When Maynard is describing what this dude is wearing e.g "Vans, 501's and a dope Beastie T..." and what he's drinking, a Coke, it's the irony and hypocrisy. This guy is telling TOOL they've sold out when he's sitting there wearing the trendiest clothing labels and drinking the most popular drink of the day. Love these reaction vids guys.

Oh... and I don't think Maynard is the one sipping Coke... I think the line is specifically saying that 'ol OGT over there was talking to MJK, "and in between sips of Coke" said all that stuff about selling out, to kind of point out how he himself is consuming this brand... in fact the whole first verses are all talking about how this cat is basically covered in brands (Vans shoes... 501s Levi's Jeans... Beastie Tee Beastie Boys T-Shirt... all brands, the Coke is just an extension of that), and himself uses these distinguishing features (tatts, nipple rings) to in a way, "Brand" himself... to make himself unique. Nowadays, using yourSELF as a brand, calling yourself a "brand", etc, is a VERY common thing in the age of KZbinrs and Instagrammers... Its actually things that people who try to give advise on how to make it as a online personality, or social media person or whatever, through some online course or book or even just a web-page giving you tips on how to "make it" in that arena, one of their most basic advice will always be "Brand yourself." basically telling you to turn yourSELF and your personality into a marketable entity through things like using a specific handle instead of your name, a specific logo to represent yourself, even specific clothes or style or even a specific haircut or whatever to basically do to yourself what a marketing team, a graphic designer, and so on would do to a sellable product, just like Coke-a-Cola... (look at someone like JackSepticEye or PewDiePie... they do ALL of that stuff and more... they even have a catchphrase, with "top'o'da'mornin'to-ya" and "Peeeewdiepiiiiie" respectively... they are perfect examples of people who have successfully branded themselves. Anyway, the point is that the "between sips of Coke" is another part of, not just providing a detailed description of the guy, but also, building this guy's "Brand" up... to show that PEOPLE "sell out to the man" just as much as any musician might without even thinking of it... This is along the same lines as the whole "I'm the man and You're the man and He's the man as well!" part.

OGT is short for On Good Terms; I don’t know what it actually stands for but both seems to work in context.
@Matt-ob3it5 жыл бұрын
In this song it is supposed to mean "OG Tool," as in Original Gangsta, which is what "since '92" and the "first EP" are references to, as in the guy was a fan from Day Oneish.
@thefourshowflip5 жыл бұрын
Who knows; I will say I had always had the same suspicions regarding the meaning, but in the end, it’s just speculation. I just thought it was interesting that we get the essentially the same meaning with either OG Tool or On Good Terms (he was on good terms in the sense that he was claiming to be a fan/follower of the band since ‘92).

I know this'll be a weird comment, and a weird thought to have popped into my head while hearing your reaction in the first place... but because she's so young, and already knows what the slang term "trap" means... well... it kinda makes me wonder whether or not it has something to do with the whole climate of focus on LGBTQ rights that have been going down and such a big deal and focus in the news and the media across the country specifically trans rights (and especially in the south, which ya'll obviously are, judging by ya'll's accents (Texan myself.. ya'll actually sound like ya'll could be from Tejas too, corect me if im wrong)what with all the trans bathroom rights and all)since back when I was her age (just shooting out a guess here... 14? maybe 15? (the age of my first TOOL concert, btw! lol!)) and makes me wonder if that's a much more common slang used by kids now these days... because while I would have known that term back then, it was more because I was weird and knew about weird stuff (and trans people would have been considered weird stuff back then, nowhere near as accepted as it is today (I was born in 1986, so my highschool years was 2001-2004)) unlike the vast majority of my peers who almost definitely wouldn't have had a clue what the term "trap" was... I think there probably was only maybe 3 or 4 kids in my entire school of about 2000 kids... some not even being open about it, but just kind of in the early transition stages themselves throughout their high school career, and just not showing it as much as possible, and staying closeted as much as they could... even being openly gay was a pretty rare thing back then... It wasn't nearly as bad as the decades before, but nothing like it is today for sure... Now, while a good grip of decent people were there in that time that would be completely cool with their friend coming out, and would step in and defend a gay kid if they were being picked on... at the same time, "gay" in a derogatory way, as well as in a way to mean "lame" as in just saying "that thing is gay" or "you're being real gay"... and also "fag" or "faggot" being used very openly and commonly, and not just toward gay people, but just as a standard insult not really having to do with being gay at all, but just a standard insult like calling someone a "bitch" or a "dipshit"... I'm sure it still happens today, but I'd bet its much less widely used and acceptable. Then, it was standard to hear day in and day out, whereas I imagine these days, you'd easily hear someone calling you out for it, saying "that's not cool to say that" or whatnot these days... whereas back then, I honestly don't think I had EVER heard someone saying "gay", "fag" or "faggot" was offensive or unacceptable, or "not cool"... Not even the openly gay kids would stop and tell someone that they were being offensive or that they shouldn't be saying those words... unless perhaps it was ACTUALLY being used to harass and bully an actual gay person, and not just used as a sort of general insult to someone. (I'll even admit that while I have always been 100% accepting of gay people and have had many of gay friends over the years since high school, I'll still even today use "gay" to mean "lame"... although today it's pretty much always inadvertent because I try not to use gay that way anymore, but sometimes it slips out randomly... but back then it was a completely different kind of climate... we didn't have this whole culture of "being offended" like we do today. Hell... the term "SJW" wasn't even HEARD OF for a good decade after then... This is all mainly because we didn't have this whole culture of social media... Hell, the internet was a pretty new thing to a LOT of kids back then... Definitely nothing even close to social media... MySpace and KZbin both becoming a thing maybe a year or two after I graduated... The closest thing we had to social media was probably online forums (like I was part of both an online artist's forum and "TDN" or toolshed.down.net's Tool-based forum, or "Usenet" aka "alt.tool" style newsgroups or "BBS" bulletin boards or even instant messengers like ICQ and AIM which out of all of those, I think forums are the only one that's even used anymore, and even forums have pretty much been replaced by Reddit. We were just the first generation of kids to own cell phones in high school... it was the age of the old Nokia brick phones... the "Motorola Razor" flip phone just coming out I think in my senior year.) And I know it'll seem like I'm judging who she is as a person by saying this, which I'm totally not trying to do, she totally seems like a smart kid... but I imagine that she'd be included in that group that wouldn't have known what that meant. I'd totally be curious as to what her thoughts were on this and what her insight is about it. Does she think that most, or a lot, of kids these days know what that term means? And if the answer is yes, then if she thinks it actually is because the issue of trans rights and treating trans people with respect is such a big deal and such a common topic over the past decade. Lol... I know, I know... that was a weird comment. But if you actually read this comment, and if she actually answers, thanks ahead of time! :D And I'm not sure what age the dude is either, but I'd have to guess anything from the range of 19-22... but what is your experience yourself with what I've been mentioning? Thanks again, guys... LOL... I know this all sounds pretty foreign to you to imagine this kind of stuff... you both probably grew up with iPhones as the norm and don't remember a time before at LEAST MySpace... LOL!... Now that I typed it out and mentioned that stuff, it actually really did make me feel pretty old... LOL!!! hahahaha!!! I know this was a weird comment and topic to bring up in this thread... it was all just sparked by her saying, "That's a trap!" LOFNL!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aneXoq2Gl8h5n6M :D
