There is so much to learn from her pauses, her timing. She's able to be at peace with silence. It also helps her communicate much better to slow down. It's like she is in touch with a natural energy flow so many of us are disconnected from. This is beautiful.

I learned the importance of slowing down from a friend & classmate. The professors would ask questions & most of would blurt out the answer (wrong or right). When he was directly asked, he would take his time before he answered. You could tell everyone else was uncomfortable with the silence, but then he would share his thought through answer. I used this technique and my answers were so much more clear, and I learned a lot.

@@malikfahdaliawan178 the production of hormones are controlled subconsciously by our mind, meaning the thoughts that we are conditioned with are the subconscious part of our mind and its flow controls the production of hormones or any other subconscious activity. I have an awakening when she said “stop blaming others for your unhappiness”. She is right. If we are happy inside, no matter the outside world how bad it is, we will still have a peaceful mind. On the other hand, if we have a war inside, no matter how many beautiful people we meet in our life, how lovely our surrounding is, we will not notice the good.

1. Need to stop outsourcing our happiness. 2. Actively cultivate a source of peace and happiness from inside. 3. Happiness and unhappiness are both states of mind, therefore, their real cause can't be found outside the mind. It is not what happens to us but how we react to it that creates happiness and unhappiness.

But that (to me) has always been obvious. This is so very easy to say when it is an example of working with a coworker you don't like! But what about real tragedies? What about a lifetime of abuse and trauma? What about subconscious (or even unconscious) reactions because of childhood trauma? Is happiness really a choice? You can go inside and find calm and love but then you still have to live in this world and sadly, truly bad things happen to very good people. What do you do then? Keep closing your eyes, breathing and finding your inner calm? You can't do that all the time. You still have to live in this world.

That quote is completely wrong in my opinion. During meditation you look into the deepest corners of your mind without judgment(not easy to do) and you discover the things that are weighing you down from enlightenment. Then when you come out of deep meditation you gain new perspectives which can be used to get rid of these negative things. This is a continuous process of growth and in no way will happen in a short time. So my friend, that quote is completely off topic here.
@j.b.vanmourik2624
@j.b.vanmourik2624 8 жыл бұрын
Sounds nice, but finding something or nothing is NOT a doing. What ignites that IS, but it already needs an extraordinairy level of being. So I see this phrase as subtly insincere to the student. Mr. Tilopa worked with haiku-kind of teachings .. It has dubious sides to me as it can be used to overpower students with a conscious intention to frustrate. Even Tolle these days shows subtle signs of it. The time is near that we are given keys to deeper knowing on an even democratic level, which would indicate the end of psychiatry as well as the end of the 'esoteric elite' ....
@Power50505
@Power50505 8 жыл бұрын
I see your point and it makes sense. Also, the best psychiatrist is your own mind exploring itself and understanding what lies deep within your conscious. It must be done through meditation and I suggest an isolation tank as the senses can distract a person during this reflection period. The esoteric elite( the ruling class) have always known about this power for many years that is why our lives are full of distractions and our illnesses only treated by numbing through medication rather than enlightenment.

It brought tears to my eyes when the first question is asked. Am i happy? Then suddenly, all of my walls crumbled and fell apart. I tried so much to hide my insecurities, and filled my head with positive thinking, to the point that the negatives and problems are just pushed down, not solved. I thought that was a righteous move, to be happy. But then seeing her so calm, i crushed. Observing her peacefulness, i cried and answered : no, i'm not happy, even why i tried so hard to be positive. In that very moment, i realized what i am missing, is peace. If inside of you are having a war, then no positive thoughts can last. I lacked peace. That's why i am so easy to be looked through just by one simple question : are you happy? Thank Gen Kelsang Nyema, for what you have taught me today, that the ultimate and greatest happiness, and the one truly stable happiness, is inner peace. I wish you peace and success.

I can safely say that by now, your inner peace have failed you multiple times right ? If her teachigs are right, then how is possible ? Its simple. Its a lie, what goes around you does affect you, like it supose to do. You want to be happy, like me, like all of us. She says "inner peace", i say "Jesus Christ". What do you say, both seems to be source of happiness. Which one will last on the long run ? When Jesus sacrificied his life for our sins, he didn't care if we where belivers or not, he did it for all of us, so that includes also his torturers. For you, for me, thats a lot of love. Can you love the people who trully want you dead ? And by love, i mean giving even your life for them ? Well, here is your answer. Strive for this kind of love, and your happines, will not be from this world. And on the road you will find out where this "inner peace" have its place on a true happines scaleing path. God bless you !!!

