better, especially by those that have been let down systematically ... a game changer for communities to recognise the innate potential that exists in our midst, to be able to nurture and enable them to their truest possibilities ... thank you, truly!

'Normal people do not like different' this statement gave me goosebumps and also sleepless nights thinking about it. change has to happen at a grass root level, communities, educational institutes, work places all inclusive ...Media can play a strong role which it does not choose to but I am glad to have started a movement where people around me whether be family, friends or colleagues do understand the concept and spot it, will continue to work towards replicating these models to infuse insight into our society ...

I worked with a man for six months without knowing he was on the spectrum until his last day. When I told him I had no idea and just thought he was a little kooky he was so happy he cried. This is exactly the type of visibility ASD needs right now. So many people out there claiming to be on the spectrum in the same way they used to say 'oh I'm a bit OCD' like, no. You're not, and your behaviour is just making it more difficult for people who actually are.

This guy just discribed me and my life to a T. After falling 25 ft. Broke my spine in 7 places including my C-1, split my sternum in half, broke 9 ribs and ripped open my carotid artery. Then woke up..got up and walked a half mile to my truck, then drove 8 miles for help. My brain refused to except the condition of my body. I’m not sociable at all, not married, but yet I’m a highly successful business owner and single father. I recover from my injuries and got a medical all clear at 9 weeks recovery. Every step of the way my brain willed my body to become whole. My survival odds were less than 1%. 5 ft of titanium later nothing stops me.

Many people criticize the increase in diagnosis rates and claim that it is all a big fraud. I believe it is because we are becoming more attuned to the full spectrum of how ASD presents and aware that the narrow version of what is ‘normal’ is being challenged. I am excited to see how the world will change for the better as Autistic people are encouraged to live true to themselves.
