I couldn't imagine treating anyone this way, especially a family member. It's just so incredibly cruel. The fact that they committed this act so slowly and knowingly forced his pain to linger over such a long period of time is just awful. I think the judge failed to realize that Paul was undergoing extreme emotional abuse by his mother called emotional incest. The levels of enmeshment he was dealing with, being his mom's supporter/therapist/jailer, etc. and her isolating him from his father by sharing their marital business with him (most of which COULD BE MADE UP BY HER)--- of course, he lives at home so he needs it to be a safe space and he wants parental love and to not be abandoned. The best ways to get that and maintain his worldview of parental love is to obey his mother and be there for her despite her seeking comfort from him in abnormal ways and encouraging him to be an abuser to his younger brother. I'm sure he thought many times about standing up for his brother, but what would it mean for how he would now be treated? It's a dilemma. I'm sure he questioned if what his mom said was true, but then facing the agony that you abandoned your father figure on your own (so now you're alone) and that the person you trust the most is a liar is too much to handle. Paul also comes across as mentally much younger than he should be, almost socially inept, and is far too skinny for his age which are also signs of a potentially abused kid. I do think he deserved jail time but i think 30->life ignores the obvious signs he is a victim as well.

Because people don't speak up or act. It's not the system, it's literally people. Everyone. The teachers said multiple times they knew his life was hell and he was abused and not fed at home.. but they never reported it. Kids like this (including me) are failed by literally everyone who is either too lazy or too afraid to speak up or enquire when they see something not right. Don't blame the system, just look in the mirror.

@@ORANDOMM I have looked in the mirror. I took in 2 boys who were terribly abused and helped raise them. I was abandoned several times by my mother when I was a child, not to mention the extreme physical abuse. It sounds to me like you have experienced the same. If you have, I am sorry that happened to you. We need to all come together, regardless of our past, and try to put an end to this. Furthermore, escaping from reality through the use of drugs and alcohol does not work. Keep that in mind. Take care. Good luck.

because if you make government responsible for stepping in, when it happens people say "muh freedums" and resist or shut that down. The truth is you like keeping the problem as long as it isn't YOUR responsibility. "Why hasn't the government figured it out????" yet every time a law pushes for it, it's considered a violation of rights. wamp wamp. this just leads people to care about themselves, ie, glad my family isn't like this: sucks to suck

@frottery Every child who is born should be in a system that requires an annual report to be filed by a doctor indicating the state of the child's health. Without this stop gap measure, children will continue to unnecessarily suffer from malnutrition and abuse.

I hear what you’re saying but let’s pray that the brother takes accountability and can change. You are a product of your environment to some degree and he was raised by pure evil.

i have been watching true crime vids/shows for 15 years and this particular case makes me cry. this is the worst kind of torture i have ever seen done on a beautiful innocent child. i’m so sorry for him. if it was up to me, his mother and brother would only have the same exact punishments until their last days. prison is too good for them.

I followed this case from the time it occurred. It’s one of the absolute worst. This woman tortured her disabled child and manipulated her other son to do the most horrific things. What made me FURIOUS was at the time it went to court after a couple days she wasn’t capable to be in court. She cared so much about what other people thought she didn’t want to face people. She didn’t even have to stand in front of the judge in court during her sentencing. She should have been forced to be there in person. Sickening. How could she get away from facing court. Imagine how terrified her son was in that closet. Why couldn’t she be made to be so much as uncomfortable. REST in PEACE SWEET TIMOTHY.