Then make them. She just proved we chose our mental state. Stop waiting for more and be the more yourself. If everyone sincerely focused on mending themselves instead of waving the virtue signal we would be golden. Did anyone actually take this to heart, or did we all just get the customary case of the feels before moving onto the next irrelevancy in our 24 hour distraction cycle?

Happiness and joy are not fleeting..... They are consistent and neverchanging... They can be our normal default state.... But what we r doing is... We are confusing happiness with pleasures... Which depends on the stimulation of our senses.... Which definitely is fleeting.... Because for e. G we feel the best when we bite into a steak or listen to a song b ecause it stimulates our tongue or hearing.... But that rush or feeling disappears after a few bites and we certainly get bored of listening to the same tune..... We need something else.... This limited nature of sensual pleasures makes us feel that it is fleeting.... So pleasure and happiness are different.... Dont overglamorise peace because that is the most basic criteria to njoe anything just a have a meal.... We cry so much about peace because may somewhere during the journey we lost that also.... With enuf practice and dedication we can be ecastatic at every instant....

I think you're speaking about non-duality which may not be suitable for a general audience. We can simply say that peace of mind brings forth causes for happiness to arise. Non-duality can be introduced later. It would be like giving a child an injection and saying this will hurt rather than giving them a teddy bear to focus on.

I disagree. There comes a moment where peacefulness actually ends up leading to happiness. As the moment you stop attributing labels to negative thoughts, emotions and so forth; you end up experiencing life in its entirety through this newly found pair of lens; which is the lens of acceptance and that ultimately leads to a state of blissfulness.

I dont know who you are, but happines is not a state of mind dont be deceived. It is a reaction, an effect. The moment you stop believing this, is the moment you become delusional, and create your own reality, and i can assure you, you will fail, you will end unhappy. Maybe if i pronnounce the word "God" or even further "Jesus", you will say " i knew it, that only a christian will disagree with her teachings". But i will be cruel and ask you to try it out. Waste your time with this kind of beliefs, but when you will discover the terifying truth behind it my friend, you will need a good pair of shoes, and bravely pray to the very Jesus for speed, couse you will need to run very fast from it. Call your christian brother "a prophet" when this happens, becouse i warned you long before.

Many years ago I ended up losing my job and had to walk 1/2 a mile to catch my bus which as i was walking I was giggling and laughing and smiling while everyone else I was coming into contact with (who had yet to be to their offices) were negative and frowning... I was laid off due to the recession and also my company and department starting to restructure. I try to watch this video every few days now to help remind me of the profoundly simple things she says, which I totally agree with while watching, but sometimes forget to consider in my day to day life. So like when she says that it's not external things that determine our happiness or unhappiness, but rather how we interpret or respond to those things... I think about how when I see birds, it makes me happy. When I see a bumble bee at one of my garden flowers, I get all excited. However I know that for many other people, these things bring them no happiness at all. Some people don't notice birds at all or consider them 'nuisances'. Some see bumble bees and can only think of potentially being stung and wanting to kill the bees.Conversely, some people may feel sad if they lose their job. Other people might lose their job, and see it as an 'opportunity' for change. Some Americans may feel 'irritation' if a tourist approaches them in their town, and tries to ask for help with directions, but can't really speak English very well. For other Americans, they may find this 'exciting'...an opportunity to try and help someone...maybe even to use some of their foreign language skills.So indeed, so much about our 'mood' is perspective. Of course, I am talking about your average day to day occurrences in life. It's a very different thing to say it's all about 'perspective', when one is very ill, or a family member dies etc. But yet even then, perspective can be a 'factor', insofar as in some cultures, the death of a family member is seen as automatically 'traumatic' and life-altering and a guarantee of ensuing depression, for the family members that remain. Whereas in other cultures, death is seen as a bittersweet yet beautifully poignant transition...a part of the cycle of life....

Thanks to buddhism and wisdoms, I have learned so much. Attatchment of the external leads to suffering. We get angry at things we cannot change and that is that things change all the time. Nothing stays the same. Our age, our happiness, our sadness, wealth, health and our breath. We breathe in so that it comes out. Only thing that doesn’t change is the state of death, where you cease to breathe and exist. At the same time don’t let that fear rule over you. Everything ends so that things begins, hence the change. My personal most important question in life is: If I somehow or for some reason, were to die tomorrow, will I die happy? With that question I can push myself to the urge of living life for what it is and that is the beauty of life and it is limitless. I at this point have not live life to the fullest yet so I am still in this journey thinking about my own question everyday and every moment

