We live in a world of vast inequality, and Dr. Mesmin Destin shares a new angle on this reality to help us see how the forces that perpetuate these inequalities play out in our own life stories. His work shows the small and large ways that our everyday interactions and experiences push us on to different life paths and perhaps most importantly, what we can do about it. This talk draws from powerful experiments to capture the specific messages and moments that can inspire people to see and reach towards who they might become.
Mesmin Destin is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University in addition to a fellow of Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research. In collaboration with his lab group, Dr. Destin uses experiments and other methods to investigate factors shaping the experiences and outcomes of students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. His work carries implications for institutions and the development of learning environments that recognize and leverage student strengths and identities in ways that support motivation, achievement, and well-being. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I don't think most of us, like you, really take it in when someone's words are an arrow to the heart. I look back and now recognize when I voiced hope and was shot down. We need to instill confidence in our children to stand strong against it.

You have to rethink your position in the Comm model, the Sender of a message is not as important as the Receiver, who could completely be devastated when what you think is just casual is actually quite distressing to them. Learn empathy and practice it daily.

What a wonderful speech that was ❣️The influence during childhood is something you can’t choose. You are depending on parents/family and teachers. That often has such a bad impact on a child that it’s really hard to develop a different identity for his further future. So parents/family and teachers should really be cautious with children and young adults and support them in their development.

Just by being around them we can do that, you CAN change people; but you can't DIRECT that change or control it much. This is just another misconception and fallacy, since our very presence changes those around us every day! Embrace that change, and think of the possible consequences of any Communication you have with others along with experiences. A harsh word or a loving one can change a person's day just like that. So, DO IT.

This man is right. However, I represent this population that if told I can not do it and put limitations on my goals, my drive to succeed and prove them wrong helps me to achieve my goals. And yes, I have been put down in past ny people closest to me as a child but my wanting to reach my goals overruled their toxic influence. I have to admit that their poisoning did live scars, but they definitely did not stop me from succeeding. I had zero support and nobody told me how to follow my dreams. This is something I had and have in me GOD THANK you for this. Also i do believe all people that are putting limitations on others do that because they feel unsuccessful. Happy person will never mak3 another being unhappy. I wish all luck to everyone in New Year 2023 ❤🥂❤

Today is a new year in the history of nature and human civilization 🌏 🎬 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 . I dream this year that the following will happen: May peace prevail in this amazing world - To end the culture of spreading discord among the peoples of the world 🌏 - To transfer the costs of travel to a space similar to the cost of a tourist trip between America and Russia. 🇺🇸 🤍 🇷🇺 To respect religions in social media Love inhabits our planet 🌏 💗 🌏 - And I dream of thinking that I can visit all the countries of the world, one country, one country, to learn about the culture of its peoples and their living with them for days 🤭😂. What do you dream about in this new year, write here!!👇🌹

FYI Professional etiquette: Socially as well as professionally, medical doctors, dentists, and other professionals are addressed by, and introduced with, their titles. People who have earned a Ph. D. or any other academic, nonmedical doctoral degree have the choice of whether to use "Dr." both professionally and socially. Cool stuff right?

Reminds me of a Terrance Howard part of the movie Hustle and Flow "You know that little girl Keisha right? Well one day she's gonna come to me and ask me if she can be president, I know she's got a hoe for a mama and a trick for a daddy but I'm gonna say yes. I'm gonna lie, cause sometimes that's what you gotta do."
