This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Being the Chess Player and Not the Chess Piece
How Pedro De Abreu raised himself from poverty in Brazil, arrived in America with no English, became an entrepreneur and was accepted to Harvard.
Pedro De Abreu is an entrepreneur, author and scholar. He was born to hardships in Brazil and moved to America at 15 without knowing any English. Since moving to America, he has won the prestigious Leadership in Education Award by Harvard University, the New Century Scholar Award by the USA-Today and the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Darla Moore Emerging Leader Award by the Darla Moore School of Business. Pedro has started a business, a non-profit that teaches chess to children, published a book, and has his own segment on WLTX News 19, the Motivational Minute . In 2012, British publishing house Marshall Cavendish featured Pedro, along with 24 entrepreneurs from around the world, in the book Young Entrepreneur World: How 25 Teen-Trepreneurs Succeeded and Left World Leaders Scratching Their Heads.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My teaching philosophy is based on my thought that education empowers and you are proof of this. I remember meeting you at the New Century Scholar Award ceremony and I feel that day has introduced me to several intelligent and innovative peers that continually make me proud to be an educator. Keep up the great work and inspiring others!

Wow... I stumbled upon this on accident. Such a great speech. Such a beautiful story and this is such an American story, too -- coming from nothing and making something out of yourself. Absolutely amazing and inspiring. I will be sharing this video with all my co-workers and management team tomorrow. I am sure they will heck of inspired like I was when watching it. My sincerest congratulations to this young man. I wish many more could be like him. I felt his passion, his energy and humbleness giving thanks to others, too.

Wow. The parallels between our situations are insane! Except I'm currently in the "what if" stage you mentioned. Yes, it's toxic. My issue is health problems that keep weighing me down, and not much of a support system. I'm wanting to study Neuroengineering at Harvard and/or MIT eventually, but I still have awhile to go.