I think an important point has been missed here though, I know she didn't exactly bring it up, but she has done so by example. By taking the time to practise this state of mind is what makes it easier to achieve it. Practise makes perfect after all. Part of the point she's trying to make is that people are too 'busy' blaming their state of mind on others, instead of using that time to practise, which is exactly what's happened here when you accuse her of being in an environment more suited to achieving such a state of mind. I hope this is helpful in understanding what she is trying to do.
@whittark111
@whittark111 8 жыл бұрын
I understand what she's trying to do and am glad that she's doing it. I'm not blaming anyone. I'll put it another way. Put two people in contained environments. One environment is quiet while the other is a loud, continual barrage against the senses. Now tell both subjects that the goal is to achieve Zen calm. One will have an easier time of it. Of course. Can happiness be achieved by constantly training the mind regardless of one's environment? Yes. Not impossible but in some cases more challenging than in others. It's an observation.
@timmcc6899
@timmcc6899 8 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. The person in the quiet environment doesn't have the outside influences necessary to learn what a Zen state is. I understand what you mean though, with the amount of information being bombarded upon the other person, and how they may be unable to filter out the unnecessary 'noise'. Either person is going to need those outside influences so that they may understand what that Zen state is. Its about developing the mental filters necessary to achieve such a state, which comes from practise, which makes the issue personal, not environmental.We've seen plenty of examples in the past where people have achieved things contrary to stereotypes and social norms, and whilst it may be a greater challenge, that its achievable is proof in itself. Its the act of questioning that can prevent the achievement, because there's no acting upon the achievement itself, which once its achieved, the challenge is overcome. Which again is a personal idea, not environmental. Don't fear the challenge. Fear instead, not accepting the challenge, because you will have gained nothing by standing idly by in 'observation' of what others achieved by accepting that challenge themselves.

I thought she did a wonderful job of introducing a subject that one would need to delve into deeper, in terms of personal awareness and practice. I found some of the negative comments on her talk reflect some misconception of the underlying ideas behind the talk. I would encourage the authors of those comments to accept her talk as a challenge: try to learn more about looking inward, meditation. This is something that takes some time and personal experience to see for oneself. The ideas can be understood quickly, but the mind may require time and practice to really know them. Best wishes.

The qualified speaker is very clear & focused on getting her message to her audience, including those of us at home. There is no use in letting cynism and suspicions cloud our listening, other than to lose an open heart & thus losing the ability to garner what is of true value here. jc

Her first question came in; it triggered.. The second one came gradually; I bursted into tears and my head is screaming I'm so glad I came across this video. Her way of talking makes my head pause and walk slower. It's been tiring the past few weeks and I wasn't okay. Her wisdom helped me to pause and mind inner peace that I wasn't having recently.

She talks slowly, allowing her audience to take in everything she is saying. Her voice is also a very relaxing non stressful pitch. Very true that happiness is a state of mind.

so simple yet so powerful. we don't realize it but most problems in life can be solved by finding inner peace, breathing out all the toxic thoughts and actions and inhaling all the joyful and benevolent thoughts of goodness.

Very smart. Only one point, though: Ok that the state of mind should not be found outside the mind, but the mind is not a self-sufficient organism, it is also in relation to the world. So perhaps there is some middle ground: a mind that can FILTER what comes from outside. But I'm not sure that a mind completely independent from people and circumstances is possible or even desirable. In a sense, the highs and lows of life make us human. I'm not even sure that I desire a state of continuous stable happiness. Fluctuations, moments of hardship and struggle, make moments of happiness all the more meaningful. In music there is tension and release. The idea that I want to be equally happy every single day I don't find attractive, it sounds dangerously close to a vanilla-like existence.

I agree yet barely anyone mentions these points at all in this comment section. For me this is where Buddhism and psychology detach from each other because what she says is basically “you don’t need anything in life to make you happy” but we know that as social beings it’s important to build close friendships, relationships, find purpose and fulfilment. All those things rely on something outside of us. If we don’t allow the outside world to influence our happiness then crime wouldn’t be bad. For example: someone punches your partner, that event is happening outside of you. You seen it happen. Now if we lived in a world where your outer experiences didn’t influence your happiness then in this situation you wouldn’t be upset that someone punched your partner. But in reality like any human being watching their partner get hit they would be angry and upset and that would be an instant natural reaction it wouldn’t be a reaction you could control. Another example is someone getting bullied. A kid gets bullied everyday at school and dreads going to school and is upset that he’s getting bullied. Now would it be right to say to the kid hey kid the best way to be happy is to not blame the bullies because your unhappiness isn’t their fault but your own state of mind.
