Peter L. Benson, president and CEO of Minneapolis-based Search Institute, is one of the world's leading authorities on positive human development. Dr. Benson is the author or editor of more than a dozen books on child and adolescent development and social change, including, most recently, Sparks: How Parents Can Help Ignite the Hidden Strengths of Teenagers Dr. Benson's international reputation in human development emerged in the 1990s through his innovative, research-based framework of Developmental Assets, the most widely recognized approach to positive youth development in the United States and, increasingly, around the world. Before joining Search Institute in 1978, Dr. Benson was chair of the psychology department and chair of the program in human development and social relations at Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana.

I like how the main idea of this video is adults setting expectations for children, but they never let children show us their potential. My favorite quote from this video was that children are not empty vessels, but the fire can be started within.

I've watched this over and over. In part because of the topic. Sparks is a great way to engage. I ALSO watch it b/c he is such a phenomenal speaker, varying his pace, his voice, pauses, etc.

If kids who care about social justice and taking care of the world were nurtured and encouraged from the first moments of passion, this would transform the world.

Thank you for sharing your spark with us. This is a huge call to action and I hope all parents, teachers and leaders talk to their children about their sparks. I cant help wondering how different life could be if someone had nurtured my spark. Thankfully it's still with me. Keep up the great work!!!

To dream what is possible and to put oneself in service of that dream is the formula for a life well lived." -Peter Lorimer Benson (May 2, 1946 - October 2, 2011) --- Sadly this wonderful man passed away.

A most inspiring and useful talk. At our school we are working on improving student engagement and giving students a sense of purpose. "You shall know them by their sparks!" Thanks you Peter Benson.

Man, I read you! I'm now in the final third of my life, and I realize I often lament the lost opportunities in my life, opportunities that will never come again. I sometimes say:"I could have been" ...., but thinking about it just gets me down more. And I start feeling bitter and cynical ..., and this simply makes me feel more defeated. We need someone to give a talk on how to rekindle the 'de-sparked'.

Wow. I was skeptical of this video I'm obliged to watch for a class, it's jaw-dropping that the Arts are the most engaging and where kids feel their best, yet it's the most underfunded. Sad.

2011.... That's sad, right here is the answer to fixing American schools and five years has passed, and it's not being done. It's like giving a man dying of death a table of food, and leave. When you come back, he is dead, and the food is spoiled. Thats how You the teacher, the parent, the leader have let the spark of the children die, you've allowed it to rot, and in doing taken from humanity a piece of its triumph. You've stolen them from man kind.

I mean arts, dancing, poetry or singing ain't going to pay the bills, you gotta be realistic. You get lucky if you succeed in any of these arts, but what's the chance?.. leave that as a hobby or side job.
@j.murphy7678
@j.murphy7678 6 жыл бұрын
Kurt Vonnegut said it best: The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something." And: As the job market gets worse, the creativity that making art strengthens in students can be the MOST useful skill set in creating a product or a business of their own that will sustain them, in part or in whole.
