How does engaging in a powerful therapeutic relationship make all the difference in facilitating your metamorphic process for self-awareness and growth?
Alexis Powell-Howard talks about modern living priorities. Mental and emotional health and well-being are more essential than ever before to enable growth and development. However, engaging in effective personal awareness and development can be hard, especially when trying to undertake the process alone or without professional help and support. Alexis Powell-Howard is the Managing Director at Fortis Therapy & Training, the Mental Health Consultancy of the Year 2022 and a multi-award-winning therapeutic and emotional wellbeing service working to deliver the gold standard in the mental health services sector. An experienced leader and manager, a BACP accredited and experienced psychotherapist, systemic practitioner, supervisor, trainer, mediator, and coach, passionate about therapeutic approaches and how effective they can be to help individuals, organizations and schools to move through difficult times. Alexis is also a TEDx and professional speaker, award-winner, regular on BBC Radio, and a contributing expert and host of live webinars, seminars, conferences, and hosts the Keeping the Peace podcast for Oscar Kilo, the National Police Wellbeing Service in the UK. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Key insights of this video: 1. Mental health care should be seen as an investment in yourself, and is now more important than ever. 2. Therapy has moved away from traditional models (e.g. sitting on the couch with no eye contact) to a person-centered approach. 3. Creative expression can be used to express the unexpressed, often associated with feelings of shame. 4. A Therapist's role is to actively listen and build a rapport with the client. 5. Learning to set boundaries and take responsibility for oneself is essential for good mental health. 6. Courage is needed to dig deep and explore difficult topics. 7. The work done in therapy should ultimately lead to the client being able to "fly solo" without needing to rely on the therapist's help. 8. Social media can lead us to look for external gurus to help us, when in fact, nobody knows us better than ourselves. 9. It is important to think about yourself and prioritize yourself on your list. 10. Opting into a therapeutic relationship can be life-changing and beneficial to both the individual and those around them.

most people that I know that need therapy must first admit they have a problem but they will never admit that because that would mean that they have been wrong for most of their life.

If anyone has any input on this, I'm all ears. I started therapy to do just that: invest in myself and make sure I am supported, mostly regarding my job (teaching). I do it to maintain my mental health. But according to many talks I've heard, therapy should lead to the client being able to "fly solo", which is something I'm absolutely capable of. I use therapy to discuss minor problems in my life, or to bounce perspectives off with someone on certain situations. So now I am kind of confused. Should I stop therapy because I don't have a specific goal with it?
@bishbash24
@bishbash24 Жыл бұрын
I was looking for this lol And does your therapist suggest you should stop? What's the minimal amount of time you need in order for you stop therapy? 3, 6, or 12 months?

Really great question. As a therapist myself, and a person who has been to personal therapy I can confirm that therapy is for everyone, at all levels of mental wellbeing, including as a way to sustain your mental health and not only if you have specific goals or if you are unable to manage by yourself. Good for you! Examples of therapy in talks you are referring to probably are using more extreme cases as evidence to make a clearer point. The decision to end therapy entirely up to you and your therapist to discuss and agree on, however you can choose to leave early , if you have brought specific goals you want to meet and have met them, or if you feel like you and your therapist aren't quite suited, or stay longer because it's helping you. It is very normal, and considered healthy to be in and out of therapy to support you throughout your life.

@@bishbash24 In my experience, 6 sessions is the minimum amount it takes for you to build a trusting and secure enough relationship with your therapist, to then have the courage to start delving deeper and achieving positive healing and development. 12 sessions in the UK seems to be the most recommended for therapy although I have been in therapy myself for 2 years and always had something that I needed to bring or think about. Some sessions were about celebrating positive changes and my growth! So basically, it can be as long as you need depending on what you want to achieve. If you just need a non-judgemental space to talk or process things happening in your life with someone, then you could access therapy for that during your whole lifetime if it helps you.

How or what if then the patient hv "Special Feeling" to his/her Therapist? Is it "Health" for the patient? If it is Not health, Then, is it better for the patient looking for another Therapist? Although perhaps that patient already feel "Matching" with that his/her Therapist, mean that patient must begin to adaptating again when must changing with another Therapist?

You have rights: you are the THE CLIENT of your psychologist/psychotherapist. And they can't disclosure whats going on inside unless you consent. However you have to be direct with them to reach an arrangement: they have to say something to your mom. I'm a psychologist and i NEVER disclosure any information that my Client gives, but i always ask: what can i tell... That said, when moms take their children to therapy, they should also go through therapy actually!! Because life is hard on everyone. Oh, one more thing: you have to have empathy with your therapist, or it will be a difficult and hard ride, and like the speaker of this video said: it can be very disruptive. But if you two click: magic can happen ;) He/she can help you with your boundaries, with your mental resources, etc. etc. Hope that this helps.

Oh, baby, how wrong you are. Anxiety is one of the ways your body communicates with your brain. In fact, it's how your gut microbiome send signals to your brain via vagus nerve. That's why good nutrition solves many psychological problems. Listen to your anxiety, it's telling you something.

What to expect? 1. To have to bank account emptied. 2. To be asked over and over about your childhood and 3. To be asked over and over again, 'How do you feel about that?'. Pseudo science that often does far more harm than good. If I want to invest in myself I will head off into the bush for a couple of weeks and just relax. Therapy is simply a big con.
