From a street child to a
Ph.D. is a presentation that highlights Jose Luis Zelaya's life-story of growing up in San Pedro
Sula, Honduras to a finishing a Ph.D. in Urban Education in College Station, Texas. In it, he
describes growing up in absolute poverty, rampant violence and how hurricane Mitch (1998)
separated his family. He details taking a journey as an unaccompanied minor to the United
States to reunify with his mother and sister in the United States which lasted 45 arduous days. Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya completed his Ph.D. in Urban Education at Texas A&M University. He is also a first-generation college student who in the year 2006 became the first one in his family to graduate from high school.
Jose Luis will share his story of perseverance: “From a street-child to a Ph.D.” He describes experiences that shaped his upbringing, mentality, and character. From homelessness in one of the most dangerous cities of the world to migrating to the United States as an unaccompanied minor, he speaks of higher education as hope for our families and power to our communities. Jose Luis contributes his academic achievements to the great sacrifices of his family, numerous systems of support, mentors, and a strong personal desire to succeed.
Today, Jose Luis aspires to open his heart, mind, and soul to have an interactive conversation about the transformational power of higher education; life success; and creating a generational legacy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"I am not an example, I am a sample of the potential and capacity found in our community. Education is power." You have such an inspiring story Dr. Zelaya. I am happy to see that the hate and demonization of Latinos in this country has not stopped you! It is amazing to know you have not forgotten where you came from, even more you are helping people understand the terror that latinos are facing. Seguimos Pa'lante!
