Was laid off yesterday after working for the same company for 15 years. I started at the very bottom and worked my way up to 2nd in command. In one brief moment, it all ended in the name of "downsizing". I took a lot of pride in my work but being laid off made me realize that your life isn't supposed to be about a job. Life is meant to be enjoyed and be way more meaningful.

I got laid off, searched and searched and never landed anything (after a year). So, I decided to start my own business. I knew absolutely nothing! I made that business last 3 years and learned more than I did in the 15 years that I had a fancy corporate job. Unfortunately that business is coming up a little short on the financial front, so I have to re-enter the workforce soon. But, I wouldn't trade it for anything. And now I have a nice little side hustle, and a totally different perspective on everything.

Bottom line: corps expect. No, DEMAND, loyalty. They consider paycheck a form of a charity/handout. They have established a "we against them" culture, and the best way of dealing with this environment is to NOT get emotionally involved and not expect anything that's not going to happen - no matter how much time and effort you invest in your job, you'll eventually get chewed up and spit out.

Getting laid off is often seen as a negative and painful experience, but it can also be a powerful wake-up call. It makes you realize how deeply entrenched you were in a system that relied on you to carry out tedious, underappreciated work without proper recognition or reward. When you’re the “donkey” in the system, driving things forward but being met with little more than insults or indifference, it’s easy to lose sight of your worth. Being laid off gives you the space to step back, reflect, and re-evaluate your path. It’s a moment to understand that you are more than the role you held and that your true value goes far beyond the tasks you were performing. This shift in perspective can be liberating. It allows you to understand your strengths, rediscover what you’re passionate about, and set new standards for what you deserve in your next position. When you move on from that situation and enter a new job, it’s like stepping into a different game with fresh rules. You bring with you the lessons learned from the past, the awareness of your worth, and the confidence to advocate for yourself in ways you may not have before. Your next chapter can be better, where your skills are respected, your contributions are valued, and you are finally in an environment where growth is possible and supported. Being laid off can be painful, but it can also be a catalyst for transformation and self-discovery. It pushes you to find an environment where you are appreciated, where your work has meaning, and where you can truly thrive.

I was laid off last week and I immediately started to applying for jobs and unemployment. I was ignoring my emotions until it got to the point where now I have applied for over 40 jobs. I now have been struggling with guilt, anger, and feeling like a failed which is something I was not use to becasue I have been so career driven. I wasn't perfect but I always improved and helped as much as I could. Maybe I wasn't happy, maybe that affected my mood at work. I didn't feel fulfillment and didn't like being the bad guy to people or dealing with terrible people. I worked in management and thought me and the other guy were very open and worked very well together until it happened out of the blue and told me what the reason was and that the paper work was already filled out and done. So there was no explaining on my side. Now I'm struggling between the choice of getting stable as fast as possible to continue what I was doing or taking the loss, Going back home, and finding something I rather do/ a career change. I hate feeling and I hate that how hard I worked that now it won't even be a reliable reference for a job employer. This video helped a bit and hope I can figure it out before something else goes wrong. I always enjoy ted talks but this is one of the first times I have watched one on a topic that hurts me and others so much.

I entered the job market just before the Pandemic after graduating with my BFA in Illustration. Thing is, being a creative requires that you work jobs unrelated to your profession while funding your actual job as a creative, at least where I live on top of paying off student loan debt. Started off working a part time job at an automotive dealership for a year, managed to find full time work as a courier for Covid-19 and Cancer patients before getting laid off. Once office jobs started opening back up, I tried to apply full time, but only managed to work part time again due to lack of experience at a college. Four months ago, I finally landed a full time job at a clinic. I surprisingly fell in love with my new job, as I managed to incorporate my experiences as an Illustrator and Graphic Designer from my Graphic Design internship, and my administrative experience from by two previous part time office jobs. Even better, I finally managed to strike a deal with a book publisher to publish my current and future work as an artist and writer! While it doesn't cover expenses, I was living my dream life... and I just got laid off at the job I started falling in love with. Currently in the process of finding a full time office job again before collecting unemployment. I swear, feels like I can't have nice things and just enjoy myself. This was nice to listen to while job searching.

Practically everyone in private industry is getting laid off because we are now in the gig economy, aka the alternate work force (contract jobs, part time jobs, temporary jobs). The latest statistic is that 94% of all new jobs created is alternative work force work.

Facts, at the end of the day you can get another job. But your friends and family can never replace you. Keep on moving my friends ‘ On to the next one ‘ !

I must be the only person who doesn't see the "good" in getting laid off. It financially and psychologically ruined me. I have severe social and performance anxiety, which makes *getting* a job exceptionally difficult. Once I *have* a job, I can try to "push through" the mental burdens I was beset with, but that initial barrier to entry is definitely significant. No amount of pep talks will change that.

Your feelings are very understandable. I am struggling in the same way. Would you consider developing a spiritual practice? There is so much as individuals we can not control. This type of practice may help. God bless you.

I'm being made redundant but luckily I've learned to not get stressed in these situations. A company restructure essentially rug-pulled my crucial role out from underneath me and I was earmarked for redundancy without the decision-makers even looking at my abilities to deliver solutions and product to the customer. It's impossible to make any sense of such illogical company decisions. If the company is willing to give productive staff the boot (and I'm one of many good staff members affected) then you NEED to get out, not fight to stay in the hope it'll get better. It never does.
