Just amaaaazing. I discovered her after watching the film August Rush. I thought the soundtrack was Michael Hedges inspired and had to find out who the guitar player was. So glad I found her. But I was upset after finding out she was playing in South Africa, where I am, a month before I discovered her. Hope she performs Here again. Saw an awesome KZbin video of her performing with our local muso, Guy Buttery.

Wow! I love her sound! I experiment with different tunings myself because it does add a special element to a standard 6 string guitar sound (because of octaves) but she has invented a sound and technique that seems to connect with the resonant aether of the universe. The song at 15:12 is amazing. Forget the Calgon! Wear headphones, turn down the lights, light a scented candle and slip into a hot bubble bath while her music carries you to a distant happy place. Pure bliss.

Beautiful music. I love your energy and openness to share this with the world as you do. It's a beautiful and vulnerable place to be. And is an inspiration for all of us- (for me anyway!!!) Also, thank you Kaki for acknowledging the problem of carbon footprint. That helps all of us think about it, and wrestle with what we need to do ourselves. We can't wait for the government (especially now!)

Just a reminder, it is perfectly acceptable to say something is not your cup of tea. It is another thing entirely to try to justify your dislike of an artist's style by saying they have "no talent". That's just asinine. Also, every one of the borderline idiots here saying "It's just chords" and "She has bad/no technique", pay attention to the song from 3:50 to 7:00, which is called "Streetlight in the Egg", for reference. She is playing individual strings for the majority of the song, using proper fret fingering, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and plucking, all while using the palm of her right hand as a sort of bass drum on the body of the guitar throughout the entire song. I fucking DARE you to give that a shot, it's one of the most difficult techniques to master, and it's one that SHE FUCKING INVENTED! She's an innovator of new guitar techniques and styles, that's why she's playing at a TED conference (for the second time, by the way). It's really embarrassing to read so many comments from so many ignorant and arrogant faux musicians.

She's regarded as one of the top ten female guitarists ever, eighth on the list between Joni Mitchell (seventh), and Mother Maybelle Carter (ninth), according to a youtube video called Top Ten Female Guitarists. The list is subjective, but it brought me here to listen to her splendid sounds.
@cynsini92113 жыл бұрын
@@brianripley3924 I saw that list too, and there should never be a "female" caveat on there. That list was a bunch of greats, but Kaki is new and young enough I hadn't come across her yet, so I'm at least glad of it for that.

I don't know where all the vitriolic critique in the commentary is coming from here... I'm impressed by her performance on many levels (perhaps her oratory enunciation is not among them) but her musicality is beyond reproach... her compositions are subtle and complex, non-obvious & sophisticated, nuanced, redolent arrangements. They push and tumble and skitter with a brooding vitality that I somehow suspect is drawn from the same deep tenebrous well as her wryly understated sense of humor. Plus she has a waaaay cooler name than any y'all. So suck it till dawn you whinging, pusillanimous haters.

ffs - beauty is in the ear of the beholder. What the hell is everyone getting so worked up about hating on this woman? Either like it or not, but if you don't then no need to tell people that do like her that they're 'wrong' or 'idiots' or whatever. If you think (for instance - though its just an example that no one uses) "oooh you should instead listen to Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists, perhaps Asturias" then just say "hey, if you like this then you may like Robert Fripp who I think is 'better'". Maybe you'll enrich someone's life. But hating on this person enriches no one.

She is a very talented young artist. The sound tech mixing this is a typical New Joisey tone deaf putz. Absolutely NO ambiance on the mix or stage to make a player (especially a soloist) comfortable. 95% of the NJ knob twisters shouldn't be allowed to work a Bar Mitzvah for free much less a concert. Their concept of sound is too loud and louder. Check Kaki's live vid of her playing "Goby" to see what a pro mixes like. There should be licenses for audio engineers.
@TheNinetySecond10 жыл бұрын
I came here from the Goby video, and I immediately realised that the sound would be absolut shit. On the other hand, Untidy Desk is pretty hard to top with regards to live sound. Their recording of Lianne La Havas is the best session video I've ever seen, and I watch a lot of those.

+Gayle Andersen The sound engineer operating the sound board, live mixes a performance. Adjusting volume levels, setting EQ, mic gain, sometimes interactively adjusting and cutting sources, that are then sent to the musician's personal monitors. The entire process, mentioned prior is then reengineering and mixed again, differently for the PA system that the audience listens to.

Wait... shes using a Vo-96 on a Classical guitar?!?! So that means it does indeed work on Nylon strings, right?! That's awesome!!! Those definitely sound like nylon strings, so unless they have a metal core or wrapping or something I have no idea how that device works in terms of using magnets to vibrate the strings. I guess I'll just take it as it is... TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
@Manuelomar20019 жыл бұрын
That's an Ovation guitar, not a classical. She has always played steel-string guitars.
@RimmyTimfpv9 жыл бұрын
Look at the second guitar she plays... Definitely set up like a classical guitar with nylon strings. Steel string guitars dont have headstocks like that guitar with natural finish and with the fancy resonating technology thing... I know what a steel stringed ovation looks like, but the second guitar she plays, at 10:00 lookss and sounds like a classical guitar.
@Manuelomar20019 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't. Classical guitars are smaller. That huge dreadnought-body style is only found on modern guitars. Also, she said that the device on the guitar uses *magnetic fields* to change the way the strings vibrate. Magnetic fields means steel strings. Nylon is not magnetic. It has a headstock and tuners in that older style like classical guitars do, but that's it.
